In distributed applications like teleconferences, a group of multiple processes are cooperating, where messages exchanged among the processes are required to be causally delivered. The processes are exchanging different kinds of multimedia objects in addition to traditional text data. The multimedia objects are longer than traditional messages and are structured. We discuss new types of causally precedent relations among multimedia objects transmitted in the network. We discuss a protocol to causally deliver multimedia objects in a group of processes. We also show the evaluation of the protocol.

The rapid development in portable computing platforms, distributed multimedia systems and wireless communication technologies has led to a significant interest in mobile multimedia and wireless networking. Video entertainment and multimedia Internet access over wireless networks are examples of future wireless personal communication systems. These, however, incur challenging technological issues. The synchronization of the multimedia objects among mobile clients is one of the most important of these issues. The task of synchronization in wireless multimedia systems is to eliminate variations and delays incurred during the transmission of multiple-media streams and to maintain the temporal order among the various media streams. We propose an efficient distributed multimedia synchronization algorithm for wireless and mobile multimedia systems to ensure and facilitate mobile clients' access to multimedia objects. We discuss the algorithm and provide its formal proof and correctness.

The main concern of this research is to design an adaptive bus model supporting distributed multimedia computing effectively in wireless or mobile networks. Key features of the model are as follows: first, the bus model has an ability, to control the binding at various levels explicitly. In addition to typical explicit binding characteristics, it has made possible a more flexible bus configuration from the application level to the transport level by hierarchical explicit binding control and controllable visibility of explicitness for security and integrity of computing. It enables the bus to adapt more flexibly in response to fluctuation of the environments. Second, the bus model has two-layer meta-object protocols (MOP), which are the component layer MOP and binding layer MOP, for implementation of adaptation. The component MOP plays the roles of inspecting and manipulating each component in the function and resource aspect. The binding MOP plays the roles of inspecting and manipulating each binding in the topology, access and flow aspect. Its architecture makes possible adaptations in integrity. Third, the bus model makes adaptations based on profiles, which is some collected information from the user, host and networks. The profile-based adaptation has made possible self-adaptation to some degree at each level and some prediction on usage pattern or resources.

To achieve a fault-tolerant distributed systems, checkpoint-recovery has been researched and many protocols have been designed. A global checkpoint taken by the protocols have to be consistent. For a conventional data communication network, a global checkpoint is defined consistent if there is neither orphan nor lost message. For a multimedia communication network, there are different requirements such as large-size massages, time-constrained failure free execution and allowance of a certain amount of lost packets. This paper proposes a new criteria of consistent global checkpoints for supporting a multimedia communication network. In addition, a checkpoint protocol with QoS based consistency is designed and applied to MPEG-2 data transmission.

Next-generation wireless communication networks aim at supporting multimedia services. It is a challenging problem to efficiently allocate limited and varying network resources in the wireless communication networks to a variety of multimedia services with different characteristics and requirements. In this paper, we extensively investigate the adaptive resource allocation for multimedia services in a wireless network environment. Both user mobility and the nature of multimedia traffic are taken into consideration to design our adaptive resource allocation scheme, which consists of call admission control, resource reservation and bandwidth adaptation for real-time video/audio applications, as well as scheduling for non-real-time data services. Simulation results show the strength of our proposed adaptive scheme.

The interest in mobile communication is extending from voice services to various mobile data services. The IS-95, IS-95A, IS-95B specifications of TIA/EIA provide a multimedia service by a multiplex layer. However, the present specifications just supports the multimedia service with a multiconnection by multicalls, and cannot support the service with a multiconnection by a single call. Thus, in order to provide the multimedia service with a multiconnection by a single call, that may be demanded later, there is inconvenience that must add special protocols for each multimedia service. This paper proposes a sub-multiplex layer that supports the multimedia service by a single call requiring a multiconnection. This sub-multiplex layer is activated by the indication of an application program and at this time an existing multiplex option is maintained. The sub-multiplex layer multiplexes voice and mobile data, and the upper multiple layer. Thus the voice and the mobile data are transmitted through a single voice path which was already set up. This function can provide the mobile multimedia service by a single call, and is compatible with the existing network model.

Computer networks require complex solutions for traffic shaping and for bandwidth management on links and switching nodes, in order to provide a reliable QoS-based infrastructure for multimedia and bandwidth-on-demand applications. A simpler and lightweight solution could be reached by a new approach in designing the network protocols. The evolution of the hardware technology will make available faster processing units and larger memories for network devices; this could lead to a radical change of paradigm in network design if a long term research plan for innovative network architectures became popular in the research community. The wide variety of arguments to be investigated requires a multidisciplinary approach, possibly involving several research groups worldwide from research institutions and industrial R&D. The main purpose of the article is to suggest some guidelines for designing an innovative architecture for computer networks. Our proposal descends from a circumstantial survey of existing technologies, and offers a general framework for individuating and approaching research topics of common interest in the networking environment.

A new multi-class call admission control mechanism is proposed which is based on dynamically forming a reservation pool for handoff requests. We first develop the notion of servicing various multi-class connections based on priority determined using the combined analysis of mobile movement information and the desired QoS requirements of multimedia traffic. We also provide a practical framework for determining the occurrence time of handoff request reservations. The simulation results show that the individual QoS criteria of multi-class traffic such as the handoff call dropping probability can be achieved within a targeted objective and the new call blocking probability is constrained to be below a given level.

We present an analysis of the needs of groups of individuals for positioning information using mobile multimedia terminals for accessing location-based information. We consider first a simple framework relating the needs of individuals and groups to information about the location of other group members. The concept of a layered service for delivering position-dependent information to mobile devices is discussed. We present the results of a study which found that people felt that organizing successful rendezvous was problematic but that this could be assisted by a suitably designed mobile positioning service. We introduce the main features of an implementation addressing the provision of position-sensitive groupware services.

Summary form only given, as follows. Modern vehicles are in fact computer networks on wheels. Up to 60 electronic control units are connected using various networking technologies such as CAN (Controler Area Network) or MOST (optical fibres for multimedia content). Many of the control units use state of the art microcontrollers and have complex analog and digital interfacing circuitry. Software is playing an ever increasing role in the definition of vehicle control functions. The speech is giving an overview on modern vehicle electronic architecture and its inherent hardware and software challenges. The growth fields of automotive electronics will be highlighted and examples of next generation applications will be given.
