Many context-aware smartphone applications depend on specific conditions for gathering data, e. g., specific phone locations or orientations. As a result, the significant overhead of keeping all this information in mind is imposed on their users. Besides averting the interest of potential application users, these requirements defeat one of the main purposes of these mobile data collection, namely simplifying life through mobile sensing applications. This is not a problem that solely affects the users, but the developers of the applications alike. As even the most diligent users often do not manage to follow the strict data collection guidelines at all times, errors in the collected data may ultimately lead to the provision of wrong services and thus to degraded application quality. In this paper, we thus present a solution to determine the location of a phone in order to support context-aware applications. It offers the possibility to detect the position of the phone with an accuracy of 97%, as well as being able to correlate it with the type of the location of the user. Our system can be used to improve existing mobile sensing applications by facilitating various services that depend on the phone location, e. g., seamlessly adapting the ringtone volume or setting a phone's flight mode.

Location-based social networking platform (e.g., Foursquare), as a popular scenario of participatory sensing system that collects heterogeneous information (such as tips and photos) of venues from users, has attracted much attention recently. In this paper, we study the distribution of these information and their relationship, based on a large dataset crawled from Foursquare, which consists of 2,728,411 photos, 1,212,136 tips and 148,924,749 check-ins of 190,649 venues, contributed by 508,467 users. We analyze the distribution of user-generated check-ins, venue photos and venue tips, and show interesting category patterns and correlation among these information. In addition, we make the following observations: i) Venue photos in Foursquare are able to significantly make venues more social and popular. ii) Users share venue photos highly related to food category. iii) Category dynamics of venue photo sharing have similar patterns as that of venue tips and user check-ins at the venues. iv) Users tend to share photos rather than tips. We distribute our data and source codes under the request of research purposes (email: ***@***).

Modern smartphones permit to run a large variety of applications, i.e. multimedia, games, social network applications, etc. However, this aspect considerably reduces the battery life of these devices. A possible solution to alleviate this problem is to offload part of the application or the whole computation to remote servers, i.e. Cloud computing. The offloading cannot be performed without considering the issues derived from the nature of the application (i.e. multimedia, games, etc.), which can considerably change the resources necessary to the computation and the type, the frequency and the amount of data to be exchanged with the network. This work shows a framework for automatically building models for the offloading of mobile applications based on evolutionary algorithms and how it can be used to simulate different kinds of mobile applications and to analyze the rules generated. To this aim, a tool for generating mobile datasets, presenting different features, is designed and experiments are performed in different usage conditions in order to demonstrate the utility of the overall framework.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is expected to interconnect a myriad of devices. Emerging networking and backend support technology not only has to anticipate this dramatic increase in connected nodes, but also a change in traffic patterns. Instead of bulk data such as file sharing or multimedia streaming, IoT devices will primarily exchange real-time sensory and control data in small but numerous messages. Often cloud services will handle these data from a huge number of devices, and hence need to be extremely scalable to support conceivable large-scale IoT applications. To this end, we present a system architecture for IoT cloud services based on the Constrained Application Protocol (CoAP), which is primarily designed for systems of tiny, low-cost, resource-constrained IoT devices. Along with our system architecture, we systematically evaluate the performance of the new Web protocol in cloud environments. Our Californium (Cf) CoAP framework shows 33 to 64 times higher throughput than high-performance HTTP Web servers, which are the state of the art for classic cloud services. The results substantiate that the low overhead of CoAP does not only enable Web technology for low-cost IoT devices, but also significantly improves backend service scalability for vast numbers of connected devices.

Social media streams, such as Twitter, Facebook, and Sina Weibo, have become essential real-time information resources with a wide range of users and applications. The rapidly increasing amount of live information in social media streams has important societal and marketing values for large corporations and government organizations. There is a strong need for effective techniques for data gathering and content analysis. This problem is particularly challenging due to the short and conversational nature of posts, the huge data volume, and the increasing heterogeneous multimedia content in social media streams. Moreover, as the focus of "conversation" often shifts quickly in social media space, the traditional keywords based approach to gather data with respect to a target brand is grossly inadequate. To address these problems, we propose a multi-faceted brand tracking method that gathers relevant data based on not just evolving keywords, but also social factors (users, relations and locations) as well as visual contents as increasing number of social media posts are in multimedia form. For evaluation, we set up a large scale microblog dataset (Brand-Social-Net) on brand/product information, containing 3 million microblogs with over 1.2 million images for 100 famous brands. Experiments on this dataset have demonstrated that the proposed framework is able to gather a more complete set of relevant brand-related data from live social media streams. Smart mobile devices are already used for everyday communication between people. They have become ubiquitous devices for receiving and sharing important information, but they poses limited capability of storing and processing multimedia content. Considering that mobile devices will always have these mentioned limitations, the proposed solution is to use collaborative, adaptive multimedia content delivery and the cloud computing technology. In order to gain increased perception of quality of m-learning systems, the proposed model delivers three services for selection, transcoding and authoring multimedia content, which should be hosted by SaaS cloud computing model. The proposed model for collaborative and adaptive multimedia content delivery will provide the mobile learners with cloud-based services. These services will facilitate the delivery of the preferred multimedia content across heterogeneous network to various types of mobile devices that learners are using. The advantage of the proposed framework is proved by using a sample mobile application for our case study, which estimates the operation of the service for multimedia content selection and authoring service.

