Packet switched networks have been increasingly used for the transmission of real-time traffic in addition to the traditional best-effort. Although not primarily designed for time critical traffic, industries like professional audio and video, electrical utilities and automation systems, motivated the need for having converged networks that support both time critical as well as best-effort traffic. In this paper a new proposed dynamic Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) protocol, Flexilink, is evaluated for its ability to provide a low latency unified network infrastructure for both real-time traffic as well as traditional best-effort traffic. A simulation model had been developed to evaluate Flexilink performance, however, no research evaluation had been done based on hardware implementation of the protocol. We present a test-bed based study and evaluation for the performance of Flexilink. Test-bed results shows that Flexilink has a better performance compared to other multimedia networking solutions mainly in providing extremely low end-to-end latency and jitter that is well below the audible threshold which makes Flexilink suitable to be used in live multimedia networks.

Network downtime is one of the most widely shared phenomenon within the telecommunications infrastructure. In particular, faults from network equipment have received the most attention. Proactive network monitoring system is presented in this paper to address the earliest symptoms of malfunctioning network equipment. Research focus has been placed on learning the network's behavior as well as on detecting deviations from the MSAN (Multi-Service Access Node) norm at the access layer. Additionally, this paper aims to provide an overview in handling the MSAN equipment, warnings, and implementation of Naïve Bayes classifier. Results demonstrated the throughput performance associated with the equipment activities log. © 2017 IEEE.

Mobile augmented reality (MAR) applications are gaining popularity due to the wide adoption of mobile and especially wearable devices. Such devices often present limited hardware capabilities while MAR applications often rely on computationally intensive computer vision algorithms with extreme latency requirements. To compensate for the lack of computing power, offloading data processing to a distant machine is often desired. However, this process introduces new constrains in the application, especially in terms of latency and bandwidth. If current network infrastructures are not ready for such traffic, we envision that future wireless networks such as 5G will rapidly be saturated by resource hungry MAR applications. Moreover, due to the high variance of wireless networks, MAR applications should not rely only on the evolution of infrastructures. In this article, we analyze MAR applications and justify their need for accessing external infrastructure. After a review of the existing network infrastructures and protocols, we define guidelines for future real-time and multimedia transport protocols, with a focus on MAR offloading.

Undoubtedly, Cloud computing is the ongoing trend that robbed the widespread concern. In fact, it succeeded in discharging users from computational and storage burden to offer them as services following pay-as-you-go principle. The substantial feature of Cloud is the ability to scale up with the rise of users' demands. However, Cloud performance falls into the duty of scaling up to fulfill the user requirements and the dramatically increase in energy consumption dilemma. In order to establish a certain trade-off, server consolidation tries to tackle this challenge by maximizing resources utilization per server in order to minimize the number of active servers. In fact, with the ever-growing demands on cloud services, cloud providers must be able to manage highly fluctuating workloads and avoids SLA violation. In this paper we are concerned by two main levels: Front-end and back-end. The former exhibits the set of users that utilize cloud services and the later is materialized by data centers where the factual load is carry out. It's significant to say that the front-end users are the leading responsible of the workload shape within data centers. We point out this fact in an attempt to further investigate the server workload within real time angle. The main goal of this paper is to formalize the server load according to users' behavior in term of submitted tasks and submission rate and to apply stream mining techniques as an introductory step to build a real time prediction system.

Multi-media applications for use in Precision Agriculture (PA) and Smart Farming (SM) require Network Management Systems to deliver Quality of Service (QoS) end-to-end guarantees. This paper presents the second phase of the research in providing a network management system capable of delivering end-to-end QoS guarantees for Internet of Things (IOT) networks. The first phase of this work used a wireless test bed to develop a propagation model to incorporate the attenuation due to foliage in dense vegetation typically found in PA environments. The output of this propagation model will influence the decision making process in the network management system. Wireless multimedia Sensor Networks (WMSN) operate under the umbrella of the Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) IEEE 802.15.4 Medium Access Control (MAC) and Physical (PHY) protocol to deliver multimedia applications such as voice, video and live streaming. To operate successfully these multi-media applications have high QoS requirements. To enable these QoS requirements to be fulfilled performance metrics such as throughput, end-to-end delay and limited packet loss must be guaranteed. This next phase of the work in developing the intelligent network management system presented in this paper uses an OPNET (TM) simulation package to implement a modified K-Means algorithm to detect the presence of multi-media traffic. Consequently a signal informs the network management system to adopt pre-configured settings via the Personal Area Network Co-ordinator (PANC). The resulting changes implement service differentiation by manipulating the MAC layer (size of the individual GTS timeslots and duty cycle) to deliver better throughput and end-to-end delay performance. OPNET (TM) simulation results show that the new algorithm facilitates better performance and meets QoS requirements suitable to multimedia applications. To address the challenge arising from mobile users' increasing demands for multimedia services, applying content caching in heterogeneous networks (HetNets) is regarded as an effective way to offload traffic and improve the capacity of mobile networks. In this paper, we aim at designing novel content caching strategies in HetNets to offload the network traffic and support users' requests locally. Specifically, based on some practical network constraints (i.e., patterns of user requests, link capacity and heterogeneous cache sizes) and the derived network topology, we propose a low-complexity and practicable distributed collaborative hierarchical caching framework by decomposing the formulated large-scale optimization problem into a series of simpler subproblems. Trace-based simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework.

The ever-increasing traffic demand from social networking service (SNS) users and recent progress in device-to-device (D2D) technology have empowered a new D2D-based SNS paradigm, which enables multimedia content exchange via short-range wireless networking. In this paradigm, a small node failure may trigger a collection of rapidly-spreading isolation events called cascade-of-failures. Unlike existing works that studied the outcome of cascading failures from the spatial and probabilistic perspectives, this paper sheds light on the temporal properties of the cascade-of-failures. To do this, we introduce a maximum isolation time that quantifies the steps needed until the last node is isolated by the cascades, and then show that it scales non-monotonically to the fraction of initial survivors (non-failure nodes) and increases logarithmically with the network size. Then, we use the result to further analyze a node resilience metric, which is the likelihood that a node does not become isolated before its social networking session is finished. These findings, which are validated using numerical simulations, provide a temporal perspective of network performance that is valuable in the design of D2D-based SNSs yet still missing in the literature.

The tremendously rapid popularization of smart phones has significantly impacted our daily lives. Gait velocity has been considered the sixth vital sign. It can not only be used to estimate the survival rate of the elderly but also to predict the tendency of falling. Unfortunately, gait velocity is required to be measured using specially designed walk path with minimal walk distance, which has to be conducted at clinics or health institutes. Wearable tracking services using accelerometer or inertial measurement unit can measure the velocity for certain time interval but not all the time due to lack of sustainable energy source. To tackle the shortcoming of wearable sensors, this work develops the framework to measure gait velocity using distributed tracking services deployed indoor. Given the numerous errors caused by remote sensing, the framework takes into account the temporal and spatial relationship among tracking services to calibrate the tracking services systematically. Consequently, the gait velocity can be measured without wearable sensors and at higher accuracy.
