Question Answering is a longevous field in computer science, aimed at realizing systems able to answer questions expressed in natural language. However, building Question Answering systems for Italian and able to extract answers from a corpus pertaining a closed domain is still an open research problem. Indeed, extracting clues from a question to generate a query for the information retrieval engine as well as determining the likelihood that a candidate answer is correct are two very thorny tasks. To face these issues, the paper presents a Question Answering pipeline for Italian and based on a corpus of documents pertaining a closed domain. In particular, this pipeline exhibits functionalities for: (i) analyzing natural language questions in Italian by using lexical features;(ii) handling both factoid and description answer types and, depending on them, filtering contextual stop words from questions;(iii) scoring and selecting candidate answers with respect to their type in order to determine the best one. The proposed solution has been subject to an evaluation of its performance using standard metrics, showing promising results. © Springer International Publishing AG 2018.

One important issue that confronts network service providers is the need to provide reliable multimedia data service efficiently over cellular networks for a large number of subscribers under dynamic channel conditions. In long term evolution (LTE) networks, multimedia broadcast multicast service (MBMS) is a bandwidth efficient data service to simultaneously support multiple users at high bandwidth efficiency. In this paper, instead of considering spectrum resource allocation, we investigate MBMS provisioning for each mobile user based on the higher layer robust header compression (ROHC) consideration in response to user channel quality to reduce packet losses. We formulate a profit maximization problem for two different MBMS channel models and further propose a new MBMS assignment scheme for each user to be assigned a target MBMS with optimal ROHC parameters. We further develop a dynamic programming algorithm for user assignment and ROHC parameters optimization to achieve maximal profit with high spectrum resource utility. Our numerical results demonstrate substantial profit gain achieved by the proposed method in LTE systems.

In this paper, we tried to apply the framework of PDE (Personal Data Eco-system), in which data subjects (patients etc.) manage and operate their own data, to the medical field. Specifically, we proposed an agent function that made it possible for patients who were data subjects to easily find desired information from information of other patients.

The nine articles in this special section focus on the use of deep learning program for mobile sensing technologies and applications. Smart devices equipped with a rich set of sensors, such as smartphones and wearables, are enabling an ever-increasing number of mobile applications, ranging from user behavior perception such as gesture recognition and health monitoring to context inference such as driving detection and hazard warning. However, reliably inferring high-value user behavior and context information from noisy and highly heterogeneous sensor data using mobile devices remains an open issue. To combat against the constraints of a mobile device, one conventional approach is to upload raw sensor data to the cloud and run complex inference algorithms remotely. This leads to inefficiency in terms of network overhead and large latency for mobile applications. Recently, deep learning techniques have made significant breakthroughs in achieving state-of-art inference performance in a variety of applications such as computer vision and natural language processing. In general, data modeling challenges found in mobile sensing can often be seen in deep-learningbased inference.

As an extension of Transmission Control Protocol (TCP), Multi-Path Transport Control Protocol (MPTCP) provides a reliable and streaming-oriented transmission service to the upper applications. However, when turning to the real-time multimedia transmission, the repeatedly retransmission of expired segments is unnecessary and inefficient. Thus, we propose a Message-Oriented Partial-Reliability (MO-PR) improvement for MPTCP in this paper. The MO-PR firstly extend the Partially-Reliability transmission scheme to MPTCP which allows the sender to abandon the invalid segment by notifying the receiver. Then, the Message-Oriented retransmission mechanism is designed to improve the discarding efficiency. Finally, the comparison-based simulation results show that MO-PR can effectively improve the transmission performance of multimedia in dynamic wireless networks.

