Over the last decade, information security has been considered a key issue in e-Learning design. Although security requirements can be met with advanced technological approaches and these solutions offer feasible methods in many e-Learning scenarios, on-line assessment activities usually show specific issues that cannot be solved with technology alone. In addition, security vulnerabilities in on-line assessment impede the development of an overall model devoted to manage secure on-line assessment. In this paper, we propose an innovative approach to enhance technological security solutions with trustworthiness. To this end, we endow previous trustworthiness models with prediction features by composing trustworthiness modeling and assessment, normalization methods, history sequences, and neural network-based approaches. In order to validate our approach, we present a peer-to-peer on-line assessment model carried out in a real online course.

The purpose of this study is to develop a non-invasive sleep monitoring system to distinguish sleep disturbances based on multiple sensors. Unlike clinical sleep monitoring which records biological information such as EEG, EOG, and EMG, in this study, we aim to identify occurrences of events from a sleep environment. A device with an infrared depth sensor, a RGB camera, and a four-microphone array is used to detect three types of events: motion events, lighting events, and sound events. Given streams of depth signals and color images, we build two background models to detect movements and lighting effects, and audio signals are scored simultaneously. Moreover, we classify events by an epoch approach algorithm and provide a graphical sleep diagram for browsing corresponding video clips. Experimental results in sleep condition show the efficiency and reliability of our system, and it is convenient and cost-effective to be used in home context.

In mobile sensor networks (MSNs), since sensor nodes and wireless networks are highly resource constrained, and it is highly required to manage sensor data in flexible and efficient manners. Under the MEXT research project. The Grand-in-Aid Scientific Research (S)(21220002) of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), Japan entitled "Studies on Efficient Data Processing Techniques for Mobile Sensor Networks," we have conducted researches on data management in MSNs. In this paper, we report some of our achievements in a sub-area of this project, which mainly addresses communication protocols for efficient data gathering in MSNs. In particular, we first show our achievements on how to efficiently gather sensor data using mobile sensor nodes in each of sparse and dense environments. We also show our another achievement on how to transmit sensor data assuming an environment where multiple mobile sinks exist.

Content Distribution Networks are mandatory components of modern web architectures, with plenty of vendors offering their services. Despite its maturity, new paradigms and architecture models are still being developed in this area. Cloud computing, on the other hand, is a more recent concept which has expanded extremely quickly, with new services being regularly added to cloud management software suites such as OpenStack. The main contribution of this paper is the architecture and the development of an open source CDN that can be provisioned in an on-demand, pay-as-you-go model thereby enabling the CDN as a Service paradigm. We describe our experience with integration of CDNaaS framework in a cloud environment, as a service for enterprise users. We emphasize the flexibility and elasticity of such a model, with each CDN instance being delivered on-demand and associated to personalized caching policies as well as an optimized choice of Points of Presence based on exact requirements of an enterprise customer. Our development is based on the framework developed in the Mobile Cloud networking (MCN) EU FP7 project, which offers its enterprise users a common framework to instantiate and control services. CDNaaS is one of the core support components in this project as is tasked to deliver different type of multimedia content to several thousands of users geographically distributed. It integrates seamlessly in the MCN service life-cycle and as such enjoys all benefits of a common design environment, allowing for an improved interoperability with the rest of the services within the MCN ecosystem.

Jobs scheduling and load balancing functionalities are crucial for best Grid performance and utilization. In this paper, we present a dynamic and adaptive polyhedron topology-aware Grid load balancing method which we called Tun Grid. Its main objective is the extreme decentralization of the scheduling and the load balancing processes at the lowest processing and networking cost. It ensures load balancing through an adaptive local neighborhood propagation strategy of overload. Tun Grid was experimented using the Grid Sim simulator and compared to other methods. Experimental results are presented and discussed.

Routing in mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) is an extremely challenging issue due to the features of MANETs. In this paper, we present a novel bio-inspired hybrid routing protocol (B-iHRP) supporting multimedia delivery based on zone routing framework, ant colony optimization (ACO) and physarum autonomic optimization (PAO). B-iHRP divides network topology into a series of zones subjectively. Within a zone, the route table of central node is proactively maintained by perceptive ants which can sense link status metrics through cross-layer perception to assess the discovered routes. Among zones, perceptive ants are sent to reactively find routes to destinations as well as assess the discovered routes with the metrics by source nodes. Afterwards, B-iHRP uses PAO to select the optimal one from the found routes and optimize autonomically the local routes during the course of multi-zone communication sessions. Simulation results show how B-iHRP can achieve the effective performance compared to existing state-of-the-art algorithms.

Future Internet is foreseen to fully handle a wide range of multimedia services allowing their access trough diverse computing devices such as laptops, TVs, PDAs and 3G mobile phones interconnected via different wire-line and wireless networking technologies. Such a diversification in the computational context reinforces the need of personalized and adaptive media services towards better end-user experience. However, building context-aware media systems raises a number of challenges related to (i) context representation, management and provisioning (ii) binding context situations to services and (iii) performing context-driven service and content adaptation; and this in a dynamic, scalable and interoperable way. In this paper, we present a future Internet architecture1 that enables automated situation-driven media services' discovery, composition and delivery. The proposed solution relies on a new Home-Box layer among which the context-awareness and adaptation features are distributed.

In mobile sensor networks (MSNs), since sensor nodes and wireless networks are highly resource constrained and, it is highly required to manage sensor data in flexible and efficient manners. In this paper, we report some of our achievements in a sub-area of this project, which addresses data transmission for efficient data collection in MSNs. In particular, we first show our achievements on how to efficiently transmit sensor data from sensor nodes to mobile sink nodes considering the fairness and the amount of sensor data collected. Then, we also show our achievements on how to enlarge sensor data collection area and how to reduce communication traffic using mobile sink nodes.

Many applications of machine-to-machine (M2M) based intelligent transportation systems highly rely on the accurate estimation of neighbor map, where neighbor map mentions the locations of all nearby vehicles and pedestrians. To build the neighbor map, it usually integrates multiple sensors, such as GPS, odometer, inertial measurement unit (IMU), laser scanners, cameras, and RGB-D cameras. In this paper, we build a M2M framework to estimate the neighbor map and focus on the improvement of vehicle and pedestrian detection of most popular sensors, camera. We propose a novel grid-based object detection approach and deal with cameras on both roadside units and vehicles. It adapts to the environments and achieves high accuracy, and can be used to improve the performance of neighbor map estimation.

Mobile network traffic is expected to increase dramatically with the proliferation of smart and diverse wireless devices. Moreover, pervasive and complex services such as mobile cloud, device-to-device communications and mobile multimedia consumption will require higher bandwidth and better network coverage. Hence, more spectrum and capacity with small cells and self-organization of heterogeneous networks are posed as vital solutions to address this burgeoning demand. In this paper, we propose a novel distributed self-organization algorithm for single frequency reuse scheme of OFDMA based heterogeneous networks for improving network capacity with self-configuration and self-optimization. Our approach, namely Spectrum-Aware Dynamic Frequency Reuse (SADFR), enables deployment of single frequency network by mitigating interference while increasing capacity in OFDMA HetNets. Moreover, we provide a comparative performance evaluation of our algorithm and elaborate on interference management issues in these systems.
