The proliferation of multimedia applications in embedded systems has led to a research focus on optimizing the energy consumption of these applications without significantly degrading the execution time and adhering to data processing deadline constraints. To maximize optimization potential, phase-based tuning methodologies specialize system configurations to different phases of application execution with respect to design constraints. multimedia applications are ideal candidates for phase-based tuning since these applications exhibit variable execution characteristics. In this paper, we propose a phase-based tuning methodology for multimedia applications that leverages application characteristics to determine the best cache configurations for different phases of execution. Results reveal that phase-based tuning for multimedia applications determines cache configurations within 1% of the optimal on average and yields an average energy delay product savings of 29%.

With the proliferation of connectivity enabled smartphones and the huge amount of data that everyday users generate through Web 2.0, the Internet is becoming bigger and bigger. The possibility to search for objects and users' profiles is at the base of the Internet of Everything paradigm. Surprisingly, the more we expand our interconnecting possibilities, the more we are interested in local, context-related information. In this paper we describe this envisioned scenario also discussing cutting edge technology that could soon turn this vision into reality.

The next generation network requires a suitable QoS that can increase number of users and revenues. The IMS (IP multimedia Subsystem) import new taxation strategy flow based and QoS management policy-based. The QoS management poses a competition in terms of limitations of physical resources and the onset of congestion, which encourages more organisaton to look for management solutions other than DiffServ and IntServ. The NSIS (Next Steps in Signaling) appears as a magical solution that couples DiffServ and IntServ with other properties of control traffic to validate these properties and shows the integration with IMS we present this article. Our goal, in this article, is give an idea about a Framework that coupling NSIS and policy-based management in IMS, and experimentally verify results.

Quality of Service (QoS) -- based bandwidth allocation plays a key role in real-time computing systems and applications such as voice IP, teleconferencing, and gaming. Likewise, customer services often need to be distinguished according to their service priorities and requirements. In this paper, we consider bandwidth allocation in the networks of a cloud carrier in which cloud users' requests are processed and transferred by a cloud provider subject to QoS requirements. We present a QoS-guaranteed approach for bandwidth allocation that satisfies QoS requirements for all priority cloud users by using Open vSwitch, based on software defined networking (SDN). We implement and test the proposed approach on the Global Environment for networking Innovations (GENI). Experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

The Polish Grid computing infrastructure was established during the PL-Grid project (2009-2012). The main purpose of this Project was to provide the Polish scientists with an IT basic platform, allowing them to conduct interdisciplinary research on a national scale, and giving them transparent access to international grid resources via international grid infrastructures. Currently, the infrastructure is maintained and extended within a follow-up PLGrid Plus project (2011-2014). Its main objective is to increase the potential of the Polish Science by providing necessary IT services for research teams in Poland, in line with European solutions. The paper presents several examples of the domain-specific computational environments, developed within the Project. For particular environments, specialized IT solutions are prepared, i.e. dedicated software implementation and infrastructure adaptation, suited for particular researchers groups' demands.

In recent years, Cloud technology has revolutionized the way services are delivered to end-users. The advent of truly mobile computing in the form of smart phones and tablets has also driven the demand for Cloud resources in order to compensate for the inherent lack of local resources on these devices. Furthermore, modern mobile devices are equipped with multiple network interfaces and in combination with the rapid deployment of wireless networks, it is expected that they will always have Internet connectivity and access to Cloud resources. In this paper we will focus on traffic management for interactive multimedia services accessed by a mobile user by means of dynamic migration of a Virtual Machine. Network performance measurements are taken from a network of virtualization-enabled hosts that perform live migrations of a Virtual Machine which hosts multimedia content. The data is used as input to an equation that determines whether a migration would be beneficial in terms of traffic localization based on a user's mobility characteristics and network usage patterns. The contribution of this paper lies in the proposed mechanism of managing traffic for interactive services in the context of mobile cloud computing. This helps alleviate the increased network costs introduced by dynamic migrations driven by Quality of Service parameters and may result in increased network traffic for the benefit of improved QoS.

Voice communications over the Internet are growing rapidly thanks to faster Internet and mobile networks. Although multimedia communication techniques such as voice over IP (VoIP) have been using UDP, TCP is gaining gradual popularity since it enables passage through network address translators (NATs) and firewalls. Many researches have been done on real-time communications using TCP, which indicates the possibility of achieving low delay communications over TCP. However, little mention has been made of user-perceived voice quality over TCP. This paper presents a VoIP system using multiple TCP connections. We conducted thorough voice quality evaluations over these connections by changing network and VoIP application parameters. Our evaluations show that voice communications can be achieved in 10% packet loss rate and 100 ms round-trip time environments if the number of TCP connections, the sending unit and the decoding buffer size are optimized. We also provide optimal parameter guidelines for achieving high quality voice communications over multiple TCP connections.

With the introduction of social networks like Facebook, Google+, and Twitter, the ways of sharing impressions of events has changed. We try to go a step further than social networks do. We offer the possibility to share events live with friends and colleagues. Our approach is based on semantic search in unstructured peer-to-peer (P2P) networks for querying content in mobile ad hoc networks and dynamic adaptive streaming over HTTP for the actual delivery of the real-time media impressions.

Pedestrian dead reckoning plays an important role in indoor pedestrian localization applications. Although this approach has a notable advantage that no extra infrastructure is required, it also suffers an issue known as the drift, which means the estimation errors accumulate and ultimately may make the result unreliable. In this paper, we propose a circular inference method applying online learning in order to reduce such drift errors. Map information is used as prior knowledge and identified land marks are used as triggers for learning processing. A multidimensional optimization algorithm is designed and used in learning phase to efficiently tune the estimation parameters. On the basis of the design we implement an end system running on smartphones and use it in the evaluation experiments. The results show that the proposed method can effectively improve the accuracy and reliability of the localization system.

Developing mobile multimedia cloud services over heterogeneous wireless networks poses a challenge for service continuity. The degraded link quality and connection losses are likely to happen and these may affect service execution times and service availability in mobile cloud computing scenarios. To improve handoff quality and minimize utilized bandwidth, we propose a self-adaption handoff scheme for multimedia services in mobile cloud computing. The proposed scheme uses multipath transmission for media flows, and consists of the duplicate mode and the effective mode, which are changed according to the network condition. Analytic model and simulation are developed to investigate our new scheme. The results demonstrate that the new mechanism can realize seamless handoff for multimedia services in cloud, reduce the packet loss rate, as well as obtain a more efficient use of the scarce wireless bandwidth and the power of mobile devices.
