Large popular events are nowadays well reflected in social media fora (e.g. Twitter), where people discuss their interest in participating in the events. In this paper we propose to exploit the content of non-geotagged posts in social media to build machine-learned classifiers able to infer users’ attendance of large events in three temporal periods: before, during and after an event. The categories of features used to train the classifier reflect four different dimensions of social media: textual, temporal, social, and multimedia content. We detail the approach followed to design the feature space and report on experiments conducted on two large music festivals in the UK, namely the VFestival and Creamfields events. Our attendance classifier attains very high accuracy with the highest result observed for the Creamfields dataset ?87% accuracy to classify users that will participate in the event. © 2017 Association for computing Machinery.

multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service (MBMS)(1) is an efficiency cellular strategy for shared content delivery, widely popular in Long Term Evolution (LTE) networks. Typical multimedia IP packets possess redundantly large headers, relying on Robust Header Compression (ROHC) for efficiency boost. This work investigates the adaptation of ROHC schemes for MBMS. We formulate and solve the optimization problem of transmission efficiency maximization in point-to-multipoint (P-t-M) transmission mode. Based on this solution, we propose a new MBMS scheme, namely point-to-multigroup (P-t-MG) transmission in which MBMS aim user groups. We provide a grouping and parameter optimization algorithm for P-t-MG to achieve high efficiency under total radio resource constraints. Numerical results demonstrate the advantage of the optimized P-t-M and the P-t-MG schemes over conventional MBMS.

Many recent projects and research activities in the telco sector are adopting the Cloud Computer paradigm consolidating their infrastructures towards converged and all-IP next generation networks providing typical telco services within LTE (and soon 5G) and also fixed network environments, e.g., often still adopting IP multimedia Subsystem (IMS) architecture solutions. In this perspective, cloud computing can significantly lower investment risks by implementing telco services with Virtual Network Functions (VNFs) on top of a Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) Infrastructure. Within this general context, this paper presents the implementation and integration work accomplished within the large EU FP7 Mobile Cloud networking project (MCN, 2013-2016) to achieve cost-effective elasticity of IMS-based multimedia applications. The paper shows how it has been designed and implemented an elastic IMS-compliant solution by exploiting the widespread Asterisk server as media gateway. Quality monitoring and scale in/out triggering are obtained through the interaction between the MCN Monitoring as a Service (MaaS) and OpenBaton, i.e., a novel open-source NFV Orchestrator (NFVO) integrated in MCN and fully compliant with the ETSI NFV Management and Orchestration (MANO) specifications. The collected performance results of the proposed solution, demonstrates the fully feasibility of the approach adopted and explained in this paper.

With the rapid development of Internet technology, a new architecture named Content-Centric networking (CCN) has emerged recently. With powerful abilities of data caching and multicast, it has been increasingly popular especially for multimedia applications. However, service markup, in-network caching and routing are not inherently addressed in CCN. In this paper, we make an attempt at filling this gap by designing an ontology-based semantic service markup for CCN. Two components which are Service Identifier (SID) and Service Behavior Description (SBD) are presented in order to decouple the service entity with its original physical location, making it possible for service discovery and caching in CCN environments. Detailed designs are introduced, and a case study of an online multimedia conference system is presented to validate the effectiveness of our approach.

Network downtime is one of the most widely shared phenomenon within the telecommunications infrastructure. In particular, faults from network equipment have received the most attention. Proactive network monitoring system is presented in this paper to address the earliest symptoms of malfunctioning network equipment. Research focus has been placed on learning the network's behavior as well as on detecting deviations from the MSAN(Multi-Service Access Node) norm at the access layer. Additionally, this paper aims to provide an overview in handling the MSAN equipment, warnings, and implementation of Na?ve Bayes classifier. Results demonstrated the throughput performance associated with the equipment activities log.

