Noncontiguous Channel Allocation for multimedia Communication in Cognitive Radio Networks

In conventional wireless systems, unless a contiguous frequency band with width at least equal to the required bandwidth is obtained, multimedia communication cannot be effected with the desired quality of service. We propose here a novel channel allocation technique to overcome this limitation in a cognitive radio network, which is based on utilizing several noncontiguous channels, each of width smaller than the required bandwidth, but whose sum equals at least the required bandwidth. We present algorithms for channel sensing, channel reservation, and channel deallocation along with transmission and reception protocols with two different implementations based on FDM-FDMA and OFDM-FDMA techniques. Simulation results for both these implementations show that the proposed technique outperforms the existing first-fit and best-fit allocation techniques in terms of the average number of attempts needed for acquiring the necessary number of channels for all traffic situations ranging from light to extremely heavy traffic. Furthermore, the proposed technique can allocate the required numbers of channels in less than 1 s with FDM-FDMA even (4.5 s with OFDM-FDMA) for 96% traffic load, while the first-fit and best-fit techniques fail to allocate any channel in such situations.

Content-centric networking has been recently proposed to define a new networking architecture where the content itself becomes the core of communications rather than the address or location. In terms of availability and efficient delivery of data, content-centric networking has been the main focus to a great extent. Currently, the content-centric networking architecture for the wireless environment is not yet clearly defined. In this paper, we propose a possible architecture for multimedia content delivery in the wireless environment, which is based on content-centric networking. We also present simulation results to show that the proposed architecture works well in the wireless network.

Consumption of multimedia content is moving from a residential environment to mobile phones. Optimizing Quality of Experience - smooth, quick, and high quality playback - is more difficult in this setting, due to the highly dynamic nature of wireless links. A key requirement for achieving this goal is estimating the available bandwidth of mobile devices. Ideally, this should be done quickly and with low overhead. One challenge is that the majority of connections on mobiles are short-lived TCP connections, where a significant portion of data exchange is within the slow start phase. In this paper, we propose a novel method that passively estimates the currently available bandwidth by monitoring the minimal traffic generated by such connections. To the best of our knowledge, no other solution can operate with such constrained input. Our estimation method is able to achieve good precision despite artifacts introduced by the slow start behavior of TCP, mobile scheduler and phone hardware. We evaluate our solution against traces collected in 4 European countries. Furthermore, the small footprint of our algorithm allows its deployment on resource limited devices.

Routing and resource allocation are two major research directions for cloud computing, especially for improving the response time in multimedia cloud computing. In this paper, we propose network model for the transmission time between data centers and design routing algorithms for multimedia cloud computing. We further propose resource allocation with the goal to minimize the resource cost. We show some first simulation results of our proposed algorithms.

Smart mobile devices are already used for everyday communication between people. They have become ubiquitous devices for receiving and sharing important information, but they poses limited capability of storing and processing multimedia content. Considering that mobile devices will always have these mentioned limitations, the proposed solution is to use collaborative, adaptive multimedia content delivery and the cloud computing technology. In order to gain increased perception of quality of m-learning systems, the proposed model delivers three services for selection, transcoding and authoring multimedia content, which should be hosted by SaaS cloud computing model. The proposed model for collaborative and adaptive multimedia content delivery will provide the mobile learners with cloud-based services. These services will facilitate the delivery of the preferred multimedia content across heterogeneous network to various types of mobile devices that learners are using. The advantage of the proposed framework is proved by using a sample mobile application for our case study, which estimates the operation of the service for multimedia content selection and authoring service.

Network Function Virtualization (NFV) allows Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to implement key function modules, such as, BRAS (Broadband Remote Access Server), IMS (Internet multimedia System), etc. in virtual machines in a cloud environment. One of the key problems in NFV implementation is the placement of virtual machines (VMs) in clouds managed by different cloud service providers each with its own management interface. It would be helpful if the clients can implement their policies in a multi-cloud environment using a single interface. Our proposed solution is a modular multi-cloud management system called OpenADN that provides a common interface for resource allocation in a multi-cloud environment. The solution is also applicable to non-ISP applications, such as, banking, financial, and other sectors that need to use globally distributed multi-cloud resources. This paper presents a brief overview of the OpenADN architecture. The key feature of OpenADN is that multiple tenants can share the resources and all resource owners keep complete control over their resources. The data plane module of OpenADN is called OpenADN (Open Application Delivery Network). OpenADN has been implemented and brief details of implementation are also presented in this paper.

