As a critical technique to support the multimedia services, the statistical quality-of-service (QoS) technique has been proved to be effective in statistically guaranteeing delay-bounded video transmissions over the time-varying wireless channels. On the other hand, since both the natural acoustic systems and artificial acoustic systems use the acoustic channels, the spectrum resource is severely limited in underwater wireless networks. Researchers have proposed the underwater cognitive acoustic network (UCAN) to achieve the environment-friendly and spectrum-efficient transmissions over acoustic channels. However, how to efficiently integrate the UCAN under the statistical QoS constraints is still an open problem. To overcome this difficulty, we propose the QoS-driven power allocation scheme over UCAN. In particular, we propose and analyze the underwater cognitive system models and develop the optimal power allocation scheme in cognitive acoustic scenario udder statistical QoS requirements. Also conducted is a set of simulations which evaluate the system performance over UCAN. © 2016 ACM.

Software-defined networking (SDN) are the rising technology in near future to build programmable networks as a way to simplify the evolution of networks. It is a new networking paradigm with the main aim is to decouple forwarding hardware from control decisions. Several SDN architectures have been recently proposed and evaluated. Performance evaluation of these architectures, to study their scalability, was mainly performed using either simulations or experiments. Generally, experimenting with a real system is ex-pensive or impossible. Simulations are extremely slow especially for large systems and provide little insight on how different design parameters affect the actual performance. Therefore, modeling is more effective for evaluating and optimizing SDN architectures prior their implementation. In this paper, we used Network Calculus to study two typical SDN control plane structures, including centralized, hierarchical with 2level. The model describes the behavior of switches and controllers and allows extracting some performance metrics, mainly the delay and backlog.

Device-to-device communication (also referred to as opportunistic networking) is considered a feasible means for offloading mobile data traffic. Due to the sporadic nature of contact opportunities, applications in the domain of device-to-device communication are assumed to be delay-tolerant, with content delivery deadlines being in the order of hours. However, predictions suggest that by 2020 more than 75% of the traffic volumes at mobile operators will be generated by multimedia contents which is often seen as data served in real-time. In this paper we explore how the concept of opportunistic networking can be used for dissemination of real-time streaming contents for users in urban environments without degrading quality of experience. We first present a general framework for offloading multimedia data that is organized in terms of playlists, and we then investigate the performance of the framework in realistic urban environments using the music streaming service Spotify as a use-case. Our results show that it is feasible to use opportunistic device-to-device communication in the context of music streaming. We demonstrate that the system performance is insensitive to a number of parameters such as playlist length distribution, and initial content availability distribution, however it exhibits sensitivity towards the amount of requested data and the node density.

The quality of multimedia communications heavily relies on the end-to-end network condition. Media sessions that are routed through highly-utilized links are in more jeopardy of longer delays, more packet loss. Choosing optimal routes to embed the data flows can be performed in a centralized manner in SDN-enabled networks. However, the calculation of such optimal flow embedding is NP-hard. In this paper, we propose a Two-phase Flow Embedding heuristic to tackle the problem. Phase I is a global planning module, periodically invoked. Given the total traffic of a time period, it produces the optimal end-to-end tunnels between each pair of communication endpoints. The objective is to balance the traffic distribution, measured by the value of network criticality. Phase II is a traffic engineering module, always active. It receives the individual data flows, and selects one of the pre-configured tunnels between the requested endpoints, to embed the flow. We compare the Two-phase flow embedding heuristic with Dijkstra algorithm. We show that the proposed heuristic outperforms the Dijkstra's in three different metrics: session accept rate, maximum/average substrate link utilization, and network criticality.

Our study reveals that facilitating warm launch of just five smartphone applications is extremely expensive, using up to 36 percent of memory. Further investigation of 20 popular applications indicates that rich multimedia applications have high heap usage and go above allowed boundaries, up to 5.63 times more heap than guaranteed by the system, and may cause crashes and erroneous behaviors. Therefore, we present iRAM, a personalized system that maintains optimal heap size limits to avoid crashes, efficiently maximizes free memory levels, and cleans low-priority processes to reduce application delays. The evaluation on memory hungry applications indicates that iRAM reduces application crashes by up to 14 percent, and reduces launch delays by up to 78.2 percent. In addition, the results confirm that iRAM increases free memory levels by up to 4.8 times. This performance gain comes with 3.5 percent of CPU overhead and 0.9 percent of power overhead.

Cloud computing platform has gained popularity among service providers and consumers to perform business operations due to the ease of communication and transaction convenience in terms of accessibility and availability. However, due to the vulnerability of this dynamic open environment, it is crucial to have a binding agreement between all the service parties for ensuring trust while fulfilling the expected Quality of Services (QoS). There is a need to improve on the current Service Level Agreements (SLAs) practice which does not focus on the QoS and accountability assurance. In this paper, we propose an adaptive monitoring framework to dynamically monitor QoS metrics and performance measures to verify compliances to the respective SLAs. The framework is validated with scenarios on response time and availability which shown to provide adaptive remedy action to rectify violation situation. Besides, any service party which establishes non-compliance to SLAs shall be penalized in monetary terms.

One of the most interesting innovations introduced by modern game console technologies has been that of new interaction systems which allow a large amount of people to interact all together with cultural artifacts and exhibits. Thank to them, human beings can interact with, manipulate and in some circumstances even hack digital contents, playing an active role and becoming part of cultural performance exhibitions. In this paper we present and discuss our recent experience in designing, implementing and putting in practice a hands-free interactive technology which lets visitors explore a hyper-multimedia system, playing a role of those who are able to transform historical audio clips and videos into a piece of public culture which needs to be lived together on a public place. The hands-free system in use is a part of a wider project (called "di Piazza in Piazza"), which comes with the initiatives of the University of Bologna, currently chosen to be displayed at the 2015 Universal Exposition in Milan (EXPO 2015).

This article presents a novel, end-to-end, quality-aware optimization framework for multimedia clouds, where path selection mechanisms are exploited in conjunction with media optimization in order to support multimedia delivery in a quality-aware manner. As wireless data traffic worldwide is characterized by exponential growth, with the most prominent part being multimedia services, consumers get in the challenging position to compete for the limited wireless network resources. Cloud technologies and especially Software-Defined networking is the perfect candidate technology in order to provide an elastic, dynamic provisioning of network resources that adapt to a highly changing environment, where application requirements and data volumes vary over time. This work combines the selection of the optimum path in the core network with quality-aware media adaptation based on the current conditions of the wireless access network. Thus the proposed framework achieves efficient network resources utilization in an end-to-end fashion.

With the advancement of technology in smart-phones and their popularity, users are expecting higher performance and functionality from mobile devices just as powerful non-mobile devices, especially in the context of multimedia applications. However, despite significant advances in handheld devices, there still exists a gap between device capabilities and the requirements of applications. Mobile Cloud computing emergence has overcome the barriers of the mobile device restrictions. To improve the performance of media services processed in clouds, an efficient resource allocation mechanism is needed. In this paper, we propose a resource allocation scheme in Mobile Cloud computing based on Learning Automata technique, taking into account three fundamental concerns: total response time of various types of mobile media services, if they are to be executed on cloud;level of uncertainty (i.e. prone to failure measurement);and computational capacity requirement of services. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed resource allocation scheme can optimally allocate cloud resources to each media service while ensuring minimal QoS requirements of applications.
