Green computing has become one of the hottest trends in recent years. In this research area, the major purpose is to reduce the energy consumption as well as the CO2 emission. Obviously, this topic has been the important issue in the field of electronic and computer engineering. In fact, energy factor might be considered to be a significant cost when running any computing system. Basically, energy savings can be obtained in many parts of the system including memory, peripheral devices, hard disk drive and processor. In processor or CPU level, there is a number of solutions to handle the power consumption. However, most of them based on reactive model which engages the thresholds. Obviously, these techniques are not accuracy and limited to save the power. In this research, a proactive solution based on prediction technique is proposed. Firstly, the utilization of each core of processor is anticipated by using Gaussian process regression. Subsequently, a migration mechanism can be used to migrate the system-level processes between these cores. Finally, the idle cores can be turned off to save the power while still maintaining an acceptable performance. © 2016 IEEE.

Cloud computing is the long envisaged vision of computing as a utility. Innovative advances in hardware, networking, middleware, and virtual machine technologies have led to an emergence of new, globally distributed computing platforms, namely cloud computing. Cloud computing provides computation facilities and storage as services accessible from anywhere via the Internet without investing in new infrastructure, training, or software licensing. In other words, Cloud computing is a way to increase the capacity or add capabilities dynamically. The main advantage of Cloud computing is that users only utilize what they require and only pay for what they really use. With an exponential growth of the mobile applications and evolution of cloud computing concept, Mobile Cloud computing (MCC) has been presented as a potential technology for mobile services. MCC incorporates the cloud computing into the mobile environment. Mobile Cloud computing refers to an infrastructure where data processing and storage can happen away from mobile device. Mobile Cloud computing (MCC) has transformed the way in which mobile users across the globe leverage services on the go. The obstacles related to performance (e. g. battery life, storage, and bandwidth), environment (e. g. heterogeneity, scalability, availability) and security (e. g. reliability and privacy) are overcome by integrating cloud computing into the mobile environment using MCC. Mobile cloud is a service model, where a mobile device can use the cloud for information storage, searching, data mining and multimedia processing. Cloud computing technology also brings forth many new challenges for data security and access control when users store sensitive data on cloud servers. Streaming processing is an important technology that finds applications in networking, multimedia, signal processing, etc. However, it is very challenging to design and implement streaming applications as they impose complex constraints. First, the tasks involved in the streaming applications must complete the computation under a latency constraint. Second, streaming systems are built under more and more stringent power budget. Hence, power capping technique is employed to manage the power consumption for streaming systems. To accommodate these needs, heterogeneous systems that consist of CPUs and FPGAs are becoming increasingly popular due to their performance and power benefits. In this paper, we optimize the throughput for streaming applications on CPU-FPGA heterogeneous system under latency and power constraints. We develop two algorithms to map the tasks onto the heterogeneous system and order their execution by exploiting the heterogeneity in architectural capabilities and task characteristics. We also employ pipelining to improve the throughput by overlapping the execution of different frames and use frequency scaling to adjust the execution of tasks for power saving. Experiments using a variety of streaming applications show that our heterogeneous solution can successfully meet the latency and power constraints for the cases where the CPU implementation fails. Furthermore, our technique can improve the throughput by 37.32% on average.

Content distribution, especially the distribution of video content, unavoidably consumes bandwidth resources heavily. Internet content providers invest heavily in purchasing content distribution network (CDN) services. By deploying tens of thousands of edge servers close to end users, CDN companies are able to distribute content efficiently and effectively, but at considerable cost. Thus, it is of great importance to develop a new system that distributes content at a lower cost but comparable service quality. In lieu of expensive CDN systems, we implement a crowdsourcing-based content distribution system, Thunder Crystal, by renting bandwidth for content upload/download and storage for content cache from agents. This is a large-scale system with tens of thousands of agents, whose resources significantly amplify Thunder Crystal's content distribution capacity. The involved agents are either from ordinary Internet users or enterprises. Monetary rewards are paid to agents based on their upload traffic so as to motivate them to keep contributing resources. As far as we know, this is a novel system that has not been studied or implemented before. This article introduces the design principles and implementation details before presenting the measurement study. In summary, with the help of agent devices, Thunder Crystal is able to reduce the content distribution cost by one half and amplify the content distribution capacity by 11 to 15 times.

Inequality of communicative capabilities, such as proficiency in a language, could be an awkward experience in real life. However, it could be a good mechanic to make games more challenging and interesting. Charades [2] is a good example, where one player tries to express a word via body language, and the other tries to guess it. We have designed Human and Dog, in which 2 players, a human and a dog, have their unique capabilities to acquire clues and cooperate to solve a series of puzzles. © 2016 Authors.

With advances in wireless technology and the increase in popularity of mobile devices, more and more people now rely on mobile devices for multimedia services (such as video streaming and video calls). A mobile device can be connected and roamed to different networks in heterogeneous wireless networks. The Media Independent Handover (MIH) framework is designed by the IEEE 802.21 group to support seamless vertical handover between different networks. However, how to select an appropriate network from available ones and when to execute the handover remain the key challenges in MIH. This paper proposes a user-centric QoE-driven vertical handover (VHO) framework, based on MIH, which aims to maintain acceptable QoE of different mobile application services and to select an appropriate network based on users' preferences (e.g. on cost). Further a user-centric QoE-driven algorithm is implemented in the proposed framework. Its performance is evaluated and compared with two other VHO algorithms based on Network Simulator 2 (NS2) for video streaming services over heterogeneous networks. The preliminary results show that the proposed algorithm can maintain better QoE and at the same time, take into account user's preference on cost when compared with the other two algorithms. © 2016 IEEE.

There are many cues that can be used to curate media from social networking websites. Beyond metadata, group behavior provide a strong community-based signal for surfacing images, which we show in a user-defined curatorial task. In a departure from mirco-task crowdwork, we observe that the curation inherent in online photo communities guides the discoverability and consumption of the media, which in turn provides a strong signal that can be used in new editorial tasks in a community-supervised manner. We use this approach in tandem with other more conventional multimedia methods (i.e. computer vision and contextual metadata) to form a broad multimodal approach to retrieval and recommendation. We present a large-scale system implementation on a real-world curative task for weather images on a web-scale dataset. Finally, we conduct an evaluation of this system using professional editors and find substantial improvements in editorial efficiency.

We present and evaluate a procedure that exploits throughput prediction to select the DASH video quality sequence (sequence of representations) with the highest average bit rate and the fewest quality switches, while explicitly taking into account throughput and time uncertainty. Experiments with an Android implementation of the proposed procedure show that it can exploit throughput prediction to achieve a high QoE (Quality of Experience) with a small number of video pauses and video quality switches, even when the throughput and time uncertainty is large. © 2016 ACM.
