Traditional linear TV is decreasing in popularity and the broadcast industry has identified the need to change communication with their audience as a way to counteract on this. Especially younger generations are using social media twenty-four-seven and would like to continue doing so while watching TV. The VisualMedia project accepts this challenge by enriching the TV experience with elements and information from social media in real-time during live broadcasts. It enables broadcasters to select and distribute posts and stats from various social media sources in a fast and reliable way. With the help of VisualMedia, posts and stats can be shown within live programs using enhanced graphical representations or on the second screen, with minimal latency. The goal of the project is to deliver a framework that combines all necessary steps from retrieving posts to delivering them into a live TV show. This gives broadcasters the opportunity to react fast on their audiences, and facilitates audiences to interact with their broadcaster. © 2017 Association for computing Machinery.

As mobile devices become more capable, the need for customization of mobile services becomes increasingly important for users. Nowadays, mobile device sensors are able to collect information from users throughout the day, which gives insight into their profiles. The advent of modern System-on-Chip architectures has enabled mobile devices to tackle machine learning-oriented problems heretofore reserved to desktop computers. The recent success of deep learning makes it a method of choice for understanding the complex user patterns on mobile devices. Unfortunately, training a deep neural network is often considered as too computationally intensive on mobile devices. To address this issue, we consider transfer learning, a technique that aims to take advantage of deep learning features that have been previously learned to improve the learning performance of another neural network. In this paper, we propose a deep learning framework TransferCL, that supports transfer learning on mobile devices. Our approach relies on the collaboration of the multicore CPU and the integrated GPU to accelerate deep learning computation on mobile devices. We consider three major issues - performance/portability tradeoff, power efficiency, and memory management, propose our approaches, and conduct experiments to evaluate them.

Writing is challenging, especially for non-native speakers. To support English as a Second Language (ESL) writing, we propose StructFeed, which allows native speakers to annotate topic sentence and relevant keywords in texts and generate writing hints based on the principle of paragraph unity. First, we compared our crowd-based method with three naïve machine learning (ML) methods and got the best performance on the identification of topic sentence and irrelevant sentence in the article. Next, we evaluated the StructFeed system with two feedback-generation mechanisms including feedback generated by one expert and by one crowd worker. The results showed that people who received feedback by Struct- Feed got the highest improvement after revision. Copyright © 2017, Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (***). Web technology is ubiquitous in modern life, enabling various forms of communication in real time between the users and computers, as well as between network devices, by means of artificial (markup) languages and cascading style sheets (CSS). multimedia packages implemented in the WWW can also further expand the user groups to include, for example, the amblyopic or the hearing-impaired. According to Microsoft, Web technology also encompasses Web servers and programming languages for building Web applications. But such a breathtaking development that meets dynamically changing new emerging networking standards demands a large-scale infrastructure that will enable us to access digital information in its every form, whatever its purpose. This book presents 20 papers and 3 keynote speeches from the 8th International conference on Applications of Digital Information and Web Technologies (ICADIWT 2017), held at the Universidad Autnoma de Ciudad Jurez, Jurez City, Chihuahua, Mexico, in March 2017. Over the years, the ICADIWT conference has created its own research community of participants from many countries, who attend the event each year to demonstrate and discuss their research findings. The community is growing every year. The scope of the ICADIWT 2017 conference covers a wide range of research areas, and the papers in the book are divided into 7 subject areas: pattern recognition; distributed computing; mobile technologies; digital technologies for aerospace; medical systems applications; system engineering; and control systems.

Network downtime is one of the most widely shared phenomenon within the telecommunications infrastructure. In particular, faults from network equipment have received the most attention. Proactive network monitoring system is presented in this paper to address the earliest symptoms of malfunctioning network equipment. Research focus has been placed on learning the network's behavior as well as on detecting deviations from the MSAN (Multi-Service Access Node) norm at the access layer. Additionally, this paper aims to provide an overview in handling the MSAN equipment, warnings, and implementation of Naïve Bayes classifier. Results demonstrated the throughput performance associated with the equipment activities log.

