Wireless multimedia Sensor Networks (WMSNs) are commonly used for communicating sensitive data which help in many important decision makings, so that it is crucial to ensure the received data are not manipulated in transit and originated from the correct source. In the security perspective, however, the characteristics of WMSNs and the nature of multimedia make data authentication schemes more complex, especially for data integrity. In this regard, the aim of this paper is to investigate the feasibility of content-based authentication using image hashing technique as an alternative data authentication scheme in WMSNs. To assess the feasibility, the general requirements for image authentication in WMSNs are discussed in this paper. Additionally, the performance of five selected image hashing algorithms is measured with respect to robustness, sensitivity, and security. By comparing and analyzing the performance of the selected algorithms, this paper provides a perspective on the potential feasibility and limitations as an alternative to the traditional authentication scheme in WMSNs.

Many context-aware smartphone applications depend on specific conditions for gathering data, e.g., specific phone locations or orientations. As a result, the significant overhead of keeping all this information in mind is imposed on their users. Besides averting the interest of potential application users, these requirements defeat one of the main purposes of these mobile data collection, namely simplifying life through mobile sensing applications. This is not a problem that solely affects the users, but the developers of the applications alike. As even the most diligent users often do not manage to follow the strict data collection guidelines at all times, errors in the collected data may ultimately lead to the provision of wrong services and thus to degraded application quality. In this paper, we thus present a solution to determine the location of a phone in order to support context-aware applications. It offers the possibility to detect the position of the phone with an accuracy of 97 %, as well as being able to correlate it with the type of the location of the user. Our system can be used to improve existing mobile sensing applications by facilitating various services that depend on the phone location, e.g., seamlessly adapting the ringtone volume or setting a phone's flight mode.

Social Networks such as Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and LinkedIn have millions of users. These networks are constantly evolving and it is a good source of information, both explicitly and implicitly. The analysis of Social Network mainly focuses on the aspect of social networking with an emphasis on mapping relationships, patterns of interaction between user and content information. One of the common research topics focuses on the centrality measures where useful information of the connected people in the social network is represented in a graph. In this paper, we employed two link-based ranking algorithms to analyze the ranking of the users: HITS (Hyperlink-Induced Topic Search) and PageRank. We constructed Twitter user retweet-relationship graph using 21 days worth of data. Lastly, we compared the ranking sequence of the users in addition to their followers count against the average and also whether they are verified Twitter accounts. From the results obtained, both HITS and PageRank showed a similar trend, and more importantly highlighted the importance of the direction of the edges in this work.

Human mobility models strongly affect the performance in Mobile Ad Hoc Network (MANET). In order to get a more precise estimation of routing performance, it is crucial to construct a more realistic human mobility model. There are three properties investigated in literature which represent the patterns of human mobility. This paper analyzes real human traces and introduces a new property that the inter-hub movement of a human is not straight. We then construct a new random human mobility model called Irregular Orbit Levy-walk (IROL), and verify its ability to capture all of the four properties simultaneously. To investigate the feasibility of IROL, we measure routing performance of real traces, IROL, and other models in MANET on two data sets. In both data sets, IROL describes the real traces the best in terms of throughput and receive rate.

This paper deals with the performance evaluation of deploying an IMS-based media plane interoperability framework. The 3GPP standards describe two possible operating modes based on either a reactive or a proactive approach. We show that both approaches entail some advantages and drawbacks in terms of signaling overhead and call setup times at different ratios of incompatible calls. A prototype implementation of the required elements was carried out in order to use experimental delay contributions. Additionally, the evaluation focuses on the impact of deploying the interoperability solutions over current UMTS and LTE radio access networks.

