In this paper, we focus on deterministic quality of service (QoS) guarantees in terms of end-to-end response time and jitter that can be granted to multicast multimedia applications. These deterministic guarantees are based on a worst case analysis. With regard to the computation of the bound on the end-to-end response time, we first show that the trajectory approach dominates the holistic one, whatever the scheduling policy used in the node. We then design a solution based on this result for multicast multimedia applications subject to end-to-end deadline and jitter constraints. The solution we propose allows to achieve a fair delivery of the multimedia content to a group of clients. This solution is a basic block that can be used to design new interactive multimedia applications, such as live multicast, voting games and question/answer games. Because of the domination property, this solution allows to accept more flows meeting the requested QoS. Moreover, this solution can be easily implemented on existing routers

With the development of computer-based location tracking systems and sensor systems a large amount of contextual information is available to the application developer. Information such as the location and motion paths of users and physical objects, and the ambient noise and temperature of the surrounding environment can be used to tailor a users experience with an application, to best suit their requirements. This paper introduces a location-aware audio streaming application that utilizes a networked multimedia architecture. This architecture facilitates the advertisement, discovery and connectivity of audio services. The streaming application uses both the user's current location, and the location of surrounding active loudspeakers to determine the best output device to use.

Recent advances in the Internet enabling technologies and wide deployment of broadband optical and wireless networks in both the core and access areas have led to rapid growth of real-time multimedia communications and collaborative computing applications over the Internet anytime and anywhere. The mobile multimedia collaboration enabled applications include networked healthcare, distributed data right management for digital content distribution, telematics, and 3G/4G/wireline network convergence. These mobile multimedia collaborative networking and computing applications are recently made possible due to widely deployed broadband Internet (e.g. IP-over-SONET) and last-mile broadband technologies (e.g., ADSL/DSL and cable modem), the maturity of a widely accepted application layer signaling protocol (session initiation protocol (SIP)), and availability of high-power and smart mobile devices. These mobile multimedia collaboration enabled applications share a common core application requirement set, referred to as "5R" requirements, i.e., "right data sent to right person at right time in right form at right cost". This 5R requirement set basically covers technical challenges of security, QoS, privacy protection, performance, mobility and costs from layer 1 to layer 7. In this talk, we first discuss the concept of mobile multimedia collaboration and its enabled applications as described above. We then use distributed data right management (DRM) for secure digital content distribution as an example to illustrate 5R requirements. We conclude the talk by identifying challenges of meeting the 5R requirements as well as reviewing the progress of 5R implementation under mobile broadband Internet networking infrastructure.

Quality-of-service (QoS) is a desirable feature for mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) due to the growth of multimedia applications. However, the mobile nature and dynamic topology of MANETs make it difficult to provide QoS assurance in such networks. In this paper we propose a QoS routing protocol based on AODV (QS-AODV), which creates routes according to application QoS requirements. A local repair mechanism is used to improve the packet delivery ratio. It is shown that QS-AODV provides performance comparable to AODV under light traffic conditions. In heavy traffic, QS-AODV provides higher packet delivery ratios and lower routing overheads, at a cost of slightly longer end-to-end delays. The effects of mobility on performance is also presented.

This paper addresses the radio resource management (RRIM) structure and efficient dynamic capacity allocation techniques for hybrid TDMA/CDMA mobile cellular networks to support multimedia services with different quality-of-service (QoS) requirements in an interference-limited environment. Based on the received interference information, the minimum instantaneous power (MIP) algorithm aims to assign timeslot-codes that minimize the required transmitted power to maintain a target SINR. However, the MIP, being distributed, does not make any attempt to avoid generation of interference elsewhere across the network. Aiming to reduce both potentially received and generated interference in timeslot-code assignment, the proposed minimum sum of path-loss ratio (MS-PLR) algorithm incorporates the mutual large-scale path-loss ratios between different active mobiles in the cost function of a given timeslot during assignment. Simulation results for various traffic scenarios are used for performance evaluation and comparison. It is shown that MS-PLR can offer an additional capacity increase of 24% over MIP. The impacts of bursty WWW traffic on speech performance are also examined.

Object movie refers to a set of images captured from different perspectives around a 3D object. Object movie is a good representation of a physical object because it can provide 3D interactive viewing effect, but does not require 3D reconstruction. In order to retrieve the desired object movie from the database, we first map an object movie into a manifold in the feature space. Two different sets of feature descriptors, one dense and one condensed, are designed to sample the manifold. Based on these descriptors, we define the dissimilarity measure between the query and the target in the object movie data-base. The query we considered can be either a complete object movie or simply a subset of views. In this paper, we further propose a relevance feedback approach to improving retrieved results. Some experimental results are shown to show the potential of our approach. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

H.323 has application to a variety of network media, including local area networks, enterprise networks, Internet and wireless networks. But NAT (network address translation) traversal problem is baffling H.323 communication due to complex network situations and flaws of protocol. The existing traversal methods are not suitable for all network situations. They often require upgrading or adding other deceives and protocols to support call procedure. In this paper, A NAT traversal method based on gatekeeper (GK) for media transport is proposed. This scheme only needs a gatekeeper server, which is able to route call. This resolving method is also very easy to implement without changing network situations. And it is very available for communications with many NAT deceives in applications. The mechanism may be used as the short-term solution for the NAT traversal problem in H.323 system.

The present work practices a previously published layered middleware design architecture that can integrate a rich set of Java APIs into the OMG CORBA Audio/Video Streaming Framework. In this design, JMF, CORBA Audio/Video Streaming Service, CORBA, and JRE are functioned as a programming language domain-specific middleware, a common middleware service, a distribution middleware, and a host infrastructure middleware layers, respectively. The current work utilizes the OMG audio/video stream binding mechanism in order to provide a standardized interoperability of streams between CORBA and JMF environments. Through a generalized mapping, CORBA objects could directly manipulate JMF classes. Although the current high level layered design work is only applicable to OMG compliant Java ORBs, this design concept could be extended into other language specific ORBs by utilizing other programming language domain specific service layers, i.e., other programming language APIs. © 2005 IEEE.

multimedia networking applications are becoming increasingly popular and the ongoing research in this field is providing a progressively more sophisticated understanding of the underlying principles of providing quality of service (QoS) for networked multimedia applications. To provide education in this emerging area, which is of increasing importance for electrical, computer, and industrial engineers, a course on multimedia QoS networking has been developed at Arizona State University. To provide the students with a balanced education in the fundamental principles and in the current development trends the course structure has three components: 1) lecture (40% of class contact time), in which the instructor presents the basic principles, 2) topic exploration (30% of contact time), which expands on the basic principles and explores current trends through student presentations, and 3) paper critique, in which the readings from the recent literature are critically evaluated and examined in instructor-led discussions (30% of contact time). The on-campus offering of the course was evaluated through the assessment of student work, student surveys, and student interviews. The assessment indicates the students were very positive toward the course structure, especially the paper critiques and their in-class discussions

In this paper, we discuss a hierarchical group protocol aiming at reducing communication and computation supporting for realizing a scalable group. In traditional hierarchical groups, a pair of parent and child subgroups communicate with one another through a gateway process. A gateway process implies performance bottleneck and single point of failure. In order to increase the throughput and reliability of inter-subgroup communication, messages are in parallel transmitted in a striping way through multiple channels between the subgroups. We discuss how to design a hierarchical group for realizing high-performance multimedia communication among large number of peer processes.
