In order to support the mobile and multimedia services efficiently on the next generation Internet and intranet, we need a more flexible and extensible network manager. We may consider the employment of TINA (Telecommunications Information networking Architecture), which is the software architecture to extend the capability of the IN (intelligent network), to cope with the changes of service requirement efficiently. In order to employ the TINA-based network manager for the Internet or intranet, however we need a TINA-SNMP inter-working function because the current management standard of the Internet and intranet is the SNMP. We propose an object abstract translator, which works in the TINA-SNMP gateway for the TINA-based network manager. The proposed object abstract translator is designed to increase the flexibility of the TINA-based network manager, and to assure the independency of the TINA-based network manager from the various SNMP agent implementation technologies.

We have developed an idea collecting software, called GMemo running on a personal digital assistant (IBM WorkPad). Users can collect and input ideas in free hand writing using GMemo immediately in anytime and anywhere, and use ideas as data for GUNGEN (GroUpware for a New idea GENeration consistent support system) directly. Nine persons have used GMemo for five months. The results of the application of GMemo show that a total of 290 pieces of data were collected and the mean value of characters in one idea was about 26, which was nearly the same as the conventional method of collecting ideas by paper media (e.g. post-it notes). We performed KJ method (one of the famous idea generation method in Japan) twice from collected data and the results of them were similar to those of the conventional KJ method.

In this paper we describe a distributed system approach for three-dimensional exploration in the context of high-performance computing, which supports postprocessing, online-visualization and interactive steering scenarios. Our processing chain consists of three instances (data source, streaming server, viewer), which can be distributed in high-performance networks and operated either in a full pipeline (on-the-fly 3D visualization, computational steering) or in asynchronously running pairs (visualization of prepared 3D scenes). It takes advantage of parallel data extraction, efficient 3D representation, and streaming protocols over TCP/IP.

A media filter can ensure full quality media playout at the high-performance computing and communicating environment while lowering to an appropriate media quality for the smooth playout in a limited bandwidth network. We present a new streaming architecture for the establishment of continuous media data flow over heterogeneous computer networks. Based on the new streaming architecture, we have developed a flexible and efficient audio/video transmission system. In order to eliminate heterogeneity problems found in networks, end-systems and applications, we adopt the concept of QoS media filter. The individual or receiver-driven quality of service requirement can be achieved through the application of a QoS media filtering mechanism.

Like interactive audio/video applications, distributed virtual environments (DVEs) require continuous, low-latency delivery of media. While end-system media adaptations and network-based forwarding services have been developed to support audio/video applications, it remains an open question whether these mechanisms can be either directly applied or adapted to realize the requirements of DVEs. We present the results of a study on the use of audio/video media adaptations and router-based active queue managements (AQM) to support the data-flows generated by the UNC nanoManipulator-a DVE interface to a scanned-probe microscope. We present a delay-jitter management scheme used to support a haptic force-feedback tracking/pointing device used in the nanoManipulator and an AQM scheme based on buffer allocation in routers to reduce packet loss. The results of early experiments are promising and provide evidence that a sophisticated virtual environment interface can operate over the Internet to control a remote microscope in real-time.

In the next generation cellular mobile multimedia networks, a resource allocation policy, which prioritizes handoff requests over new calls while making efficient use of the network resources, will be an essential component for successful operation. In this paper we develop a new handoff prioritized scheme which adapts the allocation policy according to the current traffic conditions. The goal is to minimize the new call blocking while keeping the handoff failures close to a targeted objective. This problem is formulated as a constrained semi-Markov decision process (SMDP) with average cost criterion. A simulation-based learning algorithm is developed to determine a control policy from direct interaction with the network without a priori knowledge of the network dynamics or traffic. Extensive simulations test the effectiveness of the algorithm under a variety of traffic conditions. Comparisons with other resource allocation policies, such as complete sharing and channel reservation, are presented.

The transition to digital information and networking of new digital devices lead to considerable changes in the consumer electronic industry. New applications will arise, offering more entertainment, comfort and flexibility. To achieve this, complex problems in communication and distributed systems need to be solved. High requirements on stability, usability, quality and price call for new solutions. This paper describes the concept of In-Home Digital Networks and will then in detail address the WWICE system. This new architecture provides a coherent system environment for the home. It focuses on services and applications, which can easily be accessed and controlled by the User. Application framework and middleware services of the layered software architecture efficiently support development of IHDN applications as well as flexible application control at runtime.

multimedia objects are difficult to query since much of the content of the object is beyond the interpretive capabilities of a computer. State-of-the-art multimedia content-based retrieval systems focus on post mortem analysis of the underlying data objects to derive semantic information. With the emergence of inexpensive I/O technology we can shift some of the burden of this content analysis to "smart" devices that can capture context information about a multimedia object. Context information includes the geographical location an object is created or used, identities of users, activities of users and other applications, etc. Such information can be used to index the multimedia objects to perform content-based queries with minimal signal processing. We are concerned with the design and implementation of a context-based retrieval system for IP-multicast videoconferences. The multimedia Internet Recorder and Archive (MIRA) models a videoconference as a Bayesian network that describes bounds on "cost" and "reliability" for a recording task. Context about a videoconference is derived from monitoring the RTCP control channel and messaging events that occur among meeting participants. MIRA creates an index of context information as an XML document that is used by clients to visualize, browse, and retrieve multimedia objects. MIRA also creates event-based transcripts as summaries of meetings. These transcripts are available over the WWW.

The multimedia Storage and Retrieval System described in this paper is aimed at storing and retrieving medical multimedia data such as images and videos. There are three significant problems that automatically need to be addressed: providing enough capacity to fit Terabytes of MPEG files, efficient extraction of video fragments from MPEG files and quality of service issues. We are working on two different approaches to build MMSRS. The first one, described in this article, utilizes commercial HSM software for managing the tertiary storage hardware. The second approach that we have started to investigate is an attempt to build a specialised storage management system from scratch.

The aim of the presented PARMED Project is to provide medical stuff with a large database of image and video data, distributed over several medical centers in Europe. This database is queried with user-friendly and intelligent interfaces. They are also responsible for processing the incoming video streams for the later use, i.e. for diagnostics or teleeducation. Other aspects of the project is to develop services for multimedia data management and archiving with quality of service requirements and the modeling of the video and image data.
