Vehicular ad hoc network (VANET) is a valuable and important wireless ad-hoc network which uses advanced wireless technologies. It has become most popular in this digital world of Internet Of Things(IOT) because of it wide verity of applications such as e-commerce on the fly in vehicles, sharing multimedia contents such as audio, video, playing games, multihop dissemination of emergency messages to other vehicles, accesing internet and cloud services on the move. However VANET suffer many challenges such as link failure because of high mobility of vehicles, and also current VANET architecture is not flexible for the wide range of IOT and cloud computing applications. Recently Ian Ku, You Lu, Mario Gerla et. al proposed a new architecture for VANET based on software Defined Networks (SDNs) and they discussed various new services and applications that can be supported by the new architecture. They proposed a new routing protocol for VANETS using SDN and compared with existing MANET/VANET protocols and showed better performance. In this paper we show that their protocol still suffers some problems in certain scenario which results performance degradation and an improved routing protocol is proposed and analyzed with better performance.

Quality of Experience (QoE) means how a user perceives the usability of a service when in use (i.e., how satisfied he or she is with a service). This paper proposes a navigation-based approach to facilitating improved QoE of wireless local area networks. By exploiting the spatial information and the pre-measured QoE, the proposed method navigates the user to a suitable location having good experience of the network/services. Performance was evaluated in realistic wireless local area networks, in which QoE is measured as packet successful rate. The results demonstrate that the proposed system successfully navigates users to enjoy sufficient QoE of multimedia applications.

Social media has exploded beyond anyone's wildest imagination, and User Generated Content (UGC) is propagated online at an unparalleled level. Organizing and associating the heterogeneous UGC data in different social media networks is playing a more and more important role in comprehensive user modeling and social media applications. Since social media data are essentially user-centric, which are generated from user and customized for user, we introduce a user-centric dataset to analyze and exploit the social media heterogeneity, which involves with six popular social media networks and 180, 000 overlapped users. A pilot study on the collected dataset is conducted to demonstrate the limitations of traditional content-centric metrics in analyzing the cross-OSN data. Finally, we conclude this work with discussions on the potentials of usercentric framework for cross-OSN organization and association. © 2015 ACM.

In recent years, the number of appliances connected to the Interned has steadily increased thanks to the wide popularity of WiFi/3G enabled mobile devices. This has led to an increase of multimedia resource consumption, causing traffic overload problems for classic resource providers. Different solutions have been studied to shift this traffic overhead from the server(s) towards the client(s) through the employment of the so called swarming protocols. However, most of these solutions have been verified only through simulations. While simulations consist in a necessary first step, they can be far from the actual outcome of employing real protocols and devices. To this end, in this paper we describe BlueFall, an application that could allow to test swarming protocols using actual mobile phones. Pursuing our goal, we provide some preliminary evidence on two simple swarming schemes we have implemented in our testbed.

The current mobile network has been developed to a heterogeneous network that is coexistence of different wireless networks such as UMTS (3G), WIFI, WIMAX (4G) and LTE (4G). Since the demand of realtime multimedia services has significantly increased in recent years and Quality of Experience (QoE) becomes more and more important to users, any single wireless network is hardly to maintain good QoE of multimedia service at any time and in anywhere for any users. Hence, in order to achieve the goal, it is necessary to converge different wireless networks to take the advantages of different wireless networks. However, even though IEEE 802.21-Media Independent Handover (MIH) provides a framework for supporting seamless vertical handover (VHO), how to select an appropriate network and when to carry out handover are still the key challenges to maintain QoE of multimedia service. This paper addresses a QoE-driven VHO algorithm based on MIH that aims to maintain multimedia service with acceptable QoE and avoid unnecessary handover in the heterogeneous network. The performance evaluation was carried out to compare with default MIH bandwidth-based VHO algorithm on video service over UMTS and WIFI networks in Network Simulator 2 (NS2). The results showed that the QoE-driven VHO algorithm could maintain better QoE of multimedia service than the bandwidth-based VHO algorithm by considering video content, and initiated VHO immediately when the QoE of multimedia service became unacceptable. Furthermore, Block List (BL) and acceptable QoE policy could avoid unnecessary handover effectively.

