In recent literature a powerful multiple description product coding scheme for protection of progressively encoded source streams has been devised that disperses information evenly between all description packets. Also, techniques were proposed to protect these packets equally by an optimal channel coder (found by exhaustive search). The contribution of this paper is to show that equal protection of all descriptions is suboptimal when the channel varies with time despite the fact that all descriptions have equal importance. We propose a theoretical framework for computing the globally optimal channel protection assignment for a given set of available channel coders under some idealized assumptions. For more practical scenarios we propose an optimized uneven packet protection scheme that outperforms equal protection schemes in terms of the expected distortion of received sources. Simulations of an image transmission system that resembles a 3G high bitrate link is provided where our unequal protection scheme improves the average PSNR of the received images by more than 1.3dB.

We proposed a ubiquitous 1-to-k media streaming architecture in which IPv4 and IPv6 clients in the transitive environment can be served simultaneously. The architecture is achieved by the adoption of multicast transition gateway (MTG). The deployment of MTGs in the architecture induces the requirement of efficiently selecting a proper MTG for streaming relay. An MTG selection framework is also designed for this issue.

Providing multimedia services with quality of service (QoS) guarantees in next generation wireless cellular networks poses great challenges due to the scarce radio bandwidth. Effective call admission control (CAC) is important for the efficient utilization of the limited bandwidth. In this paper we present an optimal Markov decision-based call admission control (MD-CAC) policy for the multimedia services that characterize the next generation of wireless cellular networks. A Markov decision process (MDP) is used to represent the CAC policy. The MD-CAC is formulated as a linear programming problem with the objectives of maximizing the system utilization while ensuring class differentiation and providing quantitative fairness guarantees among different classes of users. Through simulation, we show that the MD-CAC policy upholds the handoff call dropping probability required by each traffic class and provides fairness for all classes while maximizing the bandwidth utilization.

Smart antenna is suggested to be used in future generation wireless and mobile networks to provide service with high capacity and quality. In this paper, we propose an analytical model for a novel multimedia wireless and mobile networks using smart antennas. The smart antenna in the proposed system provides space division multiple access (SDMA) scheme in which channels can be reused in one cell and system capacity is improved dramatically. In this paper, two kinds of multimedia services, real-time voice service and non-real-time data service, are taken into consideration. In the proposed system model, channels are divided into four parts which will serve different types of requests and calls. In this way, service quality is guaranteed for real-time voice service at the cost of the tolerable quality decrease for non-real-time data service. The system is analyzed by a four-dimensional Markov chain. Blocking probabilities of originating calls and handoff requests are obtained from our formulas. As we expect, system capacity and performance are highly improved by employing smart antennas.

In a mobile ad hoc network (MANET), packet broadcast is common and frequently used to disseminate information. Broadcast consume large amount of bandwidth resource, which is scarce in MANET environment. The problem is to find the ideal forward node set so as to minimize the bandwidth consumed, which is a NP-Complete problem. In this paper we will investigate three dominant node approximation algorithms: dominant pruning, total dominant pruning and partial dominant pruning algorithm. An extension to the original algorithms, modified termination criteria, is proposed. Simulation results show that the new termination criteria ensure the same coverage using a reduced number of forward nodes. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

In recent years the idea of access network has changed radically, and the diffusion of wireless technologies, and especially IEEE 802.11 compliant devices, has made wireless connections increasing popular. Despite the great success of the IEEE 802.11 standard, several problems concerning security, power consumption and quality of service of wireless LANs remain partially unsolved. The QoS issue is especially relevant for multimedia communications, generally needing performance guarantees from the network infrastructure to fulfill application requirements. In this paper we analyze the behavior of the Frame Dropping (FD) mechanism, a QoS mechanism for multimedia communications using simulations, and compare it with that of another well assessed mechanism: Distributed Fair Scheduling (DFS). Simulation results show that, though DFS achieve a better channel utilization, FD behavior is comparable with that of DFS under all the main performance indices, and it exhibits effective traffic differentiation capabilities.

Recently developed networked services have been demanding architectures that accommodate an increasingly diverse range of applications requirements (e.g. mobility, multicast, QoS), as well as system requirements (e.g. specialized processing hardware). This is particularly crucial for architectures of network systems where the lack of extensibility and interoperability has been a constant struggle, hindering the provision of novel services. It is also clear that to achieve such flexibility these systems must support extensibility and reconfigurability of the base functionality subsequent to the initial deployment. We present a component model that addresses these concerns. We also discuss the application of the component model in network processor-based programmable networking environments and discuss how our approach can offer a more deployable, flexible and extensible networking infrastructure.

The design of micro-mobility management protocols stands out as an important challenge in integrating wireless networks into the IP-based Internet, especially when such networks are deployed for real-time multimedia applications. We present a new hierarchical model for micro-mobility management with quality of service (QoS) capability for the wireless access network. The scheme includes an anchor selection and anchor optimization algorithm with QoS support, and efficient techniques for intra-anchor handoff, inter-anchor handoff, and paging management. In addition to QoS support, the proposed scheme has the advantages of robustness, scalability, load balancing and fast handoff. Simulation results of our model indicate that it provides good handoff performance in the presence of multiple QoS classes of applications.

Constrained cost minimization in QoS routing for multipoint communication groups is the problem of path construction to achieve efficiency of group communication while meeting the delay-bound of the application. Proposed models to date, using the source- or core- based approches, search solely a subdomain of the solution space. In this paper, we analyze this problem, and propose a new solution, SPAN. Our model executes on multiple metrics for constrained multipoint communication, and spans the entire range of solutions in its search. SPAN is distributed, and generates concsistently more efficient results compared to the existing algorithms in the literature.

Existing solutions for QoS-aware routing in mobile multihop networks attempt to discover a QoS-satisfactory route for the user at the user's current location. If a suitable route is not available at the current location, the user is denied access. This approach does not take advantage of the special characteristics of mobile multihop networks. That is, users in these networks are mobile and their connectivity is dependent on their location and the locations of other users. By changing their location, users can alter their connectivity characteristics and potentially obtain better service from the network. In this paper, we propose enhancing QoS-aware routing protocols to take advantage of this characteristic. With our solution, if a satisfactory route is not available at the user's current location, the protocol discovers a nearby location where a better route is available. The user can then choose to move to the suggested location to improve the received quality of service. We demonstrate our idea by appropriately extending a QoS-sensitive version of the AODV routing protocol, and presenting a simulation-based evaluation. Simulation results show the effectiveness and efficiency of our idea.
