Content-based image retrieval is currently a very important area of research in the area of multimedia databases. Plenty of research work has been undertaken to design efficient image retrieval techniques from image or multimedia databases. Although a large number of indexing and retrieval techniques have been developed, there are still no universally accepted feature extraction, indexing and retrieval techniques available. In this paper, we present an up-to-date review of various content-based image retrieval systems. Since the volume of literature available in the field is enormous, only selected works are mentioned.

It is important to improve the knowledge of preventative measures among low-income people. A multimedia-assisted public health courseware would be far more cost-effective rather than providing systems to support high-income doctors. In order to give poor people educations on preventing infectious diseases intelligible narration and impressive representation are indispensable. We have realized this with multimedia technology in Internet environment, and we have developed a courseware on preventing infectious diseases. At this time this courseware is in English and Bengali languages. The presentation in many languages is very important, therefore, we have developed the database which creates web based information in various languages. IP multicasting has naturally been considered the ideal technique to be used with multimedia communications. Unfortunately, current multicast protocols do not consider the dynamic membership. Therefore, we propose a time and distance-based multicast algorithm (TDBMA) for IPv6 mobile networks. The TDBMA is subject to time and distance. A foreign network is qualification to join the existing multicast tree only its value of time and distance is larger than a computed threshold. The experimental analyses are presented to characterize the performance of the proposed algorithm.

In this paper, we propose an adaptive bandwidth framework for supporting multiple classes of multimedia services with different quality of service (QoS) requirements in the next generation of wireless cellular networks. The framework combines the following components: (i) a threshold-based bandwidth allocation policy. (ii) an efficient threshold-type call admission control (CAC) algorithm, and (iii) a bandwidth adaptation algorithm (BAA). The framework can be modeled as a multi-dimensional Markov chain, and therefore, a product form solution is provided. The QoS metrics - new call blocking probability, handoff call dropping probability, and degradation probability are derived. The analytical results are supported by simulation and show that this work improves the service quality by minimizing the handoff call dropping probability.

Change can be observed in our environment and in the technology we build. While changes in the environment happen continuously and implicitly, our technology has to be kept in sync with the changing world around it. Although for some of the changes we can prepare, for most of them we cannot. This is especially true for next generation mobile communication systems that are expected to support the creation of a ubiquitous society where virtually everything is connected and made available within an organic information network. Resources frequently join or leave the network, new types of media or new combinations of existing ones are used to interact and cooperate, and services are tailored to preferences and needs of individual customers to better meet their needs. We outline our research in the area of dynamic service adaptation to provide concepts and technologies allowing for such environments.

This paper introduces a novel Quality of Service Adaptive Call Admission Control (QoS-AdCAC) framework for next generation broadband wireless cellular networks supporting wireless multimedia services with different classes of traffic and diverse bandwidth requirements. In this work, each base station locally, independently of other base stations in the network, differentiates between new and handoff calls for each class of traffic by assigning a threshold to each class according to its QoS requirements. The threshold values change dynamically in order to respond to the varying traffic conditions. The main feature of the proposed framework is its ability to simultaneously achieve several design goals, which makes it suitable for real time execution. Simulation results show the strength of our proposed framework.

In a server-proxy-client 3-tier architecture of the wireless mobile network, proxies should be dynamically assigned to serve mobile hosts according to geographical dependency and the network situation. The goal of proxy handoff is to allow a mobile host still can receive packets from the corresponding server even though its served proxy is switched from the current one to the other one. A 3-tier multimedia mobile transmission platform, called MMTP, is proposed to solve the proxy handoff problem in the IPv6-based wireless mobile network. In MMTP, a proxy handoff scheme, which is based on the application layer anycast technique, is proposed to select from a number of candidate proxies according to the load balance concern and wireless network situation concern.

Computer game development has raised many challenges to the computer science. Among them, human computer interaction and networking are two fundamental aspects. We propose a multi-player game framework with a speech interface based on existing speech synthesis and recognition engines. To study this framework, we have implemented a popular and historic Chinese game Mahjong. We describe the implementation by its speech interface, networking, and graphics user interface (GUI). We conducted experiments over the Internet. Four Pentium III 450 MHz PCs (128MB RAM and 4GB hard disk) were used with one PC taking the roles as the server and client at the same time. The speech interface has proven to enhance the human computer interaction as reported by the participants.
