With the fast development of technology and science, there come various changes and demands in consumer service market. The plan integrating "broadband network" with "application service" is potential and farsighted in network industry. Academic and technological institutes start researching and promoting the MOD (multimedia on demand) system, which transits multimedia information and provides users interactive interface via setop-box in broadband network. Implement cost, learning content and user behaviors might be taken into account when constructing MOD system. Besides, how to increase the MOD's capability of interaction and portability is a practical issue. Sharing and participating are of great importance for network users. This paper first proposes a digital content platform, which combines peer-to-peer (P2P) technology and sharable content object reference model (SCORM). Such a mechanism makes it possible for content providers to share versatile multimedia information with others in digital channel. Followed by a description of file sharing methods in P2P framework. Then, we advocate incremental k-nearest-neighbor (k-NN) algorithm analyzing SCORM metadata and user access records to improve system load, content feature classification efficiency, file index distribution and user query-feedback speed.

As demands for streaming video and audio over the Internet gains more and more popularity, proper caching of multimedia streams has become increasingly important. Previous researches on caching proxy have not addressed the problem of single stream image and stream network prefetch. In this paper, we discuss principles and mechanism of SSI in detail. Specifically, we give corresponding modification algorithms for receiving and sending streaming data in the caching proxy. After analyzing of different scenarios of stream network prefetch, we present a theoretical model of stream network prefetch. According to this model, we propose an effective stream network prefetch policy based on RTCP packets feedback and RTP packets network delay. Testing results show that our proposed mechanisms are valid and effective.

Application-level protocol abstraction is required to support seamless mobility in next generation heterogeneous wireless networks. Session initiation protocol (SIP) provides such an abstraction in providing mobility support in such networks. However, the handoff procedure with SIP suffers from undesirable delay and hence packet loss for some cases, which is detrimental to applications such as voice over IP (VoIP) or streaming video with stringent quality of service (QoS) requirements. In this paper, we propose a SIP based architecture that supports soft handoff for IP centric wireless networks alleviating the problem of packet loss. The proposed architecture ensures that there is no packet loss and the end-to-end delay jitter is kept under control, thus maintaining two important parameters dictating the QoS for streaming multimedia applications

Video broadcast services have become increasingly popular on packet-based wireless networks, such as 1xEV-DO and HSDPA which support high data rate. In this paper we propose a resource allocation algorithm for scalable video broadcast over such wireless networks. Our algorithm allocates time slots among the video layers of a scalable video and applies adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) to each video layer to maximize the sum of utilities for heterogeneous users with varying QoS requirements. It also considers competing video sessions and allocates time slots among them according to user preferences. Additionally, its polynomial time-complexity allows for online resource allocation that is necessary for real-time video services. Simulation experiments show that our algorithm outperforms a single-layer video broadcast with fixed modulation and coding (FMC), used in broadcast and multicast services (BCMCS) in the CDMA2000 system, and produce a near-optimal allocation.

Peer-to-peer (P2P) multimedia application is expected to be one of the most important services supported by the next generation networks. However, how to balance server load in reducing the peak network traffic for a given P2P network is still a challenge. This paper performs dynamic server redirect (DSR) techniques that blocked requests from high load peer can be redirect to the peer which has high available bandwidth and very low request arrival rate. A novel and approximate model for evaluating the relationship between the request blocking probability and increased cost is proposed. Based on the performance analysis of request blocking, the P2P system can dynamically find efficient ways of using available bandwidth within the acceptable increased cost. Numerical results show that the dynamic server redirect scheme significantly reduces request blocking rate

On the one hand, the challenge of meeting various security requirements in the mobile and wireless environment is difficult, compared to the fixed and wired environment, because of the very nature of radio communications. On the other hand, wireless networks such as GSM, PCS and CDMA, which are predominantly circuit-switched voice networks, have been shielded from the vulnerabilities that exist in the Internet. With the introduction of the IP multimedia subsystems (IMS) solutions, data, voice and video is accessible using UMTS and CDMA2000 networks via the Internet. The current mobile equipment has the capability to work with multiple radio interfaces using heterogeneous radio access networks. Mobile subscribers have also become truly mobile since they are not constrained by mobile equipment, networks and applications. However, information between individuals has to be protected. Therefore, there exist always the notion of private and public communications. In the mobile and wireless environment, the challenge is private communications between peers over non private domains. This paper describes schemes offering secure communications between mobile nodes using virtual private networking technologies based on IP security (IPSec). In addition, mobility management is done using mobile IP along with route-optimization techniques. This paper also describes how latencies suffered by real-time traffic when traversing IPSec and mobile IP tunnels can be reduced so that real-time delay constraints can be meet.

The College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the National Taiwan University has identified the area of content science for media-rich life, broadly construed, as one of core areas for the college's future directions. One major aspect of this project is to develop the enabling technology for reconfigurable platforms for multimedia applications. Specifically, the goal is to develop reconfigurable platforms of system-on-a-chip (SoC) components for the applications to support the needs of multi-modal multimedia contents and to provide rapid system prototyping. The faculties in the College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science have formed a multi-discipline team to develop such technology. Our team includes seven faculties and more than thirty students from the college. This short report describes the reconfigurable platform for content science research activities currently underway by our team. Our current activities include to develop the technology to analyze the critical path for avoiding hardware contention, to minimize the use of logic components, to design the multimedia IPs, to optimally route the bus and place the logic units, to design energy efficient cache, to evaluate the performance and power consumption, to design the algorithm for temporal floor-planning/placement.

In this paper, we propose a hybrid architecture to integrate peer-to-peer (P2P) streaming approaches with content distribution networks (CDNs). We further utilize multiple description (MD) coding in this architecture to address challenging issues in P2P approaches such as low peer upstream bandwidth and low quality assurance. The proposed schemes take advantage of the high availability of CDNs, the flexibility of layered MD, and the high scalability of P2P approaches to better utilize peer upstream bandwidth, reduce server load, and assure service quality. In addition, we evaluate the performance of the proposed approach through analysis and simulation
