Advances in wireless communication and mobile computing and networking are providing us with growing business opportunities and demands for multimedia services. Consumer networks, increasingly used for multimedia information and commercial content delivery, are destined to be heterogeneous. Meanwhile, for many multimedia services, security is an important component to restrict unauthorized multimedia content access and distribution. This suggests the need for new cryptography system implementations that can operate at different data rates, i.e., be scaled to various multimedia content, different network topology, changing bandwidth, and diverse receiver device capabilities. Content authentication is one important security tool for secure multimedia content communication. Conventional message authentication schemes do not offer suitable scalability for this new set of applications. In this paper, we study the design of scalable media data stream authentication when proxy caching is used and present a framework for multimedia authentication that supports various kinds of scalability.

We proposed the design and development of a multimedia communication system that utilizes multi-agent computing technology, called Flexible Video conference System (FVCS). As a part of FVCS, the user interface (UI) presented to the system's users also requires its flexibility. In this paper we propose the adaptive display management function that is used to improve the flexibility of UI in FVCS. Using this function, the user's preference and taste about UI could be obtained easily, and meanwhile the windows of applications in FVCS could be configured properly and automatically in response to the user's preference and the status of operating environment. The design of adaptive display management function based on multi-agents is then introduced in this paper. The structure of the agent organization, the functionality of each agent, as well as the manner of organizing and collaborating of the agents are presented in detail. Also, an implementation of the proposed design is introduced.

multimedia processing is becoming mainstream in today's computing environment. Teaching and learning multimedia basics are relevant to a diversity of scientific areas: signals and systems, data compression, computer graphics, image processing end understanding, digital audio and video, networking. The paper describes a generalized approach to multimedia teaching that is designed to present a multimedia-processing model and the basics of the related disciplines.

Owing to the rapidly growing interests and excitement in distributed computing and grid-enabled applications, the facilitating middleware layer has become a center of attention in recent years. At the same time, rapid advances in networking technologies such as the resilient packet ring (RPR) have evolved to carry all kinds of information including data, voice, multimedia and now, grid applications. However, little studies have been made to discover the interactions between grid middleware and the network layer. This paper therefore investigates the degree of which grid middleware design takes advantage of the underlying networking resources and features.

This paper discusses a communication model to exchange multimedia messages in a group of multiple processes. Quality of Service (QoS) required by an application has to be supported. In traditional communication protocols like TCP, a process can reliably deliver messages to one or more than one process. In the group communication, a process sends messages to multiple processes while receiving messages from multiple processes in a group. We propose a notification-based data transmission procedure to exchange multimedia messages with processes so as to satisfy the QoS requirement.

In order to achieve fault-tolerant distributed systems, checkpoint-recovery has been researched and many protocols have been designed. A global checkpoint taken by the protocols have to be consistent. In conventional network applications, a global checkpoint is consistent if there is no inconsistent message in any communication channel. However, in multimedia network applications, there are different requirements for time-constrained failure-free execution and large-size message transmissions where lost of a part of the message is acceptable by applications. This paper proposes novel criteria, consistency and duplexity for global checkpoints in multimedia network applications.
