In order to achieve fault-tolerant distributed systems, checkpoint-recovery has been researched and many protocols have been designed. A global checkpoint taken by the protocols have to be consistent. In conventional network applications, a global checkpoint is consistent if there is no inconsistent message in any communication channel. However, in multimedia network applications, there are different requirements for time-constrained failure-free execution and large-size message transmissions where lost of a part of the message is acceptable by applications. This paper proposes novel criteria, consistency and duplexity for global checkpoints in multimedia network applications.

In this paper we study the fundamental problem of allocating with efficiency and fairness the available resources in a CDMA wireless system that supports multi-rate multimedia services. We propose the Channel Adaptive Rate Scheduling (CARS) algorithm which adopts the use of dynamically assigned data rates that match the channel capacity in order to improve the system throughput and overcome the problems associated with the channel changing conditions, the variable system capacity and the transmission power limitation. In addition to the throughput improvement CARS also achieves the objective of fairness by adjusting the users' weights dynamically. The performance analysis and evaluation of our proposed algorithm is achieved via modeling and simulation in terms of achievable throughput and fairness.

A CHUM (Cooperating ad Hoc networking to sUpport Messaging) network is an ad hoc network in which mobile devices cooperate to reduce connection costs when accessing wireless global networks. We study how members of a CHUM network cooperate in order to download multimedia data, such as on-air TV programs. Each peer in a CHUM takes turns serving as a proxy, which makes an Internet connection and downloads multimedia data for the other members. Then, the proxy distributes the data to other peers using its ad hoc connection, which we call chumcast. The proxy maintains and updates peer membership information and determines the next CHUM proxy. The CHUM network includes a recovery procedure when a proxy fails or when a CHUM network partitions.

We present a design and implementation of a Flexible Videoconference System, FVCS. FVCS aims to reduce the botheration of the users under operational environments with insufficient computational resources, such as the Internet environment with the small-scale computers at home and offices, by embedding flexibility to the conventional videoconference system. We propose a design and implementation of FVCS with knowledge-based multiagent framework. We implement some kinds of prototype systems of FVCS with different types of knowledge embedded in the agent. We also perform some experiments using the prototype systems to evaluate the adaptability of the systems in response to the observed operational situations. From the results of the experiments, the adaptability is influenced by knowledge of agent, and we conclude that the knowledge-based design and implementation is reasonable for construction of FVCS.

Most desktop applications execute on commodity operating systems and networks that support end-user requirements on a best-effort basis. As a result, the end-user cannot indicate to the underlying system the priority of networked applications when they are executed concurrently. Consequently, the performance of these applications is degraded non-deterministically based on the availability of resources and furthermore the degradation is not in the order and to the extent the end-user would want. This unpredictable degradation frequently affects the usefulness of a user session when multiple networked multimedia applications are executed simultaneously. We designed and implemented a prioritization service that allows an end-user to prioritize applications according to the requirements of an individual session. The service has been implemented in user-space and incorporates several scheduling disciplines. We present the design and implementation of the service as well as its performance impact on the overall system.

This paper proposes an explicit rate-based end-to-end congestion control mechanism to alleviate congestion of multimedia traffic in packet switched networks such as the Internet. The congestion is controlled by adjusting the transmission rates of the sources in response to the feedback information from destination such as the buffer occupancy, packet arrival rate and service rate at the outgoing link, so that a desired quality of service (QoS) can be met. The QoS is defined in terms of packet loss ratio, transmission delay, power, and network utilization. Comparison studies demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme over New-Reno TCP (a variant of AIMD: additive increase multiplicative decrease) technique during simulated congestion. Since it is end-to-end, no router support is necessary, the proposed methodology can be readily applied to today's Internet, as well as for real-time video and voice data transfer in unicast networks.

Providing on-demand video streaming service over the Internet is a challenging task. In this paper, we propose DirectStream, a directory based peer-to-peer video streaming service that efficiently and cost-effectively provides video on-demand service with VCR operation support. We analytically and experimentally examine the system performance, and show that the proposed scheme can significantly reduce the workload posed on the server, and that it scales extremely well as the popularity of the video increases even if participating clients behave non-cooperatively. We propose a QoS parent selection algorithm to construct the appropriate peer-to-peer networks, and discuss how to provide continuous playback in the face of clients' early departures. Our study suggests that peer-to-peer networking is a promising technique to address scalability in on-demand streaming service.

An ad hoc system with high topology changing rate makes routing extremely unstable. However stability is an important issue, especially for designing a routing with QoS provision. Recently, the availability of small, inexpensive, and low-power GPS receivers realizes location based routing for ad hoc networks. With the help of location information, the routing stability is significantly improved. The paper investigates the QoS routing problem in ad hoc networks. We propose a location based routing protocol with QoS provision. The proposed scheme, named QoS-GRID, considers a two-tier-grid system configuration to reduce each mobile transmission power so as to enhance the bandwidth utilization. Simulation results show that QoS-GRID establishes a stable QoS guaranteed route and meanwhile saves bandwidth.
