Self-organizing Mobile Ad-hoc Networks (MANETs) based on Delay Tolerant networking (DTN), are powerful tools for maintaining or reestablishing telecommunications following disasters and other infrastructure disrupting events. However, such networks typically have very limited bandwidth compared with infrastructure-based networks, with the practical effect that they cannot satisfy every demand placed upon them. Thus, if the most critical traffic is to be delivered, and in a timely manner, some form of filtering or prioritization is needed. This paper sets out an architecture for solving this problem, and presents supporting simulation and field results. The architecture is built using the input of several emergency and disaster response organizations, to ensure that the key services required by citizens post-disaster were incorporated. Reflecting the dynamic nature of post-disaster communications needs, as identified in the survey, the architecture provides a framework in which arbitrary prioritization policies can be defined, and redefined, so that the humanitarian utility of a network can be maximized according to the prevailing situation and requirements. A proof-of-concept implementation is presented, yielding orders of magnitude reduction in message delivery latency in both simulation and in a field trial of an existing disaster communications system.

With the advance of wireless technologies, the rapid mobile data traffic growth will lead to severe network resource consumption and exceptionally long latency to access services, especially for cloud-based applications. To tackle these issues, Fog Radio Access Network (F-RAN) is recently emerged for next generation cellular networks. F-RAN is considered as an extension of the cloud computing paradigm to the edge of the network and a highly virtualized platform that provides computing, storage, and network services for mobile devices. However, how to appropriately place virtual machines (VMs) into fog nodes in F-RAN systems is very challenging, and will significantly affect the bandwidth consumption of backhaul links. Thus this paper studies the replication-based VM placement problem, and aims at minimizing the total backhaul traffic generated by VM migrations and data transmissions. We observe that the VM placement operation should not be frequently executed and practically considers the problem in a long term aspect. Then we propose a heuristic algorithm to solve the problem. The simulation results agree our observation and show that compared with a greedy approach and an optimal algorithm, the proposed algorithm demonstrates with favorable results for the overall backhaul network usage.

To deal with the severe challenge from explosively increasing mobile users' multimedia service requests in mobile networks, introducing cloud-based computing platform and content caching into radio access networks (RANs) has become an effective emerging technique. In this paper, we propose a collaborative hierarchical caching framework in cloud RANs (C-RANs), which minimizes the access delay of content delivery under certain specific network constraints to improve users' Quality of Service (QoS) as well as offload network traffic. Specifically, based on the formed hierarchical caching topology consisting of two tiers of content caching at the base stations and the cloud central unit (CCU), we decompose the formulated large-scale optimization problem into a series of simpler subproblems, and then propose the corresponding low-complexity distributed heuristic solutions as well as a content request routing scheme. Trace-based evaluation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework.

Gait velocity has become a valid and important metric for senior populations. However, existing approaches to measure gait velocity are either limited to specific location or too expensive to be applied. IoT middleware allows the systems to collect data in a large space in a collaborative manner. However, it is a great challenge of integrating large numbers of low-cost devices to accomplish the task. This paper presents the design, implementation, and findings of using low-cost thermal sensors to monitor the activity index in home environment. The system is built on top of WuKong middleware. The evaluation results show that the system can measure the gait velocity with negligible errors. When the parameters for noise filtering are correctly configured, the F-Score of the heat source detection can achieve 0.99. © 2017 Association for computing Machinery.

Imprecise computation can enhance the responsiveness of computing systems but is rarely applied to embedded real-time systems due to its dynamic computation requirements. With the increasing needs of using image processing for multi-mode safety critical systems, it becomes desired on applying imprecise computation on such systems. In this paper, we extended the traditional schedulability analysis mechanisms on mode change to preemptive multi-core systems for imprecise computation so as to assure that there is no deadline miss between mode changes. The proposed method computes the mode change offset to delay the new mode up to a limit and assure that there is no deadline miss. To evaluate the schedulability of the proposed algorithms, we compare our approach with other works by simulation. The result shows that our analysis can increase schedulability by 15% to 30%, compared to the approach proposed by Lee and Shin in 2013. Moreover, the proposed approach increases the number of completed tasks during mode change up to 40%. © 2017 Association for computing Machinery.