Future Fifth-Generation (5G) networks are expected to be underpinned by Software-Defined networking (SDN) and to predominantly carry multimedia traffic. Ambitious 5G Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) call for reliable, low-latency and high-density networks capable of supporting Ultra High-Definition (UHD) video. Video streaming and multimedia traffic engineering over SDN networks is an important emerging research area where innovative solutions will be required to meet the challenging 5G KPIs. This paper proposes a holistic SDN control plane approach to multimedia transmission engineering problem in which we employ state-of-the-art scalable video encoding based on the latest H.265 video standard, combined with a contextually aware SDN controller. The controller has knowledge of both the network and the scalable characteristics of multimedia streams and makes decisions aimed at meeting 5G KPIs by reducing latency, maintaining reliability and integrity of the network whilst meeting users' Quality of Experience (QoE) expectations.

The continuous growth of energy consumption has become a critical issue globally. According to the international energy agency, the energy consumed in residential and commercial buildings contributed about 40% of the total energy consumption in 2014. In recent years, building energy management has become a popular research topic. The techniques used in automatic control have evolved from static schedules specified manually into real-time sensing through wireless sensor network. The demand for a dedicated platform for building energy management systems has emerged later. Many proposed platforms focused on the high-level architecture and were based on existing standards and technologies. However, there was little research about the fundamental aspects of the infrastructure. In this paper, we propose a scheduling mechanism for the fundamental infrastructure based on the distributed pinwheel model. It addresses the issues of distributed real-time computing, and provides a more predictable system behavior for potential improvement of energy consumption of the infrastructure itself. Unlike the original distributed pinwheel model, we also take network delay into account, and present an adaptive method to mitigate the effects of variable network delay. The simulation results suggest that the total end-to-end delay can be reduced to 20% or lower for more than half of the input task sets without the presence of variable network delay. The adaptive method shows an improvement of 10.06% to 61.16% with the presence of variable network delay.

Present day requirements of high quality audio and video surveillance has instigated research interests in wireless multimedia sensor networks (WMSN). In order for the WMSN to achieve trademark performance in audio and video surveillance applications, certain design requirements must be met. In this work, we identify vital design issues affecting diversity gain in conditions especially, where channel fading characteristics fluctuate rapidly. We apply the cooperative communication technique in WMSN to create a framework that optimizes diversity gain in an environment where channel state information (CSI) is unknown. We then discuss promising research directions for optimizing diversity gain and noncoherent communication efficiency in cooperative WMSN.

Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH) is being adopted as a cost effective means for multimedia delivery. User Adaptive Video (UAV) is a new technique that exploits the perceptual limits of the human visual system to modulate a video stream's bit rate based on the viewing conditions, such as viewing distance and ambient illuminance, resulting in significant bandwidth reduction without perceived loss of quality to the user. UAV presents an opportunity to significantly improve the efficiency of DASH by not requesting unnecessarily high bit rate video. Due to the random access nature of the Wi-Fi MAC protocol and the intricate interaction among DASH traffic flows, it is not clear whether UAV will manifest its benefits in Wi-Fi networks. We design UAV-enabled DASH (UDASH) and evaluate its performance in Wi-Fi networks. We show that UDASH in a Wi-Fi network has the benefits of not only improving the video streaming performance such as reducing the rebuffering probability, but also enhancing the performance of cross traffic. We also give the conditions under which the benefits can be achieved. Simulation results confirm that the benefits of UDASH are significant.

Earned Value Management (EVM) is the most recognized tool for monitoring and controlling project performance. Its ultimate goal is to provide reliable early warning signals about the cost and schedule performance of a project. However, EVM has its limitations in monitoring and controlling software project activities. The lack of quality performance indicator and the inadequacy in incorporating the impact of the software fuzzy nature, volatile requirements, and unplanned reworks in its forecasting model are among these limitations. This paper proposed a fuzzy quality-based EVM model integrating cost, schedule, and quality for a given software project. The primary contribution of the paper is the introduction of the Quality Performance Index (QPI), which is expected to enhance the accuracy of cost performance monitoring and controlling.