With the rapid development of mobile networking and end-terminals, anytime and anywhere data access becomes readily available nowadays. Given the crowd sourced content capturing and sharing, the preferred length becomes shorter and shorter, even for such multimedia content as video. A representative is Twitter's Vine service, which, mainly targeting mobile users, enables them to create ultra-short video clips, and instantly post and share them with their followers. In this paper, we present an initial study on this new generation of instant video clip sharing service enabled by mobile platforms and explore the potentials for its further enhancement. Taking Vine as a case study, we closely investigate its unique user behaviors, revealing how such Vine-enabled anytime anywhere data access patterns differentiate mobile instant video clip sharing from its traditional counterparts. We then formulate a generic scheduling problem to maximize the user watching experience as well as the efficiency on the monetary and energy costs. To better solve it, we divide the problem into two sub problems, specifically, the pre-fetching scheduling problem and the watch-time download scheduling problem, and conquer them separately. We further demonstrate the preliminary evaluation result to show the superiority of our solution. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work on modeling and optimizing the instant video clip sharing on mobile devices.

In this paper, we propose an extended deep learning approach that incorporates instance selection and bootstrapping techniques for imbalanced data classification. In supervised learning, classification performance often deteriorates when the training set is imbalanced where at least one of the classes has a substantially fewer number of instances than the others. We propose to use adaptive synthetic sampling approach (ADASYN) to generate synthetic instances for the minority class. A data pruning process based on multiple correspondence analysis (MCA) is then performed to identify a sub-set of synthetic instances that are most suitable to supplement the existing minority instances. This results in a relatively more balanced training dataset which is then bootstrapped and fed into the convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for classification. Furthermore, we propose to use low-level features pre-processed by principal component analysis (PCA), instead of the commonly used raw signal data, as the input to CNNs to reduce the computational time. The experimental results show the effectiveness of our framework in classifying 54 TRECVID concepts with different imbalanced levels by comparing with other state-of-the-art methods.

Cognitive assessment in collaborative and social learning requires a broad perspective about learning and the involved processes. Assessment processes have a significant effect on collaborative learning because they engage learners through accountability and constructive feedback. However, in order to design a coherent and efficient assessment system for collaborative and social learning it is necessary to design an enriched learning experience that predisposes the feedback and awareness in the group. This paper focuses on e-assessment of collaborative learning and extends it with Social Network Analysis (SNA) techniques that are able to analyze and represent social network interaction during the live sessions of collaboration by using collaborative complex learning resources (CC-LR). The knowledge extracted from analyzing the large amounts of interaction data related to social and collaborative networking is then integrated into a general assessment system to produce an efficient and personalized awareness and feedback about the collaborative activity and the social behavior of the participants to ultimately enhance and improve the collaborative learning experience with CC-LRs. The conceptual and methodological research approach is provided along with the evaluation design of e-assessment applications and tools that meet the mentioned requirements and goals.

The IEEE 802.15.4/ZigBee technology is emerging as an important wireless sensor networking solution for short and medium range communication due to its numerous advantages. On the other hand, multimedia applications have gained increasing popularity that gives us the opportunity to improve this technology to support video transmission. In limited bandwidth ZigBee networks (250 kbps at 2.4 GHz), how to increase the throughput in constrained environments has become the main challenge. Multi-path becomes a crucial feature in supporting video transmission. Using simultaneous multiple paths provides the bandwidth requirements of multimedia applications. Unfortunately, concurrent transmission creates the problem of inter-path interference mainly due to the broadcast nature of the underlying medium. In this paper, we propose an interference-minimized multipath routing to facilitate MPEG-4 video transmission over ZigBee-based WSNs. This latter is evaluated using comparison with an interfering multipath routing version and the single path routing under different video frame rates. Results show that the proposed interference-aware multipath routing for Zig Bee-based WSNs can dramatically reduce the level of interference and thus maximize the overall throughput and improve the received video quality.
