Many enterprises or institutes are building private clouds within their own data centers. Data centers may have different batches of physical machines due to annual upgrades, but the number of machines is fixed most of the time. Consequently it is crucial to schedule jobs with different resource requirements and characteristics to meet different job timing constraints, in such heterogeneous yet most of the time static environments. This paper describes a cloud resource management framework that dynamically allocates and reallocates computation resources for jobs that have different requirements, including deadline and priority. This framework makes decisions according to specified policies, and the framework provides four default policies for system administrators to choose to fit their specific needs. The framework is designed to be component-pluggable. The components of the framework can be hot-swapped, i.e., Replaced without shutting down the services. In addition, the framework can work as an individual cloud computing system, or as an extension of an existing cloud system. Our experiment results demonstrate that our system is capable of dynamically adjusting the resource allocation plan according to run-time statistics collected. The system also tolerates hardware failures, and will dynamically reallocate workers to compensate for the downtime in order to finish the jobs before deadline. Our experiments also suggest a trade-off between priority and deadline.

People using smartphones to connect to the Internet for day-life activities has overtaken the number of people using canonical PCs. This lead to a huge quantity of security threats that usually tend to penetrate the defenses of a smartphone in order to gain control of its resources. Differently, energy-based attacks have the objective of increasing the energy consumption of the victim device. It is important to highlight that this objective could be possibly achieved by just activating the system's defenses as a consequence of canonical attacks and letting the system defenses detect and (try to) defeat them. These activities consume additional energy and could led the mobile device to its complete uselessness. In this paper, an energy-based attack based on soliciting hardware-level encoding/decoding functions through properly crafted multimedia files is analyzed and its impact evaluated. Such kind of attacks are performed without accessing the device by taking advantage of the new HTML5 functionalities. A series of experiments have been performed in order to understand which are the codecs that have a more relevant impact on energy consumption, and, as a consequence, that make the attack more effective.

Online social networks have been adopted by a large part of the population, and have become in few years essential communication means and a source of information for journalists. Nevertheless, these networks have some drawbacks that make people reluctant to use them, such as the impossibility to claim for ownership of data and to avoid commercial analysis of them, or the absence of collaborative tools to produce multimedia contents with a real editorial value. In this paper, we present a new kind of social networks, namely spontaneous and ephemeral social networks (SESNs). SESNs allow people to collaborate spontaneously in the production of multimedia documents so as to cover cultural and sport events. (C) 2014 The Authors Published by Elsevier B.V.

Devices for Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) are limited by power and thus routing protocols should be designed with this constrain in mind. WSNs are used in three dimensions (3D) scenarios such as surface of sea or lands with different level of highs. This paper presents and evaluates Three Dimensions Position Based Adaptive Real-Time Routing Protocol (3DPBARP) as a novel, real-time, position based and energy efficient routing protocol for Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN)s. 3DPBARP is a lightweight protocol that reduces the number of nodes which receive the RF signal using a novel Parent Forwarding Region (PFR) algorithm. 3DPBARP as a Geographical Routing Protocol (GRP) reduces the number of forwarding nodes and thus the traffic and packet collision in the network. A series of performance evaluations through Matlab and Omnet++ simulations show significant improvements in network performance parameters and total energy consumption over 3D Position Based Routing Protocol (3DPBRP) and Directed Flooding Routing Protocol (DFRP).

Current and new-generation wireless mobile networks face a high demand for very large bandwidth. Due to the high costs of spectrum usage and of the access network development, the network operators could be interested in sharing spectrum and operating costs of the access network. Already, Carrier aggregation, defined in 3GPP Rel. 10 allows a form of easy inter-operator sharing. The cloud computing paradigm will also most likely be extended to cover not only the delivery of computing resources over the Internet, but, in the case of mobile networks, also the delivery of Core Network functionalities to the Access Network, M2M and multimedia applications. The paper discusses the main technological pillars for future converged mobile networks and proposes an architecture reference model for cloud-based management and monitoring of the shared network resources and radio spectrum. The main technical and economic challenges that need to be addressed for this architecture to be deployed are also highlighted.

