Distribution of computing resources and applications together with the integration of multimedia information in application context radically changed networking technologies and communication protocols. People have thought for long-time that asynchronous packet-switched networks like computer networks could offer only asynchronous communication services so that real-time transmissions would he impossible. Nowadays, experiences with audio and video conference applications across the Internet proved there are yet resources to integrate real-time services. It is not in the scope of this paper to present the technical support of this evolution. These aspects are largely treated in [2, 15, 23]. Our interest is on tailoring such applications to our users needs. During the implementation of an experimental platform, we've focused on specifying the architecture of a communication subsystem able to support two different aspects of exchanging real-time multimedia information in distributed environments:-distant aspect, dealing with real-time transport of multimedia information across heterogeneous networks;-local aspect, dealing with real-time retrieving and presentation on remote multimedia terminals connected to workstations. The platform we've set up is in service for experimental distance lecturing to students in various disciplines in order to discover more detailed aspects of this optimization which are related to the course contents and media utilisation for knowledge representation. © 1995 IEEE.

Future interactive television applications are the upcoming front-end to interactive radio, television, video rental, home shopping, multimedia communication, and information retrieval. The challenge of an interactive television system is not that the medium is digital, nor the ability of browsing media resources, nor reception of multiple kinds of media. Users do not need more information than today. The colleague is to provide information which corresponds to users' interests and needs. This paper describes the vision of a multimedia iTV system whose appearance is personally adapted for each user. The concept personal iTV systems is presented by explaining the task of personalization and the technical fundamentals of intelligent assistance.

The rapid deployment of wireless access technology, along with the emergence of high speed integrated service networks, promises to provide users with ubiquitous access to multimedia information in the near future. We are building an experimental testbed system, SWAN (Seamless Wireless ATM Network), to mimic this emerging networking environment. Our wireless access network is organized according to a nanocellular design with base stations serving as a gateway for communication between the wired network and the mobile hosts in a cell. Normally, a mobile host sends and receives traffic through the base station in its current cell. But SWAN also supports direct ephemeral networking between a limited number of cooperating mobile hosts within a small domain. The heart of the testbed is a networking subsystem, FAWN (Flexible Adapter for Wireless networking) that interfaces the standard PCMCIA bus to an RF modem. The FAWN interface is used with a PC or workstation connected to a wired backbone network or a portable device such as a laptop or palmtop computer. In addition, a user interface consisting of an LCD display, audio I/O, and a bar code reader has been built. When interfaced with FAWN this results in a portable wireless multimedia terminal.

Future medical centers will consist of multiple picture archiving and communication systems (PACS) serving local needs of different specialty sections and departments. This distribution of medical image archives will require high performance broadband networks to ensure effective communication and reliable services. One major stumbling block to this distributed PACS environment is the lack of an appropriate networking technology to integrate individual systems and their services seamlessly. Asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) provides a promising solution to this infrastructure problem. ATM is defined as cell-based switching and multiplexing technology designed to be a general-purpose, connection-oriented transfer mode for a wide range of services. This work investigates the suitability of this new technology for distributed medical PACS applications and discusses the user needs and operational issues accompanying the ATM deployment. It also presents with the design and preliminary throughput results of an ATM based hospital-integrated PACS at the University of California, San Francisco.

One of the key components of a multi user multimedia on demand system is the data server. Digitization of traditionally analog data such as video and audio, and the feasibility of obtaining network bandwidths above the gigabit per second range are two important advances that have made possible the realization, in the near future, of interactive distributed multimedia systems. Secondary-to-main memory I/O technology has not kept pace with advances in networking, main memory and CPU processing power. Consequently, the performance of the server has a direct bearing on the overall performance of such a system. We develop a model for the architecture of a server for such a system. Parallelism of data retrieval is achieved by striping the data across multiple disks. The performance of any server ultimately depends on the data access patterns. Two modifications of the basic retrieval algorithm are presented to exploit data access patterns in order to improve system throughput and response time. A complementary information caching optimization is discussed. Finally, we present performance results of these algorithms on the IBM SP1 and Intel Paragon parallel computers.

computing and networking technologies allow the integration of continuous media data flows to almost every computer system. We particularly focus on the case of the factory and process control plants where audio, animation and video devices will soon take part in the control and the monitoring of manufacturing processes. We propose a MMS-like multimedia application service element (MASE) for the configuration and the management of multimedia devices and continuous media data streams on manufacturing and process control plants. We also propose a novel architecture for real-time distributed systems using a 155.52 Mbit/s ATM network. The system is based on an intelligent communication board integrating a processor and a field programmable gate array component on which MASE and other flexible high level communication functions are implemented. The embedded ATM switch provides high speed communication links inside the workstation. The main advantages of our architecture include: the reduction of the multimedia load imposed on the host processor, the provision of an efficient real-time data service to applications, and the support of the TCP/IP protocol.

Advances in networking and storage technologies have made it possible to-build multimedia on-demand servers that provide service similar to those of neighborhood videotape rental stores. In this work, we propose a specialized high-performance programmable multiprocessor. Architecture which allows continuous playback of media-streams to large number of clients, a critical factor in multimedia servers. This architecture supports dynamic phase shifts in media distribution which is particularly useful in a distributed environment. We introduce algorithms for maximum concurrency extraction and to avoid task migration in the presence of dynamically changing demand. We show that our solution performs an order of magnitude better than other known solutions.< >

To fully realize the technology benefits and meet the multimedia service requirements advanced integrated communication system architectures must be developed both in commercial and military environments. This paper addresses the technical challenges such as multiprotocols, standards, and network management issues for integrating terrestrial networks with SATCOM systems. For example, the DISN goal architecture uses the protocols and standards associated with BISDN and ATM network implementations. To achieve truly seamless and scalable network system via a global transmission fabric the protocol standards which require modifications are presented. To support the future highly mobile and dispersed military traffic, a teleport interface for a DISN is discussed. This teleport addresses the future needs of increased throughput and interoperability among mobile users. The multifunctional capabilities of the teleport, e.g., hub function for the hub/spoke networks, gateway, switching and processing, and network control functions are discussed. Performance issues for teleport modeling are identified.

Planning for SuperJANET, a national high performance network to support UK research and higher education, commenced in 1989 and resulted in a four year project to deploy the network starting in March 1993. SuperJANET draws on the experience gained from its predecessor, the JANET network, but there are some major differences in the implementation strategy, technical aspects and applications. This paper describes the concepts behind the project, the plans for the network and the applications it will support.
