In Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs), supporting Quality of Service (QoS) to enable a rich portfolio of applications/real-time multimedia applications is foreseen to be vital for the success of next generation networking technologies. However, today's cutting edge standards are not perfectly equipped to cater to this task. These standards come with an inherent complexity and suffer from innate problems with respect to QoS provisioning. Consequently, due to the limited resource of WMNs and increasingly demand of new applications, there is a need for devising innovative routing algorithms for supporting QoS on top of the existing standards. Thus, this paper presents a cross layer relay node selection scheme for routing protocols in order to offer optimal routes to real-time applications. Distinguished from guaranteeing a certain level of performance, our QoS scheme provides differentiated priorities and service levels to application with different needs. The scheme includes two parts. In the first part, we present an application priority model to update the application/priority table from the gateway periodically. Secondly, a new routing metric combining application priority, channel busy level and hop count, is deployed to evaluate and select the best from plurality possible paths during the communication phase. Our simulation experiments confirm the superiority of the proposed scheme against a number of existing counterparts.

With the advent of social networks and cloud computing, the amount of multimedia data produced and communicated within social networks is rapidly increasing. In the mean time, social networking platform based on cloud computing has made multimedia big data sharing in social network easier and more efficient. The growth of social multimedia, as demonstrated by social networking sites such as Facebook and YouTube, combined with advances in multimedia content analysis, underscores potential risks for malicious use such as illegal copying, piracy, plagiarism, and misappropriation. Therefore, secure multimedia sharing and traitor tracing issues have become critical and urgent in social network. In this paper, we propose a scheme for implementing the Tree-Structured Harr (TSH) transform in a homomorphic encrypted domain for fingerprinting using social network analysis with the purpose of protecting media distribution in social networks. The motivation is to map hierarchical community structure of social network into tree structure of TSH transform for JPEG2000 coding, encryption and fingerprinting. Firstly, the fingerprint code is produced using social network analysis. Secondly, the encrypted content is decomposed by the TSH transform. Thirdly, the content is fingerprinted in the TSH transform domain. At last, the encrypted and fingerprinted contents are delivered to users via hybrid multicast-unicast. The use of fingerprinting along with encryption can provide a double-layer of protection to media sharing in social networks. Theory analysis and experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

Social interaction of groups of users, amongst themselves and with the media content itself, is increasingly becoming popular due to the advancements in the Internet access technologies. However, multimedia resource provisioning for dispersed user groups poses a challenge and demands innovative technologies. This paper proposes a novel approach based on Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) to optimally allocate computational and networking resources to a group of interactive users, such that the group Quality-of-Service (QoS) is maximized. We evaluate the performance of the proposed improved PSO method with respect to the state-of-the-art greedy resource allocation mechanisms and related PSO approaches. The ability to find a feasible solution (i.e., the serving probability) and the accuracy of such solutions are compared for different network topologies. The proposed method demonstrates reduced computational complexity, an up to 40% increase in the serving probability compared to the greedy methods, and up to 60 times faster convergence compared to the basic PSO approach. Overall, the comparable QoS level to the optimal solution suggests that the proposed solution efficiently allocates the resources available in the network.

This paper presents a cloud architecture that allows collecting and analyzing mobile data. The system offers simple and intuitive interfaces to create mobile applications (Apps), without the need for any programming skill to develop them. The platform allows the collection of conventional data, such as numbers and text, and also non-conventional data, such as multimedia files, location information, and barcodes. The collected data can be shared among users on a social network. In addition, we propose a pipeline architecture to data analyzing.

