The increasing demand for multimedia content incur 58.6% of the Internet traffic during the peak period in North America as of 2012. To better accommodate the demand, the computing power and networking components in data centres are being upgraded regularly, leading to higher energy bills. Among many works on energy efficiency, very little attention has been paid in making multimedia streaming systems energy efficient. In this paper, we propose E 2 Stream, an energy-efficient multimedia streaming system. Unlike existing proposals, E 2 Stream utilizes resources in both the data-centre and end-user devices in order to reduce the power consumed by the entire streaming system. Our evaluation results, based on energy profiles from real devices, show that E 2 Stream can dynamically choose energy-efficient source to stream the content, which effectively reduces the energy consumptions among end-user devices and routers involved in the streaming session.

The key technology of next generation network, IP multimedia Subsystem ( IMS), lacks of scalability, reliability and load balancing ability because of its traditional centralized control architecture. Using P2P ( peer-to-peer) technology to transform architecture of the traditional IMS core network is a feasible solution, while the function separation and independent operation requirements of IMS network elements in telecommunication career level can not be met. In this paper, we present a multi-domain and multi-overlay framework of P2P IMS core network based on cloud infrastructure. In this framework, various network elements ( NEs) are divided into different domains and overlay of the core network. Experimental results indicate that this framework can be deployed in the actual operating core network and provides core functions. Besides, the service capacity grows linearly as the number of serving nodes increases. The load can be automatically distributed on each element in a balanced way and the maximum load difference between elements is no more than 16%. Moreover, the response time of redesigned procedures is much smaller than the original procedures.

Social interaction of groups of users, amongst themselves and with the media content itself, is increasingly becoming popular due to the advancements in the Internet access technologies. However, multimedia resource provisioning for dispersed user groups poses a challenge and demands innovative technologies. This paper proposes a novel approach based on Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) to optimally allocate computational and networking resources to a group of interactive users, such that the group Quality-of-Service (QoS) is maximized. We evaluate the performance of the proposed improved PSO method with respect to the state-of-the-art greedy resource allocation mechanisms and related PSO approaches. The ability to find a feasible solution (i.e., the serving probability) and the accuracy of such solutions are compared for different network topologies. The proposed method demonstrates reduced computational complexity, an up to 40% increase in the serving probability compared to the greedy methods, and up to 60 times faster convergence compared to the basic PSO approach. Overall, the comparable QoS level to the optimal solution suggests that the proposed solution efficiently allocates the resources available in the network. © 2015 IEEE.

Network Function Virtualization (NFV) allows Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to implement key function modules, such as, BRAS (Broadband Remote Access Server), IMS (Internet multimedia System), etc. in virtual machines in a cloud environment. One of the key problems in NFV implementation is the placement of virtual machines (VMs) in clouds managed by different cloud service providers each with its own management interface. It would be helpful if the clients can implement their policies in a multi-cloud environment using a single interface. Our proposed solution is a modular multi-cloud management system called OpenADN that provides a common interface for resource allocation in a multi-cloud environment. The solution is also applicable to non-ISP applications, such as, banking, financial, and other sectors that need to use globally distributed multi-cloud resources. This paper presents a brief overview of the OpenADN architecture. The key feature of OpenADN is that multiple tenants can share the resources and all resource owners keep complete control over their resources. The data plane module of OpenADN is called OpenADN (Open Application Delivery Network). OpenADN has been implemented and brief details of implementation are also presented in this paper.

Technical and economic opportunities of cloud computing become the focus for Internet applications and at the same time also for telco support infrastructures and network services. In fact, many telco providers are consolidating their service infrastructures towards converged and all-IP next generation networks providing typical telco services within LTE (and soon 5G) and also fixed network environments, e.g., often still adopting IP multimedia Subsystem (IMS) architecture solutions. This telco service infrastructure evolution requires a significant upfront investment in the necessary hardware and software, thereby slowing down the adoption process significantly more than any other Internet application. Cloud computing applied to telco infrastructures can allow pay-per-use business models and significantly lower investment risks by providing telco infrastructure functionality as Virtual Network Functions (VNFs) on top of a Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) platform. For this purpose we propose a quality audit and resource brokering framework that is fully NFV-compliant. Its current and reported implementation specifically targets IMS services because of the still relevant role played by IMS in converged provisioning and the wide availability of IMS deployment testbeds to validate the proposal. In particular, the proposed solution can monitor the quality offered by VNFs and scale in/out depending on dynamic requirements;it is fully based on industrial standards and open-source reference implementations, thus enabling rapid adoption in real industrial environments.