With the explosive growth of Mobile Internet applications, the massive amount of data traffic produced by the data applications, such as mobile multimedia services, will bring big challenge to the next generation (5G) mobile communication networks. Recently, hierarchical cloud service networks have been proposed to address this big challenge. By introducing distributed hierarchical cloud network architecture, mobile users can enjoy efficient high-quality and low-delay local services. However, with the limited resources in the hierarchical cloud networks, it is essential to develop efficient resource scheduling and content delivery mechanisms. In this paper, we investigate the resource allocation for hierarchical cloud networks. We propose a Joint Resource Allocation (JRA) scheme, aiming at improving resource utilization, as well as reducing the content access delay to improve user Quality of Experience (QoE). Our fundamental idea is to jointly allocate spectrum and energy resources in wireless networks, caching and processing resources in Cloudlets, to maximize overall system resource utilization. We conduct simulation experiments to validate the effectiveness of our proposed JRA scheme. Numerical results show that the performance of JRA in terms of content access delay and resource utilization can be significantly improved compared with traditional schemes.

Software-defined networking (SDN) are the rising technology in near future to build programmable networks as a way to simplify the evolution of networks. It is a new networking paradigm with the main aim is to decouple forwarding hardware from control decisions. Several SDN architectures have been recently proposed and evaluated. Performance evaluation of these architectures, to study their scalability, was mainly performed using either simulations or experiments. Generally, experimenting with a real system is ex-pensive or impossible. Simulations are extremely slow especially for large systems and provide little insight on how different design parameters affect the actual performance. Therefore, modeling is more effective for evaluating and optimizing SDN architectures prior their implementation. In this paper, we used Network Calculus to study two typical SDN control plane structures, including centralized, hierarchical with 2level. The model describes the behavior of switches and controllers and allows extracting some performance metrics, mainly the delay and backlog.

As an advanced transportation mode of people's traveling, air transport meets many passengers' spiritual pursuits and decreases their time management costs. In long-range flights, passengers who have similar interests can set up social circles to make the journey more enjoyable. However, it is a challenge to predict passengers that may have good opinions towards each other and assign neighboring seats for them intelligently. Normally, the analysis that is targeting at passengers' personal information and social networking data may be one-sided to some extent. From the perspective of airliners, the work station gathers and analyzes the contents and operating habits of passengers on multimedia devices in cabins, sets up a model for passenger's individuality and hobbies, and discusses the possibility of assigning seats intelligently through such information. Preliminary research results show that the hypothesis has a solid foundation.

Many IoT applications require public information and private information to make correct decision and trigger appropriate services in efficient manner. Many existing IoT services use cloud-based service model. Cloud-based service model conducts logic decision on remote servers, which store public and private information, and leads to security and privacy breakage. Moreover, it limits the users on controlling the services. The tradeoff between data privacy and intelligent service is an important issue on developing IoT services. In this paper, we present a public/private federation framework, which combines public and private intelligence to develop IoT applications. It allows the IoT applications to take advantage of the cloud-based public intelligence and local private data to provide correct services without transmitting private data to public servers. The framework is built on top of an intelligent virtual middleware, named WuKong, to federate with nodeRED, which is a web-enabled flow-based programming environment. Two case examples are shown in the paper to demonstrate how the private and public intelligence are inter-woven to compose intelligent IoT applications.

Content Delivery Networks (CDN) interconnect several surrogate a.k.a replica servers that use geographical proximity as a criteria for delivering multimedia content. The delivered content may be enriched by value-added video services (e.g. in-stream video advertisements). The purpose of this demo is to show the prototype we developed in order to enable a cost-efficient and agile provisioning of value-added video services in CDNs. The prototype implements our NFV and SDN-based architecture. The application-level middleboxes that enable value-added video services (e.g. mixer, compressor) are provisioned as Virtual Network Functions (VNFs) and chained using application-level SDN switches. On one hand, we will highlight how value-added video applications can be provisioned in CDN domain. On the other hand, we will show concretely the advantages and overheads of the application-level service function chaining.
