In this paper, we experimentally investigate the scope and usefulness of Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling (DVFS) in multimedia servers. For our experiment, we considered four scaling policies, two heterogeneous servers, and two different application scenarios. In the first scenario, we used an IO-Intensive multimedia downloading application while in the second scenario we used a predominately CPU-Intensive application, namely, a video transcoder. We will show that while the advantage of DVFS for IO-Intensive applications is apparent, it is not so for CPU-Intensive applications. The advantage in IO-Intensive applications depends on the selection of frequencies in the machine and the way the CPU speed scales. We observed that the choice of a particular DFVS technique became more consequential when the machine had a wide selection of operation frequencies while a gradual change in the operation frequency was more energy efficient. For CPU-Intensive applications, the use of DVFS was counter productive and the overhead of scaling was not negligible.

Due to the wide availability of huge amount of multimedia data in various modalities such as image and text documents, having a great amount of similarity among them is inevitable. In this paper, we present an efficient model which correlates the similarity among documents belonging to various modalities to achieve cross-media retrieval. Cross-media retrieval is a content based information retrieval system where heterogeneous data is mined to retrieve results of various modalities, i.e., input object and returned results may be of different modalities. For example, text objects can be retrieved as a result to image input. First, features are extracted from multimedia objects by which the objects are labeled. Using the labels, similar documents are grouped to generate multimedia Documents. We construct a cross-media correlation graph with documents as vertices, where positive weight is assigned to every single edge according to the amount of similarity between vertices. The cross-media retrieval system identifies the input document and as a result returns required number of documents with highest weights.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is receiving more and more attention from the research community. The opportunities it creates for new services make it an intriguing technological step. Based on this paradigm, objects (things) become recognizable and gain intelligence by exchanging information with their environment or by having access to information aggregated by other objects. Huge amount of information is expected to be generated, raising at the same time significant concerns: the generated information has to be organized in a meaningful way that facilitates the development of a variety of applications, and it should be protected against unauthorized access. In this paper we design and implement an architecture for retrieving information in the IoT. In the proposed scheme, access control policies limit information retrieval and information is organized in such a way that facilitates the development of context aware services.

In recent years, app store and android market have experienced a significant growth in terms of app numbers. Since we discover 85% of apps through the ranks, it is important to develop effective app ranking analyzing tools. In this paper, we present a method called App Analytic. In our method, we explore correlations of app ranking data about popular social networking sites. Specifically, we analyze correlations between various characteristics of social networking sites on Internet and android market. The results of correlation analysis reveal that there is a strong positive correlation of the number of app downloads with the number of registered users and page rank. We also provide an in-depth analysis on the major factors that impact the correlations.

Microblogging services such as Twitter and Plurk allow users to easily access and share different types of social multimedia (e.g. images and videos) over the online social world. However, information overload happens to users and prohibits them from reaching popular and important digital contents. This paper studies the problem of predicting the popularity of social multimedia which is embedded in short messages of microblogging social networks. Social multimedia exhibits the property that they might be persistently or periodically re-shared and thus their popularity might resurrect at some time and evolve over time. We exploit the idea of concept drift to capture this property. We formulate the problem using classification, and propose to tackle the tasks of Re-share classification and Popularity Score classification. Two categories of features are devised and extracted, including information diffusion and explicit multimedia meta information. We develop a concept drift-based popularity predictor, by ensembling multiple trained classifiers from social multimedia instances in different time intervals. The key lies in dynamically determining the ensemble weights of classifiers. Experiments conducted on the Plurk data show the high accuracy on the popularity classification and the promising results on detecting popular social multimedia.

