Opportunistic Network has become an international hotspot in according with the popularity of various mobile intelligent terminals. But the nodes with limited communication capabilities cannot satisfy the growing of large content data transmission. Aim to these issues, we propose a novel communication capacity calculation model of Opportunistic Network based on the classical Random Direction mobile model. We observe that different size of fragments in large content represents different delivery delays. Considering that the large content are always the multimedia data, it would necessarily produce additional head-part of every fragment, and this will affect the whole overhead of network. We define the restrain facts model of overhead and put forward an optimal fragment size algorithm. Finally, we designed and evaluated the methods and algorithms in simulate circumstance of Opportunistic Networks. The experiments results show that the average value of contact duration and total times of contacts analyzed from logs are all in according with the contact duration expectation and contact times calculated from the model. The optimal size of fragment is located at the well position in the proper range of fragment size.

The increasing demand for multimedia content incur 58.6% of the Internet traffic during the peak period in North America [1] as of 2012. To better accommodate the demand, the computing power and networking components in data centres are being upgraded regularly, leading to higher energy bills. Among many works on energy efficiency, very little attention has been paid in making multimedia streaming systems energy efficient. In this paper, we propose E-2 Stream, an energy-efficient multimedia streaming system. Unlike existing proposals, E-2 Stream utilizes resources in both the data-centre and end-user devices in order to reduce the power consumed by the entire streaming system. Our evaluation results, based on energy profiles from real devices, show that E-2 Stream can dynamically choose energy-efficient source to stream the content, which effectively reduces the energy consumptions among end-user devices and routers involved in the streaming session.

In this work, we propose an adaptive congestion control and avoidance mechanism as an enhancement to our earlier proposed QoS-aware routing protocol. We utilize Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) algorithms for adaptive multipath routing and use the monitoring feature of the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) for QoS computation. So, merging these two methodologies we propose a powerful adaptive multipath QoS-aware routing protocol based on ACO (QoRA). The adaptive nature of QoRA signifies the support of multi-rate data transmission determined by the QoS constraints available on the path. The QoRA routing protocol firstly determines multiple routes based on the applications QoS requirements. Secondly, the congestion control mechanism of QoRA prevents the communication flow from entering into the congested node. QoRA performance is tested for real-time multimedia applications over realistic scenarios simulated using SUMO. The real-time video applications are simulated using H.264/SVC encoded video trace files. We provide an in-depth discussion of the operation of the QoRA routing protocol, which is implemented in the ns-3 simulator. The results obtained after simulation indicates that the enhanced QoRA approach shows better performance for delay and jitter constraints in urban scenarios for multimedia applications as compared to our earlier approach.

Present day requirements of high quality audio and video surveillance has instigated research interests in wireless multimedia sensor networks (WMSN). In order for the WMSN to achieve trademark performance in audio and video surveillance applications, certain design requirements must be met. In this work, we identify vital design issues affecting diversity gain in conditions especially, where channel fading characteristics fluctuate rapidly. We apply the cooperative communication technique in WMSN to create a framework that optimizes diversity gain in an environment where channel state information (CSI) is unknown. We then discuss promising research directions for optimizing diversity gain and non-coherent communication efficiency in cooperative WMSN.

Reliability of communication in unpredictable environments with increased complexity and lossless properties is one of the main objectives in wireless communication technologies. The autonomous nature of Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs) classifies them as an effective solution to address emergency situation scenarios, such as rescue or disaster relief operations that take place in hostile and hazardous environments. This paper proposes a multipath approach based on the proactive Optimized Link State Routing (OLSR) protocol called RESCUE OLSR (R-OLSR), designed as an initial approach of the EU-ICT RESCUE project. The protocol exploits its capability to identify and transmit data via multiple paths based on two different relay approaches named Simple Relay Routing (SRR) and Advanced Relay Routing (ARR). The protocol's efficiency is substantiated through a simulation scenario within a MANET using the NS-3 simulator. The acquired results indicate that a partial flooding of data increases the probability of receiving correct packets, improving the transmission reliability and routing performance.