Quality of Service (QoS) -based bandwidth allocation plays a key role in real-time computing systems and applications such as voice IP, teleconferencing, and gaming. Likewise, customer services often need to be distinguished according to their service priorities and requirements. In this paper, we consider bandwidth allocation in the networks of a cloud carrier in which cloud users' requests are processed and transferred by a cloud provider subject to QoS requirements. We present a QoS-guaranteed approach for bandwidth allocation that satisfies QoS requirements for all priority cloud users by using Open vSwitch, based on software defined networking (SDN). We implement and test the proposed approach on the Global Environment for networking Innovations (GENI). Experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

We present design, implementation, and an evaluation of an ant colony optimization (ACO) approach to flow routing in software-defined networking (SDN) environments. While exploiting a global network view and configuration flexibility provided by SDN, the approach also utilizes quality of experience (QoE) estimation models and seeks to maximize the user QoE for multimedia services. As network metrics (e.g., packet loss) influence QoE for such services differently, based on the service type and its integral media flows, the goal of our ACO-based heuristic algorithm is to calculate QoE-aware paths that conform to traffic demands and network limitations. A Java implementation of the algorithm is integrated into SDN controller OpenDaylight so as to program the path selections. The evaluation results indicate promising QoE improvements of our approach over shortest path routing, as well as low running time.

Up to now, the problem of ensuring collaborative activities in e-Learning against dishonest students' behaviour has been mainly tackled with technological security solutions. Over the last years, technological security solutions have evolved from isolated security approaches based on specific properties, such as privacy, to holistic models based on technological security comprehensive solutions, such as public key infrastructures, biometric models and multidisciplinary approaches from different research areas. Current technological security solutions are feasible in many e-Learning scenarios but on-line assessment involves certain requirements that usually bear specific security challenges related to e-Learning design. In this context, even the most advanced and comprehensive technological security solutions cannot cope with the whole scope of e-Learning vulnerabilities. To overcome these deficiencies, our previous research aimed at incorporating information security properties and services into on-line collaborative e-Learning by a functional approach based on trustworthiness assessment and prediction. In this paper, we present a peer-to-peer on-line assessment approach carried out in a real on-line course developed in our real e-Learning context of the Open University of Catalonia. The design presented in this paper is conducted by our trustworthiness security methodology with the aim of building peer-to-peer collaborative activities, which enhances security e-Learning requirements. Eventually, peer-to-peer visualizations methods are proposed to manage security e-Learning events, as well as on-line visualization through peer-to-peer tools, intended to analyse collaborative relationship.

Cloud environment is an efficient solution for both computing intensive and data intensive applications and it is a technology paradigm that is ideal for deploying a user centered mobile learning environment. Efficient use of cloud based services is a key component of successful task scheduling and resource allocation in cloud computing environment. In this paper, we propose a collaborative cloud service model for supporting the student's mobile learning process. The proposed collaborative model creates groups of students with joint interests collecting the relevant information from the existing social networks. The spirit of the proposed collaborative model comes from different aspects and influencing factors with respect to Quality of Experience (QoE) process. Experimental results gathered from using the OPNET simulator have verified the benefits of the proposed multimedia content adaptation collaborative model.

Past experiment-driven research has shown that unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) networks are challenged by system characteristics of the UAVs. The frame and flight dynamics of micro UAVs may cause wireless signal obstruction, data rate adaptation has not been optimized for the aerial use, and brute-force transmission when coming in range of another UAV is not efficient. Further, in multi-hop UAV networks routing algorithms are affected by mobility-related disconnections. Promising transmission and data forwarding solutions exploit delay-tolerant data dissemination as well as location and movement context of the UAVs. Moreover, UAVs are flying robots that can deliberately move to improve communication quality. The paper provides a summary of major findings in past experiment-driven research extended by a discussion of major system and scaling challenges in UAV fleet communication.

The explosion of mobile multimedia and Internet-of-things (IoT) services implies strong requirements for seamless switching among various types of networks. Thus, to offer true ubiquitous Internet connection, a Fixed and Mobile Converged (FMC) network architecture is essential for the future 5G network. Such a convergent network can not only improve the utilization of network resources, but also inspire new add-on services for FMC network operators. In this paper, we introduce a shared caching overlay based on Information Centric networking (ICN). It is deployed on top of the FMC network and controlled by the FMC network operator to offer Caching as a Service (CaaS) to Over-The-Top (OTT) service providers and virtual network operators. Business analysis and performance evaluation will highlight the benefits of deploying such a controlled Shared Caching System (SCS) over an FMC network.
