The unprecedented advancement in multimedia technology and the upsurge of social networking as an indispensable part of day to day life, has brought forth an unimaginable necessitate for voluminous data transfer over inherently insecure networks. Besides security, another major aspect today is to design lightweight encryption schemes which can perform effectively on handheld devices like mobiles and provide security as per the requirements of the applications. The standard encryption schemes address the security aspect of only plain textual data and are not suitable for securing voluminous real-time data transfers, having significant level of redundancies, over resource-constrained environments. Focusing on this requirement introduced as the need of the hour, the paper proposes novel lightweight encryption schemes, based on conditional approach, using simple S-Box look-ups, shifting, negation and XORing (standard Exclusive OR) as the basic building blocks. To address the issue of significant redundancy present in the plain text, pixel position has been introduced as one of the parameters in the encryption process. The results of empirical analysis demonstrate the strength of the proposed schemes and they perform equally well for worst case scenarios (white image). The comparative results demonstrate complete removal of redundancies in the proposed cipher with much higher computational efficiency as compared to the standard schemes like AES. © Springer India 2014.

Today, mobile devices like smartphones and tablets are becoming more powerful and exhibit enhanced 3D graphics performance. However, the overall computing power of these devices is still limited regarding usage scenarios like photo-realistic gaming, enabling an immersive virtual reality experience or real-time processing and visualization of big data. To overcome these limitations application streaming solutions are constantly gaining focus. The idea is to transfer the graphics output of an application running on a server or even a cluster to a mobile device, conveying the impression that the application is running locally. User inputs on the mobile client side are processed and sent back to the server. The main criteria for successful application streaming are low latency, since users want to interact with the scene in near real-time, as well as high image quality. Here, we present a novel application framework suitable for streaming applications from high-end machines to mobile devices. Using real-time ETC1 compression in combination with a distributed rendering architecture we fully leverage recent progress in wireless computer networking standards (IEEE 802.11ac) for mobile devices, achieving much higher image quality at half the latency compared to other in-home streaming solutions.

The use of new technologies along with the popularity of social networks has given the power of anonymity to the users. The ability to create an alter-ego with no relation to the actual user, creates a situation in which no one can certify the match between a profile and a real person. This problem generates situations, repeated daily, in which users with fake accounts, or at least not related to their real identity, publish news, reviews or multimedia material trying to discredit or attack other people who may or may not be aware of the attack. These acts can have great impact on the affected victims’ environment generating situations in which virtual attacks escalate into fatal consequences in real life. In this paper, we present a methodology to detect and associate fake profiles on Twitter social network which are employed for defamatory activities to a real profile within the same network by analysing the content of comments generated by both profiles. Accompanying this approach we also present a successful real life use case in which this methodology was applied to detect and stop a cyberbullying situation in a real elementary school. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014.

Content-centric networking has been recently proposed to define a new networking architecture where the content itself becomes the core of communications rather than the address or location. In terms of availability and efficient delivery of data, content-centric networking has been the main focus to a great extent. Currently, the content-centric networking architecture for the wireless environment is not yet clearly defined. In this paper, we propose a possible architecture for multimedia content delivery in the wireless environment, which is based on content-centric networking. We also present simulation results to show that the proposed architecture works well in the wireless network.

In this paper, HSV color histogram and local maximum edge binary patterns (LMEBP) joint histogram are integrated for content-based image retrieval (CBIR). The local region of image is represented by LMEBP, which are evaluated by taking into consideration the magnitude of local difference between the center pixel and its neighbors. This LMEBP differs from the existing LBP in a manner that it extracts the information based on distribution of edges in an image. Further, the joint histogram is constructed between uniform two rotational invariant first three LMEBP patterns. The color feature is extracted by calculating the histogram on hue (H), saturation (S), and value (V) spaces. The experimentation has been carried out for proving the worth of our algorithm. It is further mentioned that the database considered for experiment is Corel-1K. The results after being investigated show a significant improvement in terms of their evaluation measures as compared to previously available spatial and transform domain methods on their respective databases. © Springer India 2014.