Embedded and invisible computing resources are paving the way to a new paradigm known as ubiquitous computing. In this paradigm, more attention needs to be paid to the development of context aware applications. Several proposals for the development of these applications are based on a context awareness loop with four phases. First, monitoring context information (Collect). Second, analyzing the collected context information to detect changes (Analysis), third, deciding adaptation actions relative to the changes (Decide). Finally, executing the corresponding adaptation actions to deal accordingly with the changes (Act). In this paper, we discuss the Analysis phase. We propose an analysis approach that aims at detecting the context changes and raising notifications when changes occur. The analysis approach is based on thresholds and formalized through an analysis procedure that aims to facilitate the design of the analysis phase to develop context aware applications in ubiquitous environments. The analysis procedure is described by a set of steps used by the application designers to design context aware applications. In order to demonstrate the usefulness of our approach, we present a Smart Building case study and we illustrate the use of our analysis procedure through a Smart Building application scenario.

Cloud computing is computing in which large groups of remote servers are networked to allow centralized data storage and on-line access to computer services. Cloud computing providers install and operate application software in the cloud through Software as a Service (SaaS) model. Cloud users access the software and utilizes the services by cloning tasks onto multiple virtual machines (VMs). In recent years, offering high-performance computing capacity reminds cloud providers to utilize resources fully due to limitation of resource. Enhancing resource utilization is also essential for achieving cost effectiveness. In addition, SaaS applications support various services such as email, FTP, and multimedia services with different delay requirement. Among these application multimedia service has relatively low delay requirements. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a scheduling algorithm to enhance both deadline guarantee and resource utilization. We modified the conservative backfilling algorithm by utilizing the earliest deadline first (EDF) algorithm and the largest weight first (LWF) algorithm. The proposed algorithm first score all the jobs arrived at the data center(DC) and sort the jobs in ascending order to serve high priority job first. The proposed algorithm then select the largest possible backfill job as guaranteeing deadline. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm significantly improve the performance in terms of resource utilization and deadline guarantee.

Communications for mobile sink groups such as rescue teams or platoons bring about a new challenging issue for handling mobility in wireless sensor networks. Recently, a group region-based approach has been proposed to send data to a mobile sink group. However, it uses flooding for discovering and notifying group region information and flooding or long distance forwarding for disseminating data. Thus, it causes high energy consumption and data delivery failure. Moreover, its per-sink mobility supporting scheme makes energy consumption and data delivery failure more serious. Thus, this letter proposes an Energy-efficient and Reliable Mobile Group communication protocol (ERMG) to support a mobile sink group, which exploits a virtual grid structure. For the group region discover and notification and the data dissemination, ERMG uses communications with only cell heads of grid cells that manages group sinks. ERMG also uses a per-grid based scheme to support sink mobility. Simulation results show that ERMG has better performance than the existing protocols.

Cloud computing is the long envisaged vision of computing as a utility. Innovative advances in hardware, networking, middleware, and virtual machine technologies have led to an emergence of new, globally distributed computing platforms, namely cloud computing. Cloud computing provides computation facilities and storage as services accessible from anywhere via the Internet without investing in new infrastructure, training, or software licensing. In other words, Cloud computing is a way to increase the capacity or add capabilities dynamically. The main advantage of Cloud computing is that users only utilize what they require and only pay for what they really use. With an exponential growth of the mobile applications and evolution of cloud computing concept, Mobile Cloud computing (MCC) has been presented as a potential technology for mobile services. MCC incorporates the cloud computing into the mobile environment. Mobile Cloud computing refers to an infrastructure where data processing and storage can happen away from mobile device. Mobile Cloud computing (MCC) has transformed the way in which mobile users across the globe leverage services on the go. The obstacles related to performance (e.g. battery life, storage, and bandwidth), environment (e.g. heterogeneity, scalability, availability) and security (e.g. reliability and privacy) are overcome by integrating cloud computing into the mobile environment using MCC. Mobile cloud is a service model, where a mobile device can use the cloud for information storage, searching, data mining and multimedia processing. Cloud computing technology also brings forth many new challenges for data security and access control when users store sensitive data on cloud servers.
