One of the key components of a multi-user multimedia-on-demand system is the data server. Digitalization of traditionally analog data such as video and audio, and the feasibility of obtaining network bandwidths above the gigabit-per-second range are two important advances that have made possible the realization, in the near future, of interactive distributed multimedia systems. Secondary-to-main memory I/O technology has not kept pace with advances in networking, main memory and CPU processing power. Consequently, the performance of the server has a direct bearing on the overall performance of such a system. In this paper, we develop a model for the architecture of a server for such a system. Parallelism of data retrieval is achieved by striping the data across multiple disks. The performance of any server ultimately depends on the data access patterns. Two modifications of the basic retrieval algorithm are presented to exploit data access patterns in order to improve system throughput and response time. A complementary information caching optimization is discussed. Finally, we present performance results of these algorithms on the IBM SP1 and Intel Paragon parallel computers.

Packet-switching based video conferencing has emerged as one of the most important multimedia applications. Lip synchronization can be disrupted in the packet network as the result of the network properties: packet delay jitters at the capture end, network delay jitters, packet loss, packet arrived out of sequence, local clock mismatch, and video playback overlay with the graphic system. The synchronization problem become more demanding as the real time and multiparty requirement of the video conferencing application. Some of the above mentioned problem can be solved in the more advanced network architecture as ATM having promised. This paper will present some of the solutions to the problems that can be useful at the end station terminals in the massively deployed packet switching network today. The playback scheme in the end station will consist of two units: compression domain buffer management unit and the pixel domain buffer management unit. The pixel domain buffer management unit is responsible for removing the annoying frame shearing effect in the display. The compression domain buffer management unit is responsible for parsing the incoming packets for identifying the complete data blocks in the compressed data stream which can be decoded independently. The compression domain buffer management unit is also responsible for concealing the effects of clock mismatch, lip synchronization, and packet loss, out of sequence, and network jitters. This scheme can also be applied to the multiparty teleconferencing environment. Some of the schemes presented in this paper have been implemented in the Multiparty multimedia Teleconferencing (MMT) system prototype at the IBM watson research center.

An automatic authoring system for the generation of pictorial transcripts of video programs which are accompanied by closed caption information is presented. A number of key frames, each of which represents the visual information in a segment of the video (i.e., a scene), are selected automatically by performing a content-based sampling of the video program. The textual information is recovered from the closed caption signal and is initially segmented based on its implied temporal relationship with the video segments. The text segmentation boundaries are then adjusted, based on lexical analysis and/or caption control information, to account for synchronization errors due to possible delays in the detection of scene boundaries or the transmission of the caption information. The closed caption text is further refined through linguistic processing for conversion to lower- case with correct capitalization. The key frames and the related text generate a compact multimedia presentation of the contents of the video program which lends itself to efficient storage and transmission. This compact representation can be viewed on a computer screen, or used to generate the input to a commercial text processing package to generate a printed version of the program.

Historically, multimedia Video-on-Demand (VOD) systems have considered stream indexing as an authoring activity, decomposing monolithic streams containing no explicit indexing information. This paper suggests a scheme for 'up-front,' capture-time indexing of digital video streams, whereby the indexing information logically becomes part of the stream. This approach takes advantage of the sequential, temporal nature of capture and the knowledge of the stream recorder to empower further manipulation and playout of the stream. We explore the impact of capture-time indices, and implement a sample format in a Segment Definition File (SDF). The Video Broadcast Authoring Tool (VBAT) is the focus of our paper. Taking a video stream and an SDF as input, VBAT provides a means for authors to create, delete, modify and annotate segments of that stream. VBAT also integrates existing technology such as World-Wide Web's HTTP links and the Motion Picture Parser application. Creation of various-format stills for browsing is supported. VBAT provides for post-processing of the SDF to various playout environments; we implement and describe a postprocessor for World-Wide Web browsing and playout. Finally, we discuss VBAT's position in an integrated digital video broadcast environment and areas of future work.