Communication and networking courses, especially wireless communication and networking courses, have become more and more important in many disciplines such as Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, and Computer Engineering. Due to costly hardware needed for communication and networking teaching laboratories, many of these courses are taught without a laboratory. In the rare cases of existing labs, such hardware based teaching labs lack the flexibility to evolve over time and adapt to different environments. Supported by a NSF TUES type II project, we have developed a series of software defined radio (SDR) based mixed signal detection laboratories for enhancing undergraduate communication and networking curricula. In our previous NSF funded CCLI project "Evolvable wireless laboratory design and implementation for enhancing undergraduate wireless engineering education", we have developed and demonstrated the first nationwide example of evolvable SDR based laboratories for three existing undergraduate courses. In this project, we are developing new lab components that can be adopted by multiple courses ranging from freshman year introductory course to senior year capstone design projects. Specifically, in this paper, we report the development of a SDR based mixed radio frequency signal detection platform with a graphical user interface (GUI). This user-friendly GUI will allow students to adjust RF parameters such as carrier frequency, symbol rate, pulse shaping filter, etc., and mix multiple RF signals together. Additionally, students are able to observe the transmitted signal in both time and frequency at both transmitter and receiver. At receiver side, the SDR based platform also provides students the functionality of performing RF signal detection via different detection methods including energy based detection, waveform based detection, and cyclostationary analysis based detection. Application-Level Forward Erasure Correction (AL-FEC) codes have become a key component of communication systems in order to recover from packet losses. This work analyzes the benefits of the AL-FEC codes based on a sliding encoding window (A.K.A. convolutional codes) for the reliable broadcast of real-time flows to a potentially large number of receivers over a constant bit rate channel. It first details the initialization of both sliding window codes and traditional block codes in order to keep the maximum AL-FEC decoding latency below a target latency budget. Then it presents detailed performance analyzes using official 3GPP mobility traces, representative of our use case which involves mobile receivers. This work highlights the major benefits of RLC codes, representative of sliding window codes, that outperform any block code, from Raptor codes (that are part of 3GPP MBMS standard) up to ideal MDS codes, both in terms of reduced added latency and improved robustness. It also demonstrates that our RLC codec features decoding speeds that are an order of magnitude higher than that of Raptor codes.

The Modern pace in hardware technology such as the accessibility of small-scale array sensors, low cost CMOS cameras and microphones has prompted the evolution in the arena of communication (wireless) amidst the network of sensor is equipped with multimedia devices such as Micro Electro-Mechanical Systems (HEMS), To capture the limitations pertaining to sensor nodes (video-based) as well as sensor networks (wireless), a video stream (which supports it) is difficult to be effected keeping the contemporary sensor network protocols into consideration. The present paper exhibits a comprehensive architecture pertaining to video transmission in connection with Wireless multimedia Sensor Network (WMSN) called Energy-efficient and Video transmission Architecture. The inclination towards usage of video-based Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) applications has showed significant gains. Video WSN behaves quite differently from the traditional sensor networks in the sense that it involves a sensing model (directional in nature), an in-node processing which is complex and transfer of large amount of data, thus resulting in frequencies which are high clock and transmission time (radio) which is significant in nature. To ensure reliability of applications, energy consumption reduction is a prime requirement. In this paper, we have come up with a novel energy conservation technique which hinges on Barrier Coverage Preservation rather than Blanket Coverage.

Many recent projects and research activities in the telco sector are adopting the Cloud Computer paradigm consolidating their infrastructures towards converged and all-IP next generation networks providing typical telco services within LTE (and soon 5G) and also fixed network environments, e.g., often still adopting IP multimedia Subsystem (IMS) architecture solutions. In this perspective, cloud computing can significantly lower investment risks by implementing telco services with Virtual Network Functions (VNFs) on top of a Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) Infrastructure. Within this general context, this paper presents the implementation and integration work accomplished within the large EU FP7 Mobile Cloud networking project (MCN, 2013-2016) to achieve costeffective elasticity of IMS-based multimedia applications. The paper shows how it has been designed and implemented an elastic IMS-compliant solution by exploiting the widespread Asterisk server as media gateway. Quality monitoring and scale in/out triggering are obtained through the interaction between the MCN Monitoring as a Service (MaaS) and OpenBaton, i.e., a novel open-source NFV Orchestrator (NFVO) integrated in MCN and fully compliant with the ETSI NFV Management and Orchestration (MANO) specifications. The collected performance results of the proposed solution, demonstrates the fully feasibility of the approach adopted and explained in this paper.

In the big data era, data-intensive applications have growing demand for the capacity of DRAM main memory, but the frequent DRAM refresh, high leakage power, and high unit cost bring serious design issues on scaling up DRAM capacity. To address this issue, a nonvolatile dual inline memory module (NVDIMM), which is a hybrid memory module, becomes a possible alternative to replace the DRAM as main memory in some data-intensive applications. The NVDIMM that consists of a small-sized high-speed DRAM and a large-sized low-cost nonvolatile memory (i.e., flash memory) has the serious performance issue on accessing data stored in the flash memory because of the huge performance gap between the DRAM and the flash memory. However, there is limited room to adopt a complex caching algorithm for using the DRAM as the cache of flash memory in the NVDIMM main memory, because a complex caching algorithm itself would already cause too much performance degradation on handling each request to access the NVDIMM main memory. In this paper, we present a lightweight caching algorithm to boost NVDIMM performance by minimizing the cache management overhead and reducing the frequencies to access flash memory. A series of experiments was conducted based on popular benchmarks, and the results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can effectively improve the performance of the NVDIMM main memory. © 1993-2012 IEEE.