Auto-scaling is a technique that allocates resources according to dynamic workload. This paper focuses on autoscaling with heterogeneous container configurations. The goal is to minimize the cost of container adjustments, and to reduce the resource insufficiency penalty, while maintaining high resource utilization. It is extremely difficult to achieve the minimal cost without knowing the future workloads in advance. Thus, we first propose an optimal dynamic programming algorithm that can scale optimally when given the future workload. This optimal solution is used as the baseline to evaluate other algorithms that do not have the future workload information. Then, we propose two greedy algorithms that do not need workload information in advance, and a heuristic algorithm that first predicts the workload of the next time step using Gradient Boosting Regression, then makes scaling decisions using the optimal dynamic programming algorithm. We evaluate these four algorithms with two realistic workload traces. The experiments show that when the cost to start new servers is much higher than resource insufficiency penalty, our short-term prediction approach will only increase the total cost by only 9.6%, and decrease the utilization by only 10%, when compared with the optimal dynamic programming that knows the future workload.

To deal with explosively growing demands for multimedia contents from mobile users, content caching in base stations has been considered as an effective solution to improve the network performance by, e.g., offloading network traffic and improving users' Quality of Service (QoS). Moreover, the proactive caching policy in a cache-enabled system needs to be optimized taking into account of content delivery by wireless transmissions. Thus, in this paper, we investigate and propose an efficient resource allocation scheme for min-rate guaranteed content delivery in the downlink multiuser cache-enabled orthogonal frequency division multiple access small cell networks (OFDMA-SCNs). Our aim is to maximize the weighted sum of data rates in an OFDMA-SCN based on the constraints of the caching method, users' QoS, subcarrier reuse and small base stations' transmit power. We employ the alternating direction multiplier method to decompose the formulated complex nonconvex optimization problem into a series of simpler subproblems for which optimal solutions can be easily obtained, and propose corresponding low-complexity methods to solve the subproblems and then the whole problem. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed resource allocation scheme.

The Role of Cloud computing in Content-Centric Mobile networking

Due to the ever growing popularity of smart handheld devices, the demand for multimedia services has had an upsurge in mobile networks over the past several years, and traditional mobile networking is turning into a content-centric mobile networking (CCMN). To maintain high quality of service for multimedia services, especially video services, caching is regarded as one of the most effective techniques. In this article, we first examine the limitations of caching techniques in conventional CCMN, including the core network and RAN. Then, by leveraging cloud computing into both core network and RAN caching, a cloud CCMN architecture is discussed, which overcomes the limitations of conventional CCMN architecture. Specifically, we elaborate on a cloud content delivery network in the core network and cloud RAN with caching as a service on the RAN side. Furthermore, we review the main problems that have been studied under cloud CCMN architecture. Recent results show that cloud CCMN is a promising architecture to serve the foreseen multimedia traffic. Lastly, we conclude this article by presenting some open challenges in cloud CCMN.

Traditional linear TV is decreasing in popularity and the broadcast industry has identified the need to change communication with their audience as a way to counteract on this. Especially younger generations are using social media twenty-four-seven and would like to continue doing so while watching TV. The VisualMedia project accepts this challenge by enriching the TV experience with elements and information from social media in real-time during live broadcasts. It enables broadcasters to select and distribute posts and stats from various social media sources in a fast and reliable way. With the help of VisualMedia, posts and stats can be shown within live programs using enhanced graphical representations or on the second screen, with minimal latency. The goal of the project is to deliver a framework that combines all necessary steps from retrieving posts to delivering them into a live TV show. This gives broadcasters the opportunity to react fast on their audiences, and facilitates audiences to interact with their broadcaster. © 2017 Association for computing Machinery.
