For a wireless network to effectively deliver services to the mobile users, it must have an efficient way to keep track of them. For the next generation wireless multimedia networks which can provide wide bandwidth services, the radio resource becomes more competitive. Many strategies have been proposed to reduce the spectrum consumption of the users location update and paging messages, such as the PBS scheme. In this paper, we study the PBS scheme performance under various conditions by simulations. We also propose a new scheme - MPBS which includes user time information in the profile. The user location is computed by the system based on not only the distribution probability but also the system current time. The simulation results suggest that the MPBS scheme can generate far less signaling traffic and paging delay than the PBS scheme does.

The paper presents an interesting study that how the user surfing behavior with respect to the organization of a Web space affects the performance of a prefetch enabled proxy. We have conducted experiments based on a novel hyperspace aware prefetch proxy and have studied the prefetch performance on tree and complete graph. The study assesses the system's responsiveness as well as the background loads for various user interaction duration, surfing and prefetch sequences. The results show that awareness about the Web space and surfing sequence can greatly help in improving prefetch performance. Schemes such as these also conversely may enable professional content developers to create prefetch friendly collection for increased site responsiveness.

Chameleon is 100% Java middleware for multimedia streaming to heterogeneous mobile clients, which allows the dynamic configuration of protocols with respect to application requirements and available network resources. We evaluate the dynamic reconfigurability of the middleware in order to demonstrate runtime adaptation. We specially concentrate on the secondary quality transformation technique (SQT) of the middleware which enables clients to not only subscribe to media groups in accordance with available resources and network capacity but to also adapt media quality within each quality group dynamically in accordance to resource constraints.

In this paper we propose an integrated bandwidth management and call admission control scheme applicable in wireless networks that support multiple services with different QoS requirements. The proposed scheme is achieved via i) the integration of a position-assisted and mobility-based predictive advanced bandwidth reservation mechanism that facilitates the seamless operation of the handoff process and ii) a bandwidth reconfiguration based call admission control strategy that supports flexible QoS management. The comparison of the achievable performance of our proposed scheme with the corresponding results of conventional systems demonstrate that our integrated strategy can alleviate the problem of over-reservation, support seamless operation throughout the wireless network and increase significantly the system resource utilization.

CDMA (code division multiple access) systems are critical building blocks of future high performance wireless and mobile computing systems. While CDMA systems are very mature for voice services, their potentials in delivering high quality data services are yet to be investigated. One of the most crucial component in an advanced wideband CDMA system is the judicious allocation of bandwidth resources to both voice and high data rate services so as to maximize utilization while satisfying the respective quality of service requirements. Specifically, in a multicode CDMA system, the problem is to intelligently allocate codes to the users' requests. While previous work in the literature has addressed this problem from a capacity point of view, the fairness aspect, which is also important from the users' point of view, is largely ignored. In this paper, we propose a new code allocation approach that is channel adaptive and can guarantee fairness with respect to the users' channel conditions. Simulation results show that out approach is more effective than the proportional fair approach.

Many hierarchical routing algorithms have been proposed to support routing in mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs). Hierarchical structures have been used to provide scalable solutions in many large networking systems (L. Kleinrock, et al., (1997)), (Z. Xu, et al., (1998)) that have been designed. Building a hierarchical ad hoc network is a very promising way to achieve scalability. Previous protocols have been focusing on the schemes of how to cluster and how to establish hierarchical structure on the lowest level. In this paper we extend existing schemes to help build more distributed and stable hierarchical structures. We present the design and implementation of an algorithm required for rapid self-organization of network into multiple levels. We utilize gateways between clusters to relive the storage and communication overhead of clusterhead. Since each node can only act as clusterhead in single level at most, independency of different levels is increased and overhead of critical nodes is reduced as a result. The new algorithm also provides some insight into new possible designs of routing protocols.

Two technologies will drive broadband multimedia: ATM networking and MPEG-2 digital video compression. This text provides a basic look at MPEG-2 and ATM, the key enablers for digital video, showing how to integrate them into an efficient delivery system for next-generation digital video services. An example of the real TV network is shown and described with all its elements.

The next generation of "wireless e-health technologies" is a new and evolving topic in the areas of telemedical and telecare systems. These technologies involve the exploitation of mobile telecommunication and multimedia technologies to provide better access to healthcare personnel on the move, by removing the key disadvantage of trailing wires in current systems. These technologies provide equal access to medical information and expert care by overcoming the boundaries of separation that exist today between different users of such medical information. A great benefit to all users will be a more efficient use of resources and far greater location independence. In this paper we will address some notes and future trends in these emerging areas and their applications for m-health systems. We will also discuss current as well as future strategies for implementing these system within important healthcare sectors as well as critical medical environments.
