Social media sites like Flickr, Twitter, YouTube, and Facebook are more and more flourishing with user-thrown pieces like videos, photographs, and multimedia content. Information about the real-world events are made available in social media. Problem arises when people search for multimedia content and extract information from the huge data. Usually, users are interested in gathering information about social events which may be a game, a conference, dance show, music concert, etc. Automatic event detection is one of the interesting subproblems. Our proposed methodology uses the context allied with social media content, the user-provided tags, and significant terms for each event from the Internet as features for event detection. Our proposed method groups the images to events simultaneously. © Springer India 2014.

The continuous growth of energy consumption has become a critical issue globally. According to the international energy agency, the energy consumed in residential and commercial buildings contributed about 40% of the total energy consumption in 2014. In recent years, building energy management has become a popular research topic. The techniques used in automatic control have evolved from static schedules specified manually into real-time sensing through wireless sensor network. The demand for a dedicated platform for building energy management systems has emerged later. Many proposed platforms focused on the high-level architecture and were based on existing standards and technologies. However, there was little research about the fundamental aspects of the infrastructure. In this paper, we propose a scheduling mechanism for the fundamental infrastructure based on the distributed pinwheel model. It addresses the issues of distributed real-time computing, and provides a more predictable system behavior for potential improvement of energy consumption of the infrastructure itself. Unlike the original distributed pinwheel model, we also take network delay into account, and present an adaptive method to mitigate the effects of variable network delay. The simulation results suggest that the total end-to-end delay can be reduced to 20% or lower for more than half of the input task sets without the presence of variable network delay. The adaptive method shows an improvement of 10.06% to 61.16% with the presence of variable network delay.

ISDB-T (Integrated Services Digital Broadcasting-Terrestrial) digital television broadcasters would send a special signal to wake up receivers when an emergency alert is advised. The wake-up procedure is defined as EWS (Emergency Warning System) and the trigger is sent in a single bit of the control message called TMCC (Transmission and Modulation Configuration Control). Wrong determination of the trigger leads to a false alarm and increases power consumption while idle. In this paper, a method of determining the EWS wake-up trigger is proposed by assuming the broadcasters do not change TMCC message except for the trigger when the broadcaster advises an emergency alert. For reducing the false alarm, this paper proposes using the TMCC parity for the reliable determination of the trigger. Results showed the proposed method was almost free from a false alarm.

We present and evaluate a procedure that utilizes mobility and throughput prediction to prefetch video streaming data in integrated cellular and WiFi networks. The effective integration of such heterogeneous wireless technologies will be significant for supporting high performance and energy efficient video streaming in ubiquitous networking environments. Our evaluation is based on trace-driven simulation considering empirical measurements and shows how various system parameters influence the performance, in terms of the number of paused video frames and the energy consumption. The proposed approach has been implemented in an Android-based prototype.

Self-Management of services and devices in Internet of Things (IoT) systems and Machine-to-Machine (M2M) systems is a fundamental challenge due to the large number of devices and context-aware services. In this paper, we present the mechanism to automatically manage the services and devices according to context of the system and location of the devices. The developed mechanism is parts of WuKong middleware, which is a middleware for distributed and autonomous IoT/M2M systems. To support autonomous service management, we develop the device identification mechanism, the mechanism for device status monitoring, device management, and service reconfiguration. This paper presents the location and context-aware service configuration mechanism in WuKong middleware. The mechanism includes the services to manage the devices, to manage the radio interfaces on devices, to learn the location of devices, to load the service remotely and dynamically. The developed mechansims are implemented and experimented on Arduino-compatible devices to evaluate its performance.

The number and variety of applications for mobile devices continue to grow. However, the resources on mobile devices including computation and storage do not keep pace with the growth. Incorporating the computation capacity on cloud servers into mobile computing has been desired. However, there are numbers of challenging issues to realize it. In this work, we design and implement an elastic computation framework to take advantage the computation capacity on connected devices, to meet the computation demands of ever growing mobile applications. The computation framework enables resource-aware workload migration between mobile devices and connected computers. The framework was experimented and evaluated on cuckoos framework with Android applications, where communication and computation resources are taken into account. The experiments show that the application can be executed with dynamic allocated resources, either local or remote, to enhance its performance. With the elastic framework, the runtime environment can allocate local and remote resources to mobile applications with resource-aware policies.

The emphasis today in Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) is on moving existing monolithic telecommunications services like the IP multimedia Subsystem (IMS) as a unit to a virtualized infrastructure platform. Yet the next step will involve breaking down the monolithic services into smaller, more modular units called Virtualized Network Functions (VNFs) that can be quickly combined into cloud-based innovative service offerings. Current cloud Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) API support for NFV deployments requires extensive configuration despite virtualization, exactly the antithesis of the cloud "as a service" model. This won't support the innovative combination of services envisioned for the next step. Our approach involves enhancing the cloud IaaS networking API to support more dynamic network services. We illustrate this approach with an API for L2 services deployment. We describe a new VNF service, JiffyVPN, which allows a customer to provision an IPsec VPN with Layer-2 (L2) service between data centers or from branch offices to the data center, through a few clicks on a self-serve customer portal. We developed an enhancement to the OpenStack Neutron API, called the Gateway API, that supports stitching virtual L2 networks together, and deployed JiffyVPN on top of it. We conclude with a discussion regarding developing API support for VNFs, and the need for a well-designed set of abstractions and their API implementation.

The services carried by the Internet have undergone tremendous change over the past decades, along with the emergence of multimedia services and cloud computing, etc. However, there is little change in the framework of network designed primarily for reliable end-to-end communication, which is not suitable for these new services, resulting in poor performance of services and inefficient utilization of network resource. In this paper, we propose a network resource allocation scheme base on SDN(Software Defined Network) an emerging network paradigm, to provide Quality of Service(Qo S) support for various services while balance the link load in the network avoiding congestion and idleness. And we demonstrate its performance via experiments under our SDN test bed.

User's multimedia interaction is facing a paradigm shift from 2D to 3D videos. Nonetheless, it is still difficult to watch 3D videos with a mobile device. With current technological barrier in wireless networking, it is hardly imagined that the timely transmission for a 3D video streaming could be feasible with the mobile device. In this paper, we propose ReMA, a novel 3D video distribution system based on a lightweight compression, a link-adaptive transmission scheme, and a network-side assistance for processing capability. ReMA consists of a 3D data transmitter, a receiver, and an infrastructure for generating and distributing 3D videos. We implemented the proposed system in a real test-bed and conducted a thorough empirical evaluation study. Based on the empirical results, the proposed system presents a great promise in streaming 3D video in real-time to the mobile device.

Pedestrian dead reckoning plays an important role in indoor pedestrian localization applications. Although this approach has a notable advantage that no extra infrastructure is required, it also suffers an issue known as the drift, which means the estimation errors accumulate and ultimately may make the result unreliable. In this paper, we propose a circular inference method applying online learning in order to reduce such drift errors. Map information is used as prior knowledge and identified land marks are used as triggers for learning processing. A multidimensional optimization algorithm is designed and used in learning phase to efficiently tune the estimation parameters. On the basis of the design we implement an end system running on smartphones and use it in the evaluation experiments. The results show that the proposed method can effectively improve the accuracy and reliability of the localization system.