With the increase in popularity of Internet of Things (IoT), pervasive computing, healthcare services, sensor networks, and mobile devices, a lot of data is being generated at the perception layer. Cloud is the most viable solution for data storage, processing, and management. Cloud also helps in the creation of further services, refined according to the context and requirement. However, being reachable through the Internet, cloud is not efficient enough for latency sensitive multimedia services and other time-sensitive services, like emergency and healthcare. Fog, an extended cloud lying within the proximity of underlying nodes, can mitigate the issues traditional cloud cannot solve being standalone. Fog can provide quick response to the requiring applications. Moreover, it can preprocess and filter data according to the requirements. Trimmed data is then sent to the cloud for further analysis and enhanced service provisioning. However, how much better is it to have a fog in any particular scenario instead of a standalone cloud working without fog is a question right now. In this paper, we provide an answer by analyzing both cloud-only and cloud-fog scenarios in the context of processing delay and power consumption according to increasing number of users, on the basis of varying server load. The simulation is done through Discrete Event System Specification (DEVS). Simulation results demonstrate that by the use of fog networks, users experienced lower waiting times and increased data rates.

The 4G standard Long Term Evolution-Advanced (LTE-A) has been deployed in many countries. Now, technology is evolving towards the 5G standard since it is expecting to start its service in 2020. The 5G cellular networks will mainly contain in cloud computing and primarily Quality of Service (QoS) parameters (e.g. delay, loss rate, etc.) influence the cloud network performance. The impact of user perceived Quality of Experience (QoE) using multimedia services, and application significantly relies on the QoS parameters. The key challenge of 5G technology is to reduce the delay less than one millisecond. In this paper, we have described a method that minimizes the overall network delay for multimedia services;which are constant bit rate (VoIP) and variable bit rate (video) traffic model. We also proposed a method that measures the user's QoE for video streaming traffic using the network QoS parameters, i.e. delay and packet loss rate. The performance of proposed QoE method is compared with QoV method, and our proposed QoE method performs best by carefully handle the impact of QoS parameters. The results show that our described method successfully reduces the overall network delays, which result to maximize the user's QoE.

Cloud computing platform has gained popularity among service providers and consumers to perform business operations due to the ease of communication and transaction convenience in terms of accessibility and availability. However, due to the vulnerability of this dynamic open environment, it is crucial to have a binding agreement between all the service parties for ensuring trust while fulfilling the expected Quality of Services (QoS). There is a need to improve on the current Service Level Agreements (SLAB) practice which does not focus on the QoS and accountability assurance. In this paper, we propose an adaptive monitoring framework to dynamically monitor QoS metrics and pertbrmance measures to verify compliances to the respective SLAB. The framework is validated with scenarios on response time and availability which shown to provide adaptive remedy action to rectify violation situation. Besides, any service party which establishes non-compliance to SLAB shall be penalized in monetary terms.

The heavy multimedia traffic produced by mobile users poses great challenges for the mobile network operators, especially in the areas with large user densities but limited cellular network capacities (e.g. India). Recently, many studies demonstrate that exploiting the device-to- device(D2D) content sharing in offline Mobile Social Networks is a promising solution to cellular data offloading. However, such approaches are based on either unrealistic assumptions, or limited data analytics caused by small data size (e.g. hundreds of MSN users) or single-dimensional feature (e.g. human mobility only), which severely restricts their applications in practice. To address this issue, this paper performs the first large-scale data measurement and multi-feature analytics of D2D content sharing. Specifically, by using Apache Spark over a 20-server cluster, we analyze the behaviors of 30 million users (with 40 billion D2D transmissions and 16 million content files) of Xender, a leading global D2D sharing platform. Several important features are studied, including performance basics, content properties, location relations, meeting dynamics, and social characteristics. Furthermore, as a proof-of-concept study of our analytics, we also develop a multi-feature learning based framework, which demonstrates the large potentials of predicting and recommending D2D sharing activities using machine learning methods.

Cloud bursting temporarily expands the capacity of cloud-based service hosted in a private data center by renting public data center capacity when the demand for capacity spikes. This paper presents a cloud bursting approach based on longand short-term predictions of requests to a business-critical web system to determine the optimal resources of the system deployed over private and public data centers. In a private data center, a dedicated pool of virtual machines (VMs) is assigned to the web system on the basis of one-week predictions. Moreover, in both private and public data centers, VMs are activated on the basis of one-hour predictions. We formulated a problem that includes the total cost and response time constraints and conducted numerical simulations. The results indicate that our approach is tolerant of prediction errors. Even if the website receives bursty requests and one-hour predictions include a mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) of 0.2, the total cost decreases to a half the current cost while 95% of response time is kept below 0.15 s.