Summary form only given. 3D HEVC is one of the extensions of HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding), which is the latest video coding standard developed by the Joint Collaborative Team on Video Coding (JCT-VC). The inherent high computing complexity of 3D HEVC handicaps its usage in practical applications. HEVC replaces the macroblock (MB) of H.264 with the largest coding unit (LCU), in which coding units (CUs) of sizes 64 × 64, 32 × 32, 16 × 16, or 8 × 8 pixels are used to build a coding tree unit (CTU). HEVC encoder will traverse the coding modes from the root (the coding level is 0) to the leaves (the coding level is 3) of the CTU. As a result, how to accelerate the encoding process of 3D HEVC with negligible loss of coding efficiency is a hot research topic in the field of video coding. Figure 1 shows the coding level distributions of I 4 0 and I 4 1 , where I j k represents the j-th frame in the k-th GOP. The POC's (picture order counts) of the two frame are P(I 4 0 ) = 4 and P(I 4 1 ) = 12 when GOP size is 8. From Figure 1 we observed that, in B-slices, the distributions of "optimal coding level = zero" for adjacent GOP's are almost the same. We found that the required coding level will be similar when the two CUs have similar depth values. We utilize this correlation to limit the required coding level visiting of a given CU which accelerates the encoding process. In this paper, a fast mode decision algorithm for 3D HEVC, based on the depth information related coding mode similarity, is proposed. According to the experimental results, the proposed algorithm can reduce up to 72% executing time of the overall encoding process, while the loss in coding efficiency is negligible.

Cloud computing is changing the way of developing, deploying and managing applications. However, as typical Internet-based applications, cloud computing services lack carrier-grade signaling control mechanism and cannot guaranty Quality of Service (QoS), which have actually become technical barriers for telecom operator to provide commercial public cloud services. On the other hand, as the core signaling architecture of Next Generation networking (NGN), IP multimedia Subsystem (IMS) is facing the problem of the lack of innovative value-added services. This paper presents an architecture to support cloud computing services over IMS. In the proposed architecture, cloud services are regarded as the general IMS applications and then cloud clients are allowed to access cloud services under the control of Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) signaling and QoS mechanism of IMS. This paper introduces architecture overview and cloud service relevant functional components, and mainly discusses several key issues including cloud notification mechanism, QoS and charging control of IMS-based cloud computing services.

In this paper we explain how efficient delivery of real-time information can be supported in the Publish Subscribe Internet (PSI), a network architecture proposal for the Future Internet. PSI departs from IP thinking with respect to the core abstractions made and the functional organization of the system. PSI places information at the heart of the network layer and decouples the forwarding, path formation and topology management functionalities. This design approach can be highly beneficial for real-time communications, as it enables the network to apply sophisticated mechanisms for multicast tree construction, such as delivery of information over optimal (minimum cost) Steiner trees. Initial experiments with a proof-of-concept implementation of PSI indicate the feasibility of realizing such optimization policies. Our results show that significant bandwidth savings can be achieved at the cost of small, unnoticeable to the end-users, delays in flow establishment.

With the rapid growth of mobile broadband traffic, adopting small cell is a promising trend for operators to improve network capacity with low cost. However, static small cells cannot be flexibly placed to fulfill time/space-varying traffic. The static small cells might stay in idle or under-utilized mode during some time periods, which wastes resources. Therefore, this paper utilizes the mobile small cell concept and studies the deployment problem for mobile small cells. The objective is to maximize the service time provided by mobile small cells for all users. If a finite number of mobile small cells can serve more users for more time, the mobile small cell deployment will have more gains. Specifically, we show an interesting trade-off in the service time maximization. Then, we prove our target problem is NP-hard and propose an efficient mobile small cell deployment algorithm to deal with the trade-off to maximize the total service time. We construct a series of simulations with realistic parameter settings to evaluate the performance of our proposed algorithm. Compared with a static small cell deployment algorithm and a random mobile small cell deployment algorithm, the simulation results show that our proposed scheme can significantly increase the total service time provided for all users.

The rapid developments of smart mobile devices, wireless networks and cloud computing have extended mobile phones with much more functionalities rather than only being used as voice communication tools. Smart mobile devices like camera phones are true "multimedia" devices capable of managing acquisition, processing, transmission, and presentation of multiple modal data such as image, video, audio and text information. They are also ubiquitous social networking devices. Recent rapid development of mobile hardware, wireless network, and cloud computing creates an urgent demand on intelligent and scalable multimedia computing technologies and systems for mobile devices. Multiple sensors, high-resolution screen, more powerful CPU, 3G Internet access, and cloud computing are all necessary enabling technologies to this end. In particular, cloud computing provides powerful supports on computation, storage and networking, which are essential for realizing scalable mobile multimedia applications. The motivation of this study is to timely address the challenges and opportunities in applying advanced multimedia technology, cloud computing, user interface, and graphics techniques to mobile systems.