The rapid deployment of wireless access technology, along with the emergence of high speed integrated service networks, promises to provide users with ubiquitous access to multimedia information in the near future. We are building an experimental testbed system, SWAN (Seamless Wireless ATM Network), to mimic this emerging networking environment. Our wireless access network is organized according to a nanocellular design with base stations serving as a gateway for communication between the wired network and the mobile hosts in a cell. Normally, a mobile host sends and receives traffic through the base station in its current cell. But SWAN also supports direct ephemeral networking between a limited number of cooperating mobile hosts within a small domain. The heart of the testbed is a networking subsystem, FAWN (Flexible Adapter for Wireless networking) that interfaces the standard PCMCIA bus to an RF modem. The FAWN interface is used with a PC or workstation connected to a wired backbone network or a portable device such as a laptop or palmtop computer. In addition, a user interface consisting of an LCD display, audio I/O, and a bar code reader has been built. When interfaced with FAWN this results in a portable wireless multimedia terminal.

The audiovisual library of the future will be based on computerized access to digitized documents. In this communication, we address the user interface issues which will arise from this new situation. One cannot simply transfer an user interface designed for the piece by piece production of some audiovisual presentation and make it a tool for accessing full-length movies in an electronic library. One cannot take a digital sound editing tool and propose it as a means to listen to a musical recording. In our opinion, when computers are used as mediations to existing contents, document representation-based user interfaces are needed. With such user interfaces, a structured visual representation of the document contents is presented to the user, who can then manipulate it to control perception and analysis of these contents. In order to build such manipulable visual representations of audiovisual documents, one needs to automatically extract structural information from the documents contents. In this communication, we describe possible visual interfaces for various temporal media, and we propose methods for the economically feasible large scale processing of documents. computing and networking technologies allow the integration of continuous media data flows to almost every computer system. We particularly focus on the case of the factory and process control plants where audio, animation and video devices will soon take part in the control and the monitoring of manufacturing processes. We propose a MMS-like multimedia application service element (MASE) for the configuration and the management of multimedia devices and continuous media data streams on manufacturing and process control plants. We also propose a novel architecture for real-time distributed systems using a 155.52 Mbit/s ATM network. The system is based on an intelligent communication board integrating a processor and a field programmable gate array component on which MASE and other flexible high level communication functions are implemented. The embedded ATM switch provides high speed communication links inside the workstation. The main advantages of our architecture include: the reduction of the multimedia load imposed on the host processor, the provision of an efficient real-time data service to applications, and the support of the TCP/IP protocol.

multimedia applications handling audio and video data have to obey time characteristics of these media types - for a single stream of multimedia data as well as for the synchronization of related streams. Correctness with respect to time constraints requires mechanisms which lead to favored processing of multimedia operations. CPU scheduling techniques based on the experience from real-time operating systems offer a solution and provide multimedia applications with the ability to meet time-related Quality of Service (QoS) *** presentation starts with an overview on the required Quality of Service for synchronized audio and video streams. Subsequently it describes an implementation of a CPU scheduler designed to run under IBM's AIX. The evaluation of the implementation based on measurements shows that the scheduler is able to support the time requirements of multimedia applications and that such mechanisms are indeed necessary since otherwise deadline violations occur. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1995.

Distribution of computing resources and applications together with the integration of multimedia information in application context radically changed networking technologies and communication protocols. People have thought for long-time that asynchronous packet-switched networks like computer networks could offer only asynchronous communication services so that real-time transmissions would he impossible. Nowadays, experiences with audio and video conference applications across the Internet proved there are yet resources to integrate real-time services. It is not in the scope of this paper to present the technical support of this evolution. These aspects are largely treated in [2, 15, 23]. Our interest is on tailoring such applications to our users needs. During the implementation of an experimental platform, we've focused on specifying the architecture of a communication subsystem able to support two different aspects of exchanging real-time multimedia information in distributed environments:-distant aspect, dealing with real-time transport of multimedia information across heterogeneous networks;-local aspect, dealing with real-time retrieving and presentation on remote multimedia terminals connected to workstations. The platform we've set up is in service for experimental distance lecturing to students in various disciplines in order to discover more detailed aspects of this optimization which are related to the course contents and media utilisation for knowledge representation. © 1995 IEEE.
