A majority of applications in the near-future are expected to be multimedia-capable. One of the enabling technologies for this to happen is asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) networking. In addition, the exploding use of mobile terminals-laptop computers, personal digital assistants (PDAs) etc.-means there will be more demand to extend these multimedia-capable applications to the mobile terminal. This requires the extension of ATM technology to high-speed wireless communications (>20 Mbps). This is an active area of research around the world. This article describes the technical challenges posed by wireless ATM networking and gives an overview of wireless ATM efforts under way, focusing on specific research projects in the USA and Europe.

What's multimedia? Without a clean answer, industries are running towards the virtual target and looking for business chance. However, we have to recognize that a lot of changes have happened if we look back a year ago. Wireless access systems as well as wired access, WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplex) photonic networking, low power consumption technology, low cost Optical Network Unit (ONU), which are essential in going into the multimedia Era, have indicated us new technological directions. In this talk, emerging device technologies will be reviewed.

Emerging computer network technologies promise to provide distributed multimedia in real-time. Security of real-time video, an important component of distributed multimedia applications, is increasingly becoming one of the major concerns of the computer networking community. This study presents Aegis, a security system for Motion Picture Experts Group (MPEG) compressed video transmissions. Aegis utilizes the concepts of the MPEG video compression algorithm in order to provide an effective and efficient security mechanism. A prototype implementation is used to evaluate its effectiveness in securing video transmissions. Simulation results of Aegis in an asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) technology environment are also presented in order to demonstrate its performance in comparison to traditional encryption/decryption methods.

This paper proposes an ATM-PON based optical access network architecture and relevant transmission technologies for providing multiple services. The motivation of this network is to realize a service platform and to provide multimedia services as well as POTS and ISDN to both businesses and homes. This paper also describes how the PON architecture will contribute to greater network economy, a smooth evolution from the narrow-band optical access network, and downsizing of the optical network unit (ONU). It also shows the configuration, system parameters, features of the system, hardware, and the experimental results. This ATM-PON system is actually working as a service platform for VOD experiments in our laboratory; more than ten types of servers and settop devices are currently connected. This system is to be used for multimedia experiments in a field environment.

This paper seeks to bridge the gap between theory and practice of real-time scheduling in the domain of high speed multimedianetworking. We show that the strict preemptive nature of real-time scheduling leads to more context switching, and requires system calls for concurrency control. We present our scheduling scheme called rate-monotonic with delayed preemption (RMDP) and show how it reduces both these overheads. We then develop the analytical framework to analyze RMDP and other scheduling schemes that lie in the region between strict (immediate) preemption and no preemption. Our idealized scheduler simulation methodology accounts for the blocking introduced by these schemes under the usual assumption that the time for context switching and preemption is zero. We derive simpler schedulability tests for non-preemptive scheduling, and prove a variant of rate-monotonic scheduling that has fewer preemptions. Our measurements on Sparc and Pentium platforms, show that for the workloads we considered, RMDP increases useful utilization by as much as 8%. Thus our scheduling policies have the potential to improve performance over existing methods.

Emerging communication-intensive applications such as multimedia teleconferencing require significant networking resources for efficient operation. In an indoor mobile computing environment, limited wireless resources and user mobility require effective resource reservation algorithms. These requirements demand an efficient advance reservation algorithm in order to minimize handoff call dropping while not compromising the network utilization. This paper proposes a design framework and algorithms for advance resource reservation over the wireless link in indoor cellular wireless LANs. The key insight presented is that different cells in an indoor mobile computing environment behave differently based on location, and need to manage their resources according to their behavior profiles. We present two results: (a) classification of cells and predictive advance reservation based on location and behavior profiles, and (b) state-dependent resource reservation based on statistical information.

The article addresses the emerging technologies for developing network software. As networking technology has made great progress in its speed and connectivity in the past twenty years (1976-96), network software has also evolved and many technologies have been tried and applied to network software development. Formal methods provide model verification, and some sorts of automatic program generation and artificial intelligence open the new arena of intelligent network software. Object oriented technology is coming into practice and enhances the maintainability and reuse of software. Recently, emerging technologies such as distributed objects, mobile agents, Java and network programming will redefine the concept of network software and its development methodology. Commemorating the twentieth COMPSAC, the article summarizes these twenty years' experience and discusses future directions of network software development.

multimedia applications using broadband networking technologies (for example, Asynchronous Transfer Mode) often require services not provided by standard transport layer middleware, such as TCP or TP4. A broadband transport service must provide support for QoS (quality of service) control, multiparty control, synchronization, packet sequence reconstruction, and direct data-link access. Management of a broadband transport service also plays an important role. For example, management information can be used to control parallelism in cases of excessive session delay. This paper introduces the design and management of a transport middleware service suitable for broadband applications. We examine a case study that shows how management information is used to control the transport middleware service and assist in fault and accounting management.

One of the challenges in the design of a distributed multimedia system is to devise suitable specification models for various schemas in different levels of the system. Another important research issue is the integration and synchronization of heterogeneous multimedia objects. In this paper, we present our models for different multimedia schemas and transformation algorithms that transform high-level multimedia objects into schemas that can be used to support the presentation and communication of the multimedia objects.
