This paper describes a flexible, modular system for processing of multimedia information acquired with mobile devices. The workflow is described using a sample scenario where a user takes a photo with an MMS-capable cell phone, sends it to a corresponding service for face identification, and receives the meta-information via SMS as a response. The main component in this chain is a gateway, which offers interfaces for different networking technologies on the one side and interfaces for various multimedia services on the other side. The design of the gateway considers the fast development of mobile technology by implementing the architecture as open as possible.

For bursty traffic with a large peak-to-average ratio and a stochastic channel, is it possible to minimize the response time of every flow while maximizing the effective channel utilization and maintain fairness? This is the question we address in this paper. In wireless networks with a single shared channel, channel arbitration is a core issue for flows with throughput and timeliness requirements on the uplink and peer-to-peer links where the instantaneous demand is not known. This paper presents a link layer frame scheduling algorithm for delay-sensitive variable bit rate traffic, such as high-rate multimedia (MPEG-4), over a wireless channel. We evaluate our scheduling algorithm over two Medium Access Control (MAC) architectures and compare it to four scheduling strategies that cover a range of classes: TDMA, proportional share algorithms, real-time scheduling algorithms, and size-based scheduling algorithms. Detailed simulation results, with full-length MPEG-4 movie traces over a fading wireless channel, show that Fair-Shortest Remaining Processing Time (Fair-SRPT) outperforms other algorithms in terms of QoS performance, channel utilization efficiency and response time under all utilization levels and channel error rates. Our Fair-SRPT scheme avoids the classical SRPT problems of preferring small jobs by using normalization to mean reservations. An attractive feature of the proposed approach is that it can be implemented with no modifications to the IEEE 802.11e and IEEE 802.15.3 high-rate personal area network standards.

This paper aims at introducing possibilities of self organization for packet-switched networks at the scheduling management level. By discussing already existing scheduling strategies, we identify several contrasting needs that should be jointly addressed. The employment of the same algorithm for the whole network leads to low performance. On the other hand, adjusting the management cell-by-cell is not feasible and requires coordination. Hence, we propose a general framework for the scheduler, which can be easily tuned by means of a neural network. In this way, cells are grouped and self-similarities are identified, so that the differentiation in the management is lighter and a significant performance improvement can be achieved. Moreover, a general tunability of the system is introduced, allowing to cut the right trade-off between system complexity and QoS in a simple way.

In this paper, we propose the two-tiered proxy system that offers seamless media service to mobile nodes in mobile computing environment. We also propose the enhanced prefetching strategy. Our proxy system can provide seamless multimedia streaming service and supports user mobility efficiently. We show that the initial delay of media service, handoff delay, and network traffic are reduced in our simulation. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

Personal experience computing is about computing support for recording, storing, retrieving, editing, analyzing, and sharing of personal experiences. In this paper, we present our design, implementation and evaluation of a mobile authoring tool called mProducer. mProducer enables a user to generate personal experience content using a mobile device anytime, anywhere. To address challenges in both limited system resources and user interface constraints on a mobile device, mProducer provides several innovative system techniques and UI designs. (1) The Storage Constrained Uploading (SCU) algorithm uploads large multimedia data to remote servers, in order to alleviate the problem of limited storage on a mobile device. (2) Sensor-Assisted Automated Editing utilizes a tilt sensor on the mobile device to automate the detection and removal of blurry frames resulting from excessive amount of camera shaking. This sensor-based solution requires small processing overhead, and it is considered a good alternative to computational-expensive image processing techniques for detecting shaking artifacts. (3) Map-based content management interface incorporates a GPS receiver on a mobile device to record location meta-data for each recording captured by a user, and enables easy, intuitive content navigation on a small screen. (4) Keyframe-based editing enables a user to edit content using only keyframes. We have conducted user studies to evaluate overall editing experience, user satisfaction in the editing quality, task performance time, ease-of-use, and learnability. The results of user studies have shown that keyframe-based editing works best with a storyboard interface. In general, users have found mProducer to be both fun and easy to use on a mobile device. This paper presents a novel effective scheme of configuring Wireless Personal Area Networks (WPANs), called Master-driven Connection Control (MaCC). WPANs are based on a new wireless technology, which enables portable and mobile computing devices, and consumer electronic appliances to communicate with each other Assuming that WPANs operate in a master-slave style, we exploit the information about master-slave relationships for identifying a network topology in an ad hoc fashion. Specifically, MaCC supports routing, providing the minimum-hop paths that cannot be obtained by flooding algorithms. In addition, it constructs the optimal topology on demand along the minimum-hop paths dynamically, because the performance of routing is dependent on network topologies. These functions need only a few control messages to achieve, and so can avoid excessive message propagation by flooding causing frame collisions in the WPANs. MaCC has several prominent features: self-direction of every node, adaptive formation of networks, and minimization of hop counts for routing control. In this paper we describe the details of MaCC and analyze its overhead about initialization, routing discovery, and reconfiguration. The results show control messages propagated in a MaCC network at route discovery are reduced to less than one half of those in a network utilizing pure flooding.

The proliferation of multimedia-capable mobile devices and ubiquitous high-speed network technologies to deliver multimedia objects has fueled the demand of mobile streaming multimedia. A necessary criterion for the mass acceptance of mobile devices is acceptable battery life of these devices. This paper explores linear prediction-based client-side strategies to reduce the wireless network interface card (WNIC) energy consumption by transitioning the WNIC to a lower power consuming sleep state. The basic idea of this strategy is to selectively choose proper periods of time to suspend communication by switching the WNIC to sleep state. A linear prediction-based time series forecasting technique is used to predict future no-data intervals. Simulation results show that linear prediction-based strategy gives better results than those based on simple averaging [Surendar Chandra et al., (2002)].

The increase in the number of users and the development of their needs towards multimedia services with quality of service expectations set challenges to mobile radio network operators whose spectral resources are limited. A judicious resource allocation policy will limit call dropping due to handovers and improve bandwidth allocation between users, taking into account factors related to QoS expectations. QoS acceptance is defined by the SLA contract specifying the parameters of the different levels of acceptance. At global level, new call or handover call acceptance is based on a collective and consensual decision between the different participating networks. Such a consensus aims to take a consistent decision to reserve resources according to one of the levels of service predefined by the caller SLA and then to allow the caller to renegotiate the level of service QoS according to traffic load fluctuation, or to negotiate new resources for new applications requested during the session. The consensus algorithm is parametrized in accordance with the network configuration and take account of QoS constraints such as: new call blocking probability, handovers dropping probability, channels utilization rate...These parameters are deduced by applying Markovian chain with two dimensions. It is adopted to model the different service classes which negotiate the network.

Video streaming has become a popular form of transferring video over the Internet. With the emergence of mobile computing needs, a successful video streaming solution demands 1) uninterrupted services even with the presence of mobility and 2) adaptive video delivery according to current link properties. We study the need and evaluate the performance of adaptive video streaming in vertical handoff scenarios. We use universal seamless handoff architecture (USHA) to create a seamless handoff environment, and use the video transfer protocol (VTP) to adapt video streaming rates according to "eligible rate estimates". Using testbed measurements experiments, we verify the importance of service adaptation, as well as show the improvement of user-perceived video quality, via adapting video streaming in the vertical handoffs.