Routing and resource allocation are two major research directions for cloud computing, especially for improving the response time in multimedia cloud computing. In this paper, we propose network model for the transmission time between data centers and design routing algorithms for multimedia cloud computing. We further propose resource allocation with the goal to minimize the resource cost. We show some first simulation results of our proposed algorithms.

The computing power of mobile devices has grown significantly in recent days. People begin bringing as many applications as possible to these devices. Virtualization is exactly one of these examples. However, we found most of the research on mobile virtualization lacks an appropriate evaluation at the hardware level. In this paper, we would like to study the performance of oPT, a newly proposed mechanism of memory management for mobile virtualization, at the hardware level with a comparison to the most common mechanism. However, it is complicated and costly to integrate oPT into existing hardware architectures. We instead present a simple yet efficient method based on FPGAs to verify the feasibility of oPT and evaluate its performance with several metrics. The results suggest that the hardware component adopted in oPT can operate at a frequency up to 2.3 times faster than the one in the original mechanism. When running at the same frequency, oPT can reduce the translation time by 64.7% with an increase of 2.5% in the resource usage of the FPGA. In addition to the measurement of the translation speed, the prototypes can further serve as the physical models for measuring power consumption.

In this paper, we propose and assess SWAPN, a useful, novel and intelligent dream tool to study the impending multimedia technologies and to help the visually challenged as well as aged persons to overcome their disabilities. Recently, there were many research studies conducted related to human-machine systems available to help visually challenged people to reassure themselves to the outside world as normal individuals. We also propose a novel methodology to explore the uses of multimedia tools using Image Sensor, Camera, Laser Sensor, Inductive Proximity Sensor and Hand-held device to develop a ubiquitous environment to model the Human Computer Interaction (HCI) system. This methodology embraces the advantage of present Smartphone technology to help the people who are visually challenged from birth and also the aged persons who suffer from either full or partial vision loss. The newly introduced features like motion detection and feature extraction capabilities of SWAPN are assessed by realizing the implementation of machine-to-machine features for the modest usage. We have also inherited the usage of social networking for the visually challenged. Often more useful features like warning detection systems which notify the user the present weather conditions and inform for sudden changes in temperatures also been included. © 2014 IEEE.

Since the use of wireless devices in the already overcrowded ISM bands had been further growing recently. Realization of wireless communications in TV white space is one of the most urgent research and development issues to accommodate rapidly increasing wireless access. In order to ensure avoidance of interference from secondary users to primary users, adoption of White Space Database (WSDB) is one of the important strategies. In this paper, we introduce the concept of IETF Protocol to Access White Space Database (PAWS), and use it to connect a WSDB and dynamic allocating spectrum resources and monitoring the use of those resources in the IEEE 802.11af (White-Fi) networks. We have implemented the PAWS API and WSDB for spectrum allocation and show that mechanism operations with an experimental IEEE 802af network, which enables White-Fi Access Point (AP) to share the TVWS in a fine geolocation and timescale. Entrepreneurs, infrastructure providers, service operators and carriers are targeting the service, application and infrastructure unification over an all Internet Protocol (IP) platform while providing access technology convergence. Distinctive business goals and varying service logic in addition to distinctive resource requirements alongside scalability and extensibility over such converged infrastructure has to be addressed. Intra/Inter domain knowledge set over distinctive planes (application, service, control and network/transport) has to be induced, inherited and overridden. A decision- making system supporting dynamicity is required to handle such a platform effectively and efficiently. Multi Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) is used for decision- making framework. Ontology is used to model the structural hierarchy and semantics capturing. Ontology's inability to capture uncertainty is complemented by Bayesian mapping. Software Defined Network Controller (SDNC) on the basis of the proposed framework is developed for multimedia call/request/session routing by using embedded hardware. System exhibits greater throughput with lesser call/session/request dropping probability at the expense of a susceptible delay. Moreover system latency with and without SDNC in provisioning and outsourcing modes are compared and evaluated. (C) 2014 Published by Elsevier B.V.