Pretend play is a play where children assign roles and then act them out. A child may even imagine himself as a giant among his toys in his play. To rebuild such pretend play, immersive gaming experience is required throughout the gameplay. We introduce Fighting Gulliver, featuring an innovative game design that integrates cutting-edge technologies including virtual reality (VR), body motion input methods, mobile devices, and wearable devices. The player with VR headsets and body motion capturing devices plays as the giant, while others without the two devices join forces to defeat the giant. Players playing character roles other than the giant are not limited on a desktop device. Entering the game through different devices results in different character roles, skills, and user interfaces. As a result, Fighting Gulliver is a cross-platform multiplayer online role-playing game (MORPG) with novel gaming experience and unique game settings rarely found in previous works. Game balance design and a user study are also discussed in this work. Copyright is held by the author/owner(s).

This paper proposes a novel and efficient distributed flow control for wireless multimedia networks using cooperative communications, based on the Proportional Integral (PI) controllers. The control parameters can be designed to ensure the stability of the control loop in terms of source rate. The distributed explicit rate controller is located at the wireless multimedia sensor source to regulate the transmission rate for mission. We further analyse the theoretical aspects of the proposed algorithm. Simulation results demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed scheme in terms of system stability, fast response, and high efficiency for mission-oriented multimedia systems. Simulation results show that the performance of our scheme is improved more than 10% when compared with other method.

The Internet has recently witnessed the convergence of on-line social network services and online video services: users import videos from content sharing sites, and propagate them along the social connections by re-sharing them. Such social behaviors have dramatically reshaped how videos are disseminated, and the users are now actively engaged to be part of the social ecosystem, rather than being passively con-sumers. Despite the increasingly abundant bandwidth and computation resources, the ever increasing data volume of user generated video content and the boundless coverage of socialized sharing have presented unprecedented challenges. In this paper, we first presents the challenges in social-aware video delivery. Then, we present a principal framework for data-driven social video delivery approaches. Moreover, we identify the unique characteristics of social-aware video ac-cess and the social content propagation, and closely reveal the design of individual modules and their integration to-wards enhancing users' experience in the social network con-text. © 2015 ACM.

Mobile devices and applications for communication, such as WhatsApp, Facebook and Twitter, are already present in educational contexts. However, their use is generally restricted to the original purpose of informal communication without taking advantage of their potential to promote interaction in formal settings. In this paper, we investigate the design and use of mobile applications in formal communication processes, exploring meaning evolution of WhatsApp use in a real context. We propose a system to enable students to conduct preparatory pre-class activities using WhatsApp with text commands and multimedia messages. Our analysis of the system use suggests that it is feasible to appropriate mobile communication applications with which students are already familiar for the use in formal contexts. © 2015 Association for computing Machinery.

Event detection in social media platforms has become an important task. It facilities exploration and browsing of events with early plans for preventive measures. The main challenges in event detection lie in the characteristics of social media data, which are short/conversational, heterogeneous and live. Most of existing methods rely only on the textual information while ignoring the visual content as well as the intrinsic correlation among the heterogeneous social media data. In this paper, we propose an event detection method, which generates an intermediate semantic entity, named microblog clique (MC), to explore the highly correlated information among the noisy and short microblogs. The heterogeneous social media data is formulated as a hypergraph and the highly correlated ones are grouped to generate the MCs. Based on these MCs, a bipartite graph is constructed and partitioned to detect social events. The proposed method has been evaluated on the Brand-Social-Net dataset. Experimental results and comparison with state-of-the-art methods demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. Further evaluation has shown that the use of the visual content can significantly improve the event detection performance. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.
