Quality of Service (QoS) is imperative for multimedia real-time applications to ensure optimal use of the communication channels and deliver Video conference (VC) with acceptable quality. Several algorithms have been proposed in the literature to optimize the use of the bandwidth when both VC and Internet browsing are operating at the same time. In this paper we apply three of these methods, Guaranteed Bandwidth or custom queuing (CQ), weighted fair queuing (WFQ), and a combination of them, on Sudanese Research and Education Network (SudREN) and investigate their performance using Real Time Protocol (RTP) and H.323 standards. The results show that the combined method achieved the best performance.

The goal of smart cities can be summarized as optimizing the city's services (transportation, utilities, safety and many others) in order to improve the quality of life of its residents. A means to this goal is the heavy use of information and communications technology to give the city awareness of the real world and enable intelligent decision making. At the same time, the field of Affective computing aims to give machines the ability to interpret and utilize human emotions. It is argued that emotions are an inseparable aspect of human intelligence. We thus propose our vision of the affect-aware city. By being capable of understanding the affective states of its citizens, the city's decision making processes can be brought in line with what truly matters to the people. We give an overview of the relevant affective states. We show how they can be detected individually and then aggregated into a global model of affect. The paper concludes with some inspiring applications that are possible in an affective city.

Fault injection plays a critical role in the verification of software’s reliability. This paper presents a fault injection method by mutation. Moreover, a strategy of using semantic-based mutators is proposed to improve the efficiency of mutation testing. We implemented the method in FIT, an automatic fault injection tool. Experiments prove that the method is effective and the tool can produce lots of mutants which show that mutation testing is satisfying. © 2015 Taylor & Francis Group, London.

One of the factors influencing the quality of a mobile user's multimedia experience is the rate at which they can receive data. To connect to the wireless network that best meets their needs a user must first detect available networks and then select the most suitable network. However, it may not always be in the best interest of the user to actually invoke a network detection and selection strategy. Simulation results show that in certain conditions it is detrimental to the end user to switch networks, even when an apparently 'better' network is detected. In order to help decide when it is appropriate to invoke network detection and selection algorithms, this paper introduces the Scan-Or-Not-to-Scan (SONS) framework. SONS decides based on environmental inputs, when to invoke or not a network detection and selection algorithm. The use of the SONS framework enables the user to conserve energy by shutting down unused interfaces and maximise data throughput. Reducing the number of unnecessary handovers helps maintain the mobile user multimedia quality of experience.

In Recent times Wireless sensor network (WSNs) has become one of the most interesting networking technologies since, it can be expanded without communication infrastructures. Wireless sensor network face certain limitations such as power, data redundancy and high bandwidth requirement when used for multimedia data. The researchers have focused on the video encoding at the multimedia sensors side, applying the real-time compression on the video data at a base station. This analytical study, represents the size of video which affects the bandwidth and time. These networks now support a wide range of applications. Real-time multimedia applications have rigorous requirements for one-to-one delay loss during network transport. The objective of this paper is to use classification of the block matching algorithms and an evolutionary criteria for video compression. Finally, a detailed study has been made on comparison of various algorithms that have been implemented for video compression along with advantages and disadvantages they face.

Federating the portability and mobility of mobile devices with the computation capacity on desktop computers have been a widely discussed computation model for the next decade. However, the mobility of the mobile devices also introduces challenges on the federation. This work developed the elastic computation framework to tackle the aforementioned challenge. The elastic computation framework federates the computation resources on wearable devices, mobile devices, nearby computers, and remote computers into a pool of computation resources. Each resource in the pool is characterized by its network delay, expected response time, and computation capability. Each mobile device is also characterized by its mobility and computation workload requirements. The elastic computation framework assigns computation resources in the pool to meet the workload requirements on mobile devices. The framework consists of resource allocation component, task scheduling algorithm, and task dispatch middleware. In the experiment, we compare the developed scheduling algorithm with other known algorithms by simulation. The results show that the developed scheduling algorithm does not complete the most tasks though, the cost-performance of system resources is the best among all the algorithms. To be specific, the cost-performance of the developed algorithm can be at least two times better than that of compared algorithms.

Recent developments in inference and learning in Dynamic Bayesian networks (DBN) allow their use in real-world applications is the first successful application of DBNs to a large scale speech recognition problem. Even if their progress is huge, those models lack a discriminatory ability especially on speech recognition such as the Hidden Markov models (HMM). In this paper, we present the performance of the hybridization of Supports Vectors machine with Dynamic Bayesian networks for Arabic triphones-based continuous speech. In fact, SVM are based on a structural risk minimization (SRM) where the aim is to set up a classifier that minimizes a bound on the expected risk, rather than the empirical risk. The best results are obtained with the proposed system SVM/DBN when we achieve 78.87% as the best recognition rate of a tested speaker. The speech recognizer was evaluated with ARABIC_DB corpus and performs at 8.04% WER as compared to 10.08% with triphones mixture-Gaussian DBN system, 10.54% with hybrid model SVM/ HMM and 12.03% with HMM standards.

Handover algorithms typically operate by assigning preconfigured threshold or weight values onto network performance metrics such as delay, data loss and signal strength. Such approaches are performance limited as they do not consider external factors that affect the network such as the physical environment and current weather conditions. Previous research illustrates that foliage density combined with detrimental weather conditions can have degrading effects on wireless links. The changes to these environmental factors over long vehicular-based mobile user sessions can lead to sub-optimal handover decisions and a negative impact on a user's Quality of Experience during mobile video streaming. There is need for a handover approach that adapts to these factors and mitigates any negative effects that occur. This paper proposes a method for Environmental factor Mitigation on multimedia StreamIng Networks (EMULSIoN). EMULSIoN uses a perceptron artificial neural network approach to mitigate the latency and delays caused by environmental factors. Using dynamic network performance metrics and with known topographical data, the EMULSIoN directed learning approach can learn from previous user sessions to mitigate these environmental effects. EMULSIoN further uses GPS and topographical data to divide vehicular routes into small sub-areas for optimal performance in varied terrain. Results illustrate that EMULSIoN has significant video quality improvements in comparison to pre-configured weight handover strategies.

Earned Value Management (EVM) is the most recognized tool for monitoring and controlling project performance. Its ultimate goal is to provide reliable early warning signals about the cost and schedule performance of a project. However, EVM has its limitations in monitoring and controlling software project activities. The lack of quality performance indicator and the inadequacy in incorporating the impact of the software fuzzy nature, volatile requirements, and unplanned reworks in its forecasting model are among these limitations. This paper proposed a fuzzy quality-based EVM model integrating cost, schedule, and quality for a given software project. The primary contribution of the paper is the introduction of the Quality Performance Index (QPI), which is expected to enhance the accuracy of cost performance monitoring and controlling.

Nowadays, the explosive growth of real-time applications that need stringent Quality of Service (QoS) and Quality of Experience (QoE) support, forces network programmers to design network protocols that deliver specified performance guarantees. This paper exploits the use of Software-Defined networking (SDN) in conjunction with the OpenFlow protocol to differentiate network services with quality level assurance and to respect agreed Service Level Agreements. Initially, we define a Management and Orchestration architecture that allows us to manage the network in a modular way. Then, we provide a seamless integration of the proposed architecture and the SDN standard following the separation between the control and data planes. Finally, we give an Integer Linear Programming formulation of the problem of enhancing QoS and QoE in SDNs in terms of packet loss and delay, taking into account the network constraints and the requirements of real-time applications, i.e., maximum acceptable packet loss and delay rates. Given the optimal solution of the problem, we evaluate the impact and benefits of the proposed scheme by means of the Mininet network emulator.
