COMIQS develops a complete networked multimedia system based on new standards coming from the Internet IETF, ISO MPEG and Web3D standardization bodies. COMIQS system is based on full MPEG-4 functionalities including video, audio and 3D graphics. networking solution uses MPEG-4 DMIF (Delivery multimedia Integration Framework) and the RTP/RTCP protocols for multimedia data developed by the IETF. COMIQS will integrate media server, network and terminal and will perform technical tests based on two applications in the area of commercial presentations.

We present an international research program for the development and application of multimedia tools to the investigation of cultural heritage. A networking prototype computing system will be produced for the efficient storage and processing of multimedia data referring to works of art and historical documents, including results of chemical and physical analyses and reports about interventions of restoration. Main applications will be concerned with Italian paintings and frescoes from the XVth to XVIIIth century and archives on the Byzantine sea trade in the Mediterranean area.

We propose a scheme to provide interactive functions through active buffer management at the client side for staggered multicast near VOD systems. The scheme uses client side buffering in a novel fashion that relies on the simultaneous availability of "past", "present" and "future" parts of a video and lets the client selectively prefetch segments from multicast channels based on the observation of the play point in its local buffer. The contents of the buffer are adjusted in such a way that the relative position of the play point is kept in the middle part of the buffer and a high probability of providing the interactive functions with the contents of the local buffer is achieved. We perform several simulations and find that the active buffer management is an effective method to provide interactive functions in these systems.

multimedia servers store large amount of media data of different format. Different data objects have different real time requirements. In this paper, we present an empirical study on the performance of disk scheduling in the presence of different media type with different real-time requirements. We also argue that using multiple queues to handle different data types is not the best way to handle objects with different priorities. Moreover we argue that using one queue per disk to organize objects with different real time requirements would be more suitable for multimedia server applications. We built a simulation model based on a real video server, PanaViss, produced by Panasonic. The experiments show that using multiple queues respects the priority hierarchy. However, this schema sometime penalizes utilization of the disk.

The emerging broadband computer networks (wireline and wireless) are likely to make numerous multimedia applications, such as videoconferencing, interactive games, collaborative computing, a standard feature in the desktop PCs and in the portables. In recent years there have been significant development in the field of multimedia coding algorithms and their VLSI implementations along with the development of high speed networking technology (e.g., ATM, FDDI, fast Ethernet). But the end-system architecture (software and hardware) as a whole is lagging behind these advancements. Needed are optimized hardware and software architectures for end systems that will guarantee real-time multimedia applications' predictable performance according to user provided QoS. In this paper, we identify the major end-system hardware and software requirements for networked multimedia applications. Focusing mainly on hardware and operating system levels, we advocate for an integrated end-system architecture rather than some adhoc solutions for real-time multimediacomputing, in addition to general purpose computing in a distributed environment. A core-based system architecture is proposed in this paper. We observe that interfacing with high speed networks, interdevice level data transfer, power efficiency and in addition, system resource utilization are some of the issues that need serious considerations in an end-system architecture.

With increasing competition in the market place and the need for better communication effectiveness, there is a need for the integration of the telephone network, computer telephony (CTI), video conferencing and Internet/intranet network technologies. This paper describes the JilTel system that can be used to implement a new generation of multimedia networks that integrate the telephone network, CTI, video conferencing and the Internet. The system architecture leverages on the rapid advances that are being made in the Internet/intranet, telephone networks, video networks and distributed computing. Each of these three technology areas have their existing areas of strengths. Instead of treating these areas as separate communication islands, the architecture strives for systems that utilize the strengths from the various areas. The resulting solutions show new features and advantages as a result of incorporating technology from different areas.
