Estelle, an internationally standardized Formal Description Technique (FDT), does not have enough expressive power to describe timing behaviours of distributed or multimedia system. To address this limitation, we have developed Time-Estelle, an extended Estelle which is capable of doing so. Past techniques employed for verifying Estelle specifications have not considered time factors and were usually based on a variant or a subset of Estelle and all translating such specifications to another form, such as Finite State Machines or Petri Nets. This paper describes a method of verifying Time-Estelle specification using Communicating Time Petri Nets (CmTPNs).

Currently, many multimedia or continuous media server system is under development on top of either workstations or high-end PCs clustered with high speed networking facilities. In this paper we introduce Crown, a continuous media server on clustered high performance PCs with Myrinet, fast network switching equipment, and then address CrownFS, a file system on top of Crown, to offer continuous media streams to many subscribers at the same time. For easy and rapid tuning of the performance of CrownFS, we prototyped it. Prototyping requires less efforts and costs than direct implementation. Also, more reliable system optimization is obtainable rather than simulation. By using the prototype, we measured the scalability of CrownFS according to disk access strategies.

We propose a novel approach for effectively supporting multimedia packet flows in an Internet environment. The following are the key contributions of the paper: (a) we propose a new transport protocol called HPF that supports multiple interleaved reliable and unreliable data substreams; (b) we decouple the congestion control and reliability mechanisms that are integrated in TCP-this allows us to provide congestion control for unreliable streams as well as reliable streams; and (c) we use priorities within substreams of a packet flow as application defined hints for the link level scheduler to drop packets during congestion. We show through performance measurements in our experimental testbed that our approach can provide effective support for heterogeneous packet flows in the presence of dynamic networking resources.

To keep pace with world-wide integrating trend of telecommunication and broadcasting service, we have developed a DAVIC (Digital Audio-Visual Council) compliant ATM-based VOD (Video On Demand) system. The resources and sessions required to provide video on demand service should be managed so, we have implemented DSM-CC UN (Digital Storage Media Command and Control User-to-Network) protocol. From the DSM-CC UN perspective, an ATM connection is merely one type of resource needed within a video on demand service session, but DSM-CC UN should use Q.2931 protocol to actually create the ATM connection. In this paper, we focus on how DSM-CC UN can be used to manage sessions and resources for video on demand service with Q.293I protocol in the ATM network.

In order to realize multimedia applications such as VOD (Video-on-Demand) on highspeed networks, a client-agent-server video system which provides continuous media data such as audio and video to users has to guarantee suitable QoS (Quality of Service) in accordance with users' requirements, and available computing and network resources during providing media data to users. Therefore the client-agent-server system must include functions which guarantee end-to-end QoS between client and server from the application through network layers. In this paper, we define a Media Coordinate System which has QoS functions, specify QoS negotiation protocols, implement the media coordinate system as a prototyped Video-on-Demand and evaluate its performance.

This paper presents a mobile multimedia applications perspective of a wireless ATM network (WATMnet) which has been developed first as a proof-of-concept prototype, and is now in the process of migration to real-world field trials. The WATMnet system provides mobile terminals (such as laptop PCs and PDAs) the ability to communicate via quality-of-service (QoS) based ATM virtual circuits at bit-rates up to 25 Mbps. We focus on media processing and software techniques used by mobile multimedia terminals in this wireless networking environment for QoS adaptation and media scaling support. Some experimental results are presented.

To apply the low cost mobile PC computers as communication terminal at hospital (TV-phone and EGG-telemetry), basic performance was evaluated. (1) Maximum frame rate for sending was 12 frames/s and throughput was 114K bits/s on mobile PC. (2) The limit of numbers of receiving channels (64 Kbits/sec/channel) was two, at the condition of sending own motion picture. At the receiving only condition, the limit was 3 channels for 128 Kbits/sec/channels. Thus it was suggested that the mobile PC terminals have enough performance for practical use. The simulation for estimation gave the network requirement for multimedia communications at the hospital between the medical staffs and patients on the beds, with the various telemetry images on the ward-scale-LAN. The total network requirement was estimated with our implementation (160/spl times/120 dots/spl times/16 bits/spl times/12 frames/s, 180 Kbits/s) as 925/spl plusmn/152 Kbits/sec. These results suggested that the IEEE802.3 ethernet and the wireless-ethernet have the almost enough performance for practical use. It also suggests the possibilities "patient care at home" under the same conditions at hospitals with medical monitoring and communications over the middle-high speed (1.5-2 Mbits/s) network.

The complexity of networks is increasing faster than the skill base required to manage them. On the other hand, rapid deployment of many mission critical applications increases the concern of a corporate management for the effectiveness of network management. In real life, complex networks are held together by a small number of experts each of whom understands some aspect of the network. Therefore, there is a strong need for tools and techniques for the optimal utilization of the most valuable resources of a networking organization i.e. the experts. The increasing shortage of such personnel will lead to a number of organizations sharing the services of such experts. Hence there is growing need for network management systems for effectively utilizing the skills of these experts. Two major types of such support systems are multimedia and mobile computing systems. This paper discusses CORBA-based multimedia support for network management.

The need for algorithms providing synchronization between audio and video data was driven by the advent of multimedia applications in distributed environments. Numerous algorithms have been proposed, but there is a lack of methodologies to assess these algorithms, to compare them and to determine the algorithm best suited for a given networking and end-system environment and application. In this paper a methodology to assess synchronization algorithms for distributed multimedia applications is presented. The methodology is based on four quality of service (QoS) parameters for synchronization comprising: asynchrony, synchronization error probability, synchronization delays, and buffer requirements. An analytical analysis of these parameters is performed. A key feature of this methodology, is that it parameterizes the network, the end-system, and the application. Thus, it allows for the assessment of any synchronization algorithm independent from the network and end-system. Influences of the infrastructure on synchronization can be determined by the proposed methodology.