Some of the state-of-art multimedia source encoders produce embedded source bit streams that upon the reliable reception of only a fraction of the total bit stream, the decoder is able reconstruct the source up to a basic quality. Reliable reception of later source bits gradually improve the decoder reconstruction quality. Examples include scalable extensions of H.264/AVC and progressive image coders such as JPEG2000. To provide an efficient protection for embedded source bit streams, a concatenated block coding mechanism using a minimum mean distortion criterion was considered in the past. Although, the original design was shown to achieve mean distortion characteristics better than that of previous research, the proposed coding structure was leading to dramatic quality fluctuations. In this paper, a modification of the original design is first presented and then the second order statistics of the distortion is taken into account in the optimization. More specifically, an extension scheme is proposed using a minimum distortion variance optimization criterion. This robust system design is tested for an image transmission scenario. Numerical results show that the proposed extension achieves significantly lower variance than the original design, while showing similar mean distortion performance using both convolutional codes and low density parity check codes.

Mobile application development for smartphones is a trend in the telecommunications industry. However, their deployment is not seamless since many applications are not "mobile network-friendly." A key problem that frequently arises is an excessive number of signaling messages, known as signaling storms. This leads to very high overhead and a decrease in operator income. We focus on this problem and propose an approach that is based on an information-centric networking deployment at the access network. We compute the number of signaling messages and derive the conditions under which our approach leads to fewer messages than the approach that is used in current networks. We also argue about the network and application layer modifications that are needed for the adoption of our method.

As one of the next frontiers in wireless communications, Machine Type Communications not only support traditional short message service, but also provide multimedia services, such as voice and video services. The 3rd Generation Partnership Project has made a series of technical specifications of multimedia Broadcast/Multicast Service for cellular network. However, they are inflexible for group key update, and will cause the core network over-burdened. Hence It is not suitable for Machine Type Communications, especially when mass MTC devices enjoy a specific multimedia Broadcast/Multicast Service. A group key agreement in multimedia service for MTC communications is proposed to overcome the above disadvantages. The scheme could transmit group key information using broadcast messages and reduce the interacting rounds. Analysis of the scheme indicates that it is of backward and forward security and collusion resistance. In addition, the proposal could lower the communication costs to staying constant compared with that of MBMS.

Content Distribution Networks are mandatory components of modern web architectures, with plenty of vendors offering their services. Despite its maturity, new paradigms and architecture models are still being developed in this area. Cloud computing, on the other hand, is a more recent concept which has expanded extremely quickly, with new services being regularly added to cloud management software suites such as OpenStack. The main contribution of this paper is the architecture and the development of an open source CDN that can be provisioned in an on-demand, pay-as-you-go model thereby enabling the CDN as a Service paradigm. We describe our experience with integration of CDNaaS framework in a cloud environment, as a service for enterprise users. We emphasize the flexibility and elasticity of such a model, with each CDN instance being delivered on-demand and associated to personalized caching policies as well as an optimized choice of Points of Presence based on exact requirements of an enterprise customer. Our development is based on the framework developed in the Mobile Cloud networking (MCN) EU FP7 project, which offers its enterprise users a common framework to instantiate and control services. CDNaaS is one of the core support components in this project as is tasked to deliver different type of multimedia content to several thousands of users geographically distributed. It integrates seamlessly in the MCN service life-cycle and as such enjoys all benefits of a common design environment, allowing for an improved interoperability with the rest of the services within the MCN ecosystem.

Social media sites like Flickr, Twitter, YouTube, and Facebook are more and more flourishing with user-thrown pieces like videos, photographs, and multimedia content. Information about the real-world events are made available in social media. Problem arises when people search for multimedia content and extract information from the huge data. Usually, users are interested in gathering information about social events which may be a game, a conference, dance show, music concert, etc. Automatic event detection is one of the interesting subproblems. Our proposed methodology uses the context allied with social media content, the user-provided tags, and significant terms for each event from the Internet as features for event detection.