Today, mobile devices like smartphones and tablets are becoming more powerful and exhibit enhanced 3D graphics performance. However, the overall computing power of these devices is still limited regarding usage scenarios like photo-realistic gaming, enabling an immersive virtual reality experience or real-time processing and visualization of big data. To overcome these limitations application streaming solutions are constantly gaining focus. The idea is to transfer the graphics output of an application running on a server or even a cluster to a mobile device, conveying the impression that the application is running locally. User inputs on the mobile client side are processed and sent back to the server. The main criteria for successful application streaming are low latency, since users want to interact with the scene in near real-time, as well as high image quality. Here, we present a novel application framework suitable for streaming applications from high-end machines to mobile devices. Using real-time ETC1 compression in combination with a distributed rendering architecture we fully leverage recent progress in wireless computer networking standards (IEEE 802.11ac) for mobile devices, achieving much higher image quality at half the latency compared to other inhome streaming solutions.

Several models and architectures are proposed to support multiparty communication over IP. Even if some of these solutions support large number of participants using a conference server, solutions that base their media distribution on peers are adapted to support only small conferencing groups. Deploying multimedia communication based on WebRTC API for more than browser-to-browser connection is not inherently supported and creates new challenge in terms of media stream distribution as well as membership and conferencing operation control overhead. Many conference models presented in this paper can support multi-party communication between end-points over an IP networks. Otherwise, the use of WebRTC technology require direct P2P media negotiation between participants as well as signaling interaction with the Server to manage the conference. This paper introduces two specific conference models adapted to support WebRTC communication between browsers for both small scale and large scale conference. The proposed abstract protocols included in this work implements conference creation and browser joining/leaving and can be mapped using SIP/DSP primitives.

The computing power of mobile devices has grown significantly in recent days. People begin bringing as many applications as possible to these devices. Virtualization is exactly one of these examples. However, we found most of the research on mobile virtualization lacks an appropriate evaluation at the hardware level. In this paper, we would like to study the performance of oPT, a newly proposed mechanism of memory management for mobile virtualization, at the hardware level with a comparison to the most common mechanism. However, it is complicated and costly to integrate oPT into existing hardware architectures. We instead present a simple yet efficient method based on FPGAs to verify the feasibility of oPT and evaluate its performance with several metrics. The results suggest that the hardware component adopted in oPT can operate at a frequency up to 2.3 times faster than the one in the original mechanism. When running at the same frequency, oPT can reduce the translation time by 64.7% with an increase of 2.5% in the resource usage of the FPGA. In addition to the measurement of the translation speed, the prototypes can further serve as the physical models for measuring power consumption.

Continuous monitoring of performance is a necessary tool for the maintenance and improvement of service quality. This applies to the rapidly developing 3D multimedia applications, where acceptability and user experience are the ultimate determinants of value. Satisfying demands in order to achieve high level Quality of Experience is challenging due to Quality of Service requirements and sensitivity of 3D services, especially in case of multi-access devices capable to benefit from wired, wireless and mobile network technologies. Feedback procedures relying on human evaluators are considered to be one of the most important industrial inputs of QoE monitoring. Distortions regarding this input necessitate additional attention due to their ability of making measurement results considerably inaccurate and misleading. This paper aims to observe and analyze the effect of specific environmental information, which is commonly public to the evaluators. The performed series of measurements demonstrates how the awareness of the type of connection can make constant objective quality to result in a rather varying subjective quality. It is also revealed how cognitive dissonance played a role during the evaluation of streaming services on a portable 3D terminal. In order to support understanding evaluator behavior, measurement subjects were distinguished by Level of Comprehension, based on prior technical knowledge and experience.

Energy-efficient task scheduling is a fundamental issue in many application domains, such as energy conservation for mobile devices and the operation of green computing data centers. Modern processors support dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS) on a per-core basis, i.e., the CPU can adjust the voltage or frequency of each core. As a result, the core in a processor may have different computing power and energy consumption. To conserve energy in multi-core platforms, we propose task scheduling algorithms that leverage per-core DVFS and achieve a balance between performance and energy consumption. We consider two task execution modes: the batch mode, which runs jobs in batches, and the online mode in which jobs with different time constraints, arrival times, and computation workloads co-exist in the system. For tasks executed in the batch mode, we propose an algorithm that finds the optimal scheduling policy, and for the online mode, we present a heuristic algorithm that determines the execution order and processing speed of tasks in an online fashion. The heuristic ensures that the total cost is minimal for every time interval during a task's execution.
