We present a design and implementation of a Flexible Videoconference System, FVCS. FVCS aims to reduce the botheration of the users under operational environments with insufficient computational resources, such as the Internet environment with the small-scale computers at home and offices, by embedding flexibility to the conventional videoconference system. In this paper, we propose a design and implementation of FVCS with knowledge-based multi-agent framework. We implement some kinds of prototype systems of FVCS with different types of knowledge embedded in the agent. We also perform some experiments using the prototype systems to evaluate the adaptability of the systems in response to the observed operational situations. From the results of the experiments, the adaptability is influenced by knowledge of agent, and we conclude that the knowledge-based design and implementation is reasonable for construction of FVCS.

The convergence of telecommunications, computing and content industries has been one of the major trends during the recent years. The convergence has lead to the creation of a wide range of multimedia services, which are available in digital form through broadband networks. There is a need for network nodes that are capable of interfacing to different kinds of networks and implementing a programmable service platform for multimedia services. As a solution to this need, this paper introduces the Media Switch, which is able to combine different switching disciplines into a compact fabric and provides a platform for multimedia services. In this paper we propose an integrated bandwidth management and call admission control scheme applicable in wireless networks that support multiple services with different QoS requirements. The proposed scheme is achieved via i) the integration of a position-assisted and mobility-based predictive advanced bandwidth reservation mechanism that facilitates the seamless operation of the handoffprocess and ii) a bandwidth reconfiguration based call admission control strategy that supports flexible QoS management. The comparison of the achievable performance of our proposed scheme with the corresponding results of conventional systems demonstrate that our integrated strategy can alleviate the problem of over-reservation, support seamless operation throughout the wireless network and increase significantly the system resource utilization.

Ad Hoc system with high topology changing rate makes routing extremely unstable. However, stability is an important issue especially for designing a routing with QoS provision. Recently, the availability of small, inexpensive, and low-power GPS receivers realizes the location based routing for Ad Hoc networks. Through the help of location information, the routing stability is significantly improved This paper investigates the QoS routing problem in Ad Hoc networks. We propose a location based routing protocol with QoS provision. The proposed scheme, named QoS-GRID, considers a Two-Tier-grid system configuration to reduce each mobile transmission power so as to enhance the bandwidth utilization. Simulation results show that QoS-GRID establishes a stable QoS guaranteed route meanwhile saves bandwidth.

The demand for higher computing power to effectively execute compute-intensive functions and thus more on-chip computing resources is ever increasing. On the other hand, applications that demand larger on-chip memory bandwidth are continuously emerging. In this paper, we propose Adaptive Register File computing (ARC) unit, a novel on-chip processing element that leverages application-specific processing capabilities. The ARC unit supplements a conventional register file to provide large memory bandwidth, or acts as a configurable computing unit to provide higher on-chip computing capacity, depending on the requirement of a specific application. When an out-of-order 8-wide issue superscalar processor is supplemented with the ARC unit to process matrix multiplication, a compute-intensive core function in most multimedia applications, results show a performance increase of up to 12%. Similarly, a 9% performance enhancement is seen when the matrix multiplication is performed In an out-of-order 4-wide issue superscalar processor supplemented with the ARC unit. The paper also discusses the microarchitecture level details for the implementation of the ARC unit.

This paper provides an overview and comparison of several prominent service discovery mechanisms currently available. It also introduces the At Home Anywhere Service Discovery Protocol (SDP@HA) design which improves on the current state of the art by accommodating resource lean devices, implementing a dynamic leader election for a central cataloguing device and embedding robustness to the service discovery architecture as an important criterion.

Most desktop applications execute on commodity operating systems and networks that support end-user requirements on a best-effort basis. As a result, the end-user cannot indicate to the underlying system the priority of networked applications when they are executed concurrently. Consequently, the performance of these applications is degraded non-deterministically based on the availability of resources and furthermore the degradation is not in the order and to the extent the end-user would want. This unpredictable degradation frequently affects the usefulness of a user session when multiple networked multimedia applications are executed simultaneously. We. designed and implemented a prioritization service that allows an end-user to prioritize applications according to the requirements of an individual session. The service has been implemented in user-space and incorporates several scheduling disciplines. We present the design and implementation of the service as well as its performance impact on the overall system.

As the multimedia applications such as Voice over IP (VoIP) and Audio/Visual (AV) streaming across the Internet emerge, many are working on the network architecture to extend such applications to the wireless networking domain. The emerging IEEE 802.11e Quality-of-Service (QoS)-enabled Wireless LAN (WLAN) is considered a strong candidate for the air interface for such multimedia applications thanks to the IP-centric network paradigm along with its inherent high-speed transmission capability. This paper provides an integrated wired/wireless network architecture interfacing QoS between user level traffic over IP using Differentiated Service (DiffServ) and transport level traffic using IEEE 802.11e WLAN. Our study investigates the correlations in end-to-end traffic management between DiffServ and 802.11e, and presents the hierarchical QoS signaling interface between DiffServ and 802.11e, in terms of traffic classifying, shaping and policing.