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) have been widely deployed in monitoring and surveillance in recent years, and have dramatically changed the related methodologies and technologies. Despite WSN's popularity, the sensor nodes in WSN have very limited computing resources and power supply, and thus the maximization of network life has become a very critical issue. In the newly-emerging Wireless multimedia Sensor Network (WMSN), the high volume of sensed video data needs to be compressed before transmission. Different video coding schemes have been developed and applied to wireless multimedia sensor networks, and there exists a tradeoff between the power consumption of data compression and that of data transmission. Video compression will reduce the amount of data that needs to be transmitted and in turn the amount of power consumed for data transmission;however, too much video compression will consume excessive power which outweighs the power savings on data transmission. Thus, how to reach an optimized balance between compression and transmission and maximize network life becomes a challenging research issue. In this paper, we propose mathematical models which describe power consumptions of data compression and transmission of sensor nodes in hexagon-shaped clusters. Under the proposed model, we have achieved the optimized data compression ratio which minimizes the overall power consumption of the whole cluster.

Energy-efficient task scheduling is a fundamental issue in many application domains, such as energy conservation for mobile devices and the operation of green computing data centers. Modern processors support dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS) on a per-core basis, i.e., the CPU can adjust the voltage or frequency of each core. As a result, the core in a processor may have different computing power and energy consumption. To conserve energy in multi-core platforms, we propose task scheduling algorithms that leverage per-core DVFS and achieve a balance between performance and energy consumption. We consider two task execution modes: the batch mode, which runs jobs in batches;and the online mode in which jobs with different time constraints, arrival times, and computation workloads co-exist in the system. For tasks executed in the batch mode, we propose an algorithm that finds the optimal scheduling policy;and for the online mode, we present a heuristic algorithm that determines the execution order and processing speed of tasks in an online fashion. The heuristic ensures that the total cost is minimal for every time interval during a task's execution.

The increasing usage of cloud computing, along with the proliferation of mobile devices and the demand for multimedia services, are changing the life style of users and creating new opportunities to providers and clients. multimedia data will account for up to 90% of all Internet traffic in a few years, where most of the content will be created, shared, and accessed by mobile smartphones/tablets (carried by humans or placed in vehicles). However, this novel mobile multimedia era imposes new challenges for the networks, content, terminals, and humans, and must overcome problems associated, for instance, with high congestion, low scalability, fast battery consumption, and poor user experience. This paper discusses recent advances and challenges in human-centric mobile multimedia cloud computing approaches. On the one hand, Internet cloud will ubiquitously enrich multimedia mobile environments with more advanced and powerful features, including high processing and memory, scalability, availability, and adaptability. On the other hand, mobile devices will efficiently cooperate with each other to form mobile clouds that offload the Internet clouds from tasks that the latter cannot perform in a timely or efficient manner, including video and resource sharing. Both Internet and mobile clouds will be efficiently used to adapt/optimize multimedia flows to a single user or a group of users according to the current network conditions, context-awareness, content characteristics, device capabilities, and human experience.

The unprecedented advancement in multimedia technology and the upsurge of social networking as an indispensable part of day to day life, has brought forth an unimaginable necessitate for voluminous data transfer over inherently insecure networks. Besides security, another major aspect today is to design lightweight encryption schemes which can perform effectively on handheld devices like mobiles and provide security as per the requirements of the applications. The standard encryption schemes address the security aspect of only plain textual data and are not suitable for securing voluminous real-time data transfers, having significant level of redundancies, over resource-constrained environments. Focusing on this requirement introduced as the need of the hour, the paper proposes novel lightweight encryption schemes, based on conditional approach, using simple S-Box look-ups, shifting, negation and XORing (standard Exclusive OR) as the basic building blocks. To address the issue of significant redundancy present in the plain text, pixel position has been introduced as one of the parameters in the encryption process. The results of empirical analysis demonstrate the strength of the proposed schemes and they perform equally well for worst case scenarios (white image). The comparative results demonstrate complete removal of redundancies in the proposed cipher with much higher computational efficiency as compared to the standard schemes like AES. © Springer India 2014.
