This paper discusses a communication model to exchange multimedia messages in a group of multiple processes. Quality of Service (QoS) required by an application has to be supported. In traditional communication protocols like TCP, a process can reliably deliver messages to one or more than one process. In the group communication, a process sends messages to multiple processes while receiving messages from multiple processes in a group. We propose a notification-based data transmission procedure to exchange multimedia messages with processes so as to satisfy QoS requirement.

In order to achieve fault-tolerant distributed systems, checkpoint-recovery has been researched and many protocols have been designed. A global checkpoint taken by the protocols have to be consistent. In conventional network applications, a global checkpoint is consistent if there is no inconsistent message in any communication channel. However in multimedia network applications, there are different requirements for time-constrained failure-free execution and large-size message transmissions where lost of a part of the message is acceptable by applications. This paper proposes novel criteria, consistency and duplexity for global checkpoints in multimedia network applications.

For many on-line games, user experience is impacted significantly by network latency. As on-line games and on-line game servers proliferate, the ability to discover and connect to nearby servers is essential for maintaining user satisfaction. In this paper, we present a redirection service for on-line games based on the geographic location of players relative to servers. As our results show, the service better meets client demand, saving each client and the Internet as a whole, thousands of miles of networking inefficiency.

In this paper we study the fundamental problem of allocating with efficiency and fairness the available resources in a CDMA wireless system that supports multi-rate multimedia services. We propose the Channel Adaptive Rate Scheduling (CARS) algorithm which adopts the use of dynamically assigned data rates that match the channel capacity in order to improve the system throughput and overcome the problems associated with the channel chnaging conditions, the variable system capacity and the transmission power limitation. In addition to the throughput improvement CARS also achieves the objective of fairness by adjusting the users' weights dynamically. The performance analysis and evaluation of our proposed algorithm is achieved via modeling and simulation in terms of achievable throughput and fairness.

In this paper we present a new admission control algorithm that exploits the degradability property of applications to improve the performance of the system in pervasive networking environments. The algorithm is based on setting aside a portion of the resources as reserves and managing it intelligently so that the total utility of the system is maximized. We also applied our Soft-QoS framework to the admission controlling and resource scheduling for ubiquitous multimedia devices, such as PDA or VOD servers, where multimedia applications can generally tolerate certain variations on QoS parameters. It exploits the findings about human tolerance to degradation in quality of multimedia streams.

Mobile multimedia systems must provide application quality of service (QoS) in the presence of dynamically varying and multiple resource constraints (e.g., variations in available CPU time, energy, and bandwidth). Researchers have therefore proposed adaptive systems that can respond to changing resource availability and application demands. All system layers can benefit from adaptation, but fully exploiting these benefits requires a new cross-layer adaptation framework to coordinate the adaptations in the different layers. This paper presents such a framework and its first prototype, called GRACE-1. The framework supports application QoS under CPU and energy constraints via coordinated adaptation in the hardware, OS, and application layers. Specifically. GRACE-1 uses global adaptation to handle large and long-term variations, setting application QoS, CPU allocation, and CPU frequency/voltage to qualitatively, new levels. In response to small and temporary variations, it uses local adaptation within each layer. We have implemented the GRACE-1 prototype on a laptop system with an adaptive processor. Our experimental results show that, compared to previous approaches that exploit adaptation in only some of the layers or in an uncoordinated way, GRACE-1 can provide higher overall system utility in several cases.

Widespread availability of high-speed networks and fast, cheap computation have rendered high-quality Media-on-Demand (Mol) feasible. Research on scalable MoD has resulted in many efficient schemes that involve segmentation and asynchronous broadcast of media data, requiring clients to buffer and reorder out-of-order segments efficiently for serial playout. In such schemes, buffer space requirements run to several hundred megabytes and hence require efficient buffer management techniques involving both primary memory and secondary storage: while disk sizes have increased exponentially, access speeds have not kept pace at all. The conversion of out-of-order arrival to in-order playout suggests the use of external memory priority queues. but their content-agnostic nature prevents them from performing well under MoD loads. In this paper, we propose and evaluate a series of simple heuristic schemes which, in simulation studies and in combination with our scalable MoD scheme, achieve significant improvements in storage performance over existing schemes.

A video server may need to reserve resources in order to meet the Quality of Service (QoS) requirements of the various clients that it services. We present an admission control strategy that provides deterministic admission to the minimum or necessary layers and statistical admission to the higher layers of a client video stream accessing variable bit-rate multiresolution video. An efficient data placement scheme called Partial-Bundled is proposed and compared with other data placement strategies. In the event of a node failure, the load on the failed node is distributed across the functional nodes. Therefore, the load on each node is increased by a fraction depending on the data replication scheme used, and it may be necessary to degrade the resolutions of the streams. Two heuristic algorithms to provide for graceful degradation in the presence of disk failure are described. The heuristic algorithms attempt to maximize the rewards (related to average quality of a stream) while reducing the resolution of clients.
