The position-guided sliding-window routing (PSR) protocol is a scalable single-tier routing protocol designed for operation in mobile ad hoc networking environments. Previous work has demonstrated that the PSR protocol possesses the scalability property and provides for very efficient routing thus being an extremely attractive solution for large scale ad hoc networks. PSR is based on is the superposition of link-state forwarding for local destinations and position-based forwarding for remote destinations, and the underlying principle behind its development is to reduce the network routing overhead by making the accuracy of the routing information in each node inversely proportional to its distance from any other node in the network. The use of multiple zones provides a method of implementing that principle in a discrete way. By selecting appropriately the number of zones and the corresponding radii of the zones our approach intends to control the routing overhead generation and propagation by making the overhead generation rate and propagation distance directly proportional to the amount of change in a node's geographic position. This paper investigates the dependence of the optimum zone configuration (i.e. number of zones and corresponding radii) on network configuration and node behavior (i.e. mobility), in order to evaluate the protocol's sensitivity to those parameters and provide guidelines for determining the optimal zone configuration for efficient operation of the PSR protocol.

The management strategies and algorithms for large-scale multmedia conferencing over a communication network are presented. A well organized and human friendly multimediaconference management should utilize efficiently and fairly its limited resources as well as take into account the requirements of the conference participants. Several principles for defining and solving resource sharing problems in this context are proposed. The conference resources addressed include the bandwidth, time, and limitations of audio and visual equipment. The participants' requirements for these resources are defined and translated in terms of quality of service requirements and fairness criteria.

In this paper, we propose a data partitioning scheme for content-based retrieval from a multimedia database using a heterogeneous cluster system. The proposed parallel unified model [6] was used to represent multimedia data. All types of multimedia data in the unified model are represented by k-dimensional(k-d) signals. Each dimension of k-d data is separated into small blocks and then Formed into a hierarchical multidimensional tree structure, called a k-tree. The parallel version of k-tree model was introduced in [7]. The previous experimental results show the huge reduction of retrieval time on a cluster of homogeneous workstations. In this paper, we extend our parallel model to a heterogeneous cluster system environment. We demonstrate the experimental results of using a parallel retrieval algorithm Tor the k-tree unified model on a cluster of heterogeneous system connected via a network. We use system characteristics to help in partitioning the data and balancing the loads of the processors. The experiments of the model with load balancing shows a significant reduction of retrieval time while maintaining the quality of perceptual results.

In a wireless environment, due to topology changes and characteristics of media (interference in radio signals) the bandwidth of a link is unpredictable and possibly very low, the error rates are variable and extremely high. Provisioning and guaranteeing quality of service (QoS) in such an environment is a very challenging problem. In this paper we propose an adaptive QoS framework to support multimedia applications in a wireless networking environment. The proposed framework is hierarchical in nature with cluster of mobile end hosts connected to a base station, base stations are connected to a supervisory node, which in turn, is connected to the wired infrastructure. The changing conditions in wireless due to interference and possibly mobility, entitle that the real-time applications needing stringent QoS should be adaptable. The framework uses a generic feedback mechanism to support adaptability at all layers of the wireless network. An overview of existing wireless architectures which support QoS is given. The architectures discussed are WAMIS (wireless adaptive multimedia information system), SWAN (seamless wireless ATM network), MMWN (multimedia support for mobile wireless networks), and QGMC (QoS guarantees in mobile computing). The proposed approach is compared with these existing methods.

The complexity of networks is increasing faster than the skill base required to manage them. On the other hand, rapid deployment of many mission critical application increases the concern of a corporate management for the effectiveness of network management. In real life, complex networks are held together by a small number of experts each of whom understand some aspect of the network. Therefore, there is a strong need for tools and techniques for the optimal utilization of the most valuable resources of a networking organization i.e. the EXPERTS. The increasing shortage of such personnel will lead to a number of a organizations sharing the services of such experts. Hence there is growing need for network management systems for effectively utilizing the skills of these experts. Two major types of such support systems are multimedia and mobile computing systems. This paper discusses CORBA based multimedia support for network management.
