According to the increasing interests of healthcare and medical information services for healthy living, the multimedia authoring tools for healthcare and medical contents are strongly required. In this paper, a new multimedia authoring tool supporting user-friendly interfaces is implemented, which is based on SMIL (synchronized multimedia integration language) producing Web-based multimedia contents. The implemented authoring tool in this paper not only provides functionalities to play, verify and modify the partial contents immediately but also offers capabilities to insert multimedia objects into contents with ease. The multimedia contents containing disparate healthcare and medical information can be easily designed with this tool. The enhanced usability of this tool can contribute to the realization of diverse healthcare and medical information services.

Authentication is a primary component for secure delivery of multimedia content in many consumer networking applications: to guarantee the integrity of the received data stream. Meanwhile, consumer networks increasingly used for multimedia information and commercial content delivery, are destined to be heterogeneous. To provide QoS, it is necessary to adapt the multimedia stream to the heterogeneous network channel conditions and device capabilities. This new adaptation requirement, together with the 'best effort' and 'error prone' characteristics of IP and wireless networks, and the 'real time playback' property of streaming media impose challenges in the design of the streaming media authentication schemes. Conventional message authentication schemes do not offer suitable scalability or loss resilient capability for this new set of applications. A suitable authentication scheme must allow the recipient to authenticate the received data faster than the packet receiving rate, with means to adapt to channel conditions and device capability, despite any losses or transmission errors. In this paper we study the design of loss resilient scalable media stream authentication and present a scheme that is scalable and loss resilient.

A new tunnel scheme for multimedia traversing NAT/Firewall in NGN (next generation network) is presented, which is improved on the basis of MASMCT (Multi-agent System for multimedia Communications Traversing NAT/Firewall). In this new scheme, we move the controlling agent into private network and incorporate the function of signaling agent in public network into the Softswitch, but we still keep the multiagent architecture. The design can not only speed up the call signaling process but also offer the controlling agent component with protection provided by the firewall. Finally, the performance evaluation of the system is also given based on SIP protocol and G.723.1 coding standard.

The present work practices a previously published layered middleware design architecture that can integrate a rich set of Java APIs into the OMG CORBA audio/video streaming framework. In this design, JMF, CORBA audio/video streaming service, CORBA, and JRE are functioned as a programming language domain-specific middleware, a common middleware service, a distribution middleware, and a host infrastructure middleware layers, respectively. The current work utilizes the OMG audio/video stream binding mechanism in order to provide a standardized interoperability of streams between CORBA and JMF environments. Through a generalized mapping, CORBA objects could directly manipulate JMF classes. Although the current high level layered design work is only applicable to OMG compliant Java ORBs, this design concept could be extended into other language specific ORBs by utilizing other programming language domain specific service layers, i.e., other programming language APIs.

multimedia objects are distributed in peer-to-peer (P2P) overlay networks since objects are cached, downloaded, and personalized in peer computers (peers). An application has to find target peers which can support enough quality of service of objects. We discuss a new type of flooding algorithm to find target peers based on charge and acquaintance concepts so that areas in networks where target peers are expected to exist are more deeply searched. In addition, we discuss how peers can be granted access rights to manipulate the objects with help and cooperation of acquaintances. We evaluate the charge-based flooding algorithm compared with a TTL-based flooding algorithm in terms of the number of messages transmitted in networks.

In order to provide seamless multimedia services in the next-generation wireless networks, efficient bandwidth reservation scheme must be developed. A novel attribute-based bandwidth reservation scheme is proposed in this paper as a solution to support quality-of-service guarantees (QoS) in the mobile multimedia wireless networks. Based on the existing network conditions, the proposed scheme makes an adaptive decision for bandwidth reservation and call admission in each base station (BS). We use the dynamically adaptive approaches to reduce the connection-blocking probability (CBP) and connection-dropping probability (CDP), and to increase the bandwidth utilization (BU) for mobile multimedia wireless networks. Simulation results show that our proposed scheme outperform the previously proposed scheme in terms of CBP, CDP, and BU in mobile communication systems.
