We develop architecture of a new N-Screen Service which enables application streaming based on N-Screen services using Personal Video Recorder (PVR) and Named Data networking (NDN) in cloud computing environment. In particular, we propose a framework of N-Screen Services called "ShopMark" based on PVR and NDN technology in cloud computing environment. This service will be provided to user with playback method for their previously recorded multimedia contents which was combined with Advertisement. The user will be able to playback/re-play their multimedia contents, interact with the advertisement and choose their interesting advertised product by scenes. The objective of proposing ShopMark service based on PVR and NDN are to (1) allow user to playback previously recorded multimedia contents anytime with diversity of devices for screen sharing, (2) user are able to easily track and select advertised products in multimedia contents by scenes (e.g. movies scenes, etc), (3) reduce the requested content delay, provide sufficient use of bandwidth and resources (4) overcome limitation of multimedia content and provide efficient approach for content distribution in network and (5) obtain more knowledge and understanding of application NDN. This service will provide an excellent example to show how NDN can offer advantages for the multimedia contents distribution over the internet and provide more space for the development of new other N-Screen services/applications which rely on multimedia contents distribution instead of communication. Mobile ad-hoc network is infrastructure less networks having nodes which can act as a transmitter, router or receiver. MANETs have a dynamic topology where nodes are mobile. To monitor the working of the nodes and nature in which they behave while sending, receiving or forwarding data is classified by a set of rules known as routing protocols. Many routing protocols have been designed to fit the needs of Communication in MANET. These protocols have their own advantages and disadvantages depending in which network they are used. This paper will discuss the evaluation of performances of three routing protocols which include Dynamic Source Routing (DSR), Ad Hoc On-demand Distance Vector (AODV) and Destination Sequenced Distance Vector DSDV. The goal of our work is to study the behavior of above mentioned routing protocols with multimedia traffic source in the network based on the following performance metrics: energy consumption, jitter, packet delivery ratio, and packet drop, control overhead, delay. A simulation model using Network Simulator 2 (NS2) is developed to study the scenario and evaluate them.

The main objective of developing an image watermarking technique is to satisfy both imperceptibility and robustness requirements. To achieve this objective, a hybrid image watermarking scheme based on discrete wavelet transform and singular value decomposition is proposed in this paper. In our approach, the edge information of an image is used to embed the watermark. In addition, we apply the particle swarm optimization algorithm to search the proper value of scaling factor which is used to determine the watermark strength. Experimental results are provided to illustrate the proposed approach is able to withstand a variety of image processing attacks.

The booming multimedia technology is incurring a thriving multi-media data propagation. As multimedia data have become more essential, taking over a major potion of the content processed by many applications, it is important to leverage data mining methods to associate the low-level features extracted from multimedia data to high-level semantic concepts. In order to bridge the semantic gap, researchers have investigated the correlation among multiple modalities involved in multimedia data to effectively detect semantic concepts. It has been shown that multimodal fusion plays an important role in elevating the performance of both multimedia content-based retrieval and semantic concepts detection. In this paper, we propose a novel cluster-based ARC fusion method to thoroughly explore the correlation among multiple modalities and classification models. After combining features from multiple modalities, each classification model is built on one feature cluster, which is generated from our previous work FCC-MMF. The correlation between medoid of a feature cluster and a semantic concept is introduced to identify the capability of a classification model. It is further applied with the logistic regression method to refine ARC fusion method proposed in our previous work for semantic concept detection. Several experiments are conducted to compare the proposed method with other related works and the proposed method has outperform other works with higher Mean Average Precision (MAP). © 2013 ICST.

The demand for multimedia streaming is growing at a phenomenal rate, and data-centre-empowered streaming services are becoming more common nowadays. To better accommodate the demand, the computing power and networking components in data centres are being upgraded regularly, leading to higher energy bills. Many studies have been conducted around reducing the power consumed by data centres, but very little attention has been paid to the data transmissions and the power consumed by the entire system, from the streaming source to the end-user devices. In this paper, we are interested in the power efficiency of multimedia streaming system as a whole. We take on the analysis in three directions: traffic imposed by different streaming protocols, underlay physical network structure, and the network infrastructure (data centre vs. Peer-to-Peer). Three main conclusions drawn from the study are: (1) very insignificant power savings can be achieved by tuning the streaming protocol, router connectivity, or the network infrastructure;(2) significant power savings can be achieved through reducing the idle power of routers and end-user devices;and (3) the energy efficiency of the end-user devices determines whether the Peer-to-Peer (P2P) infrastructure can be a green alternative for data-centre-empowered streaming.

Multidimensional complex query searching is difficult in Peer-to-Peer (P2P) overlay networks due to its characteristics of high scalability, dynamicity and decentralized architecture. On the other side, the P2P applications like searching of multimedia contents in social networking or multiplayer games (that combines the search based on the multiple game scenarios) are becoming popular among the end users. However, due to the large amount of multidimensional data distributed among the thousands of peers, the support of complex queries like similarity or range search is essential as compared to the exact match queries. The existing literature (combining P2P networks and Multidimensional Indexing (MI)) either suffers from the poorer support to the range query or the range query search cost is limited to O(log 2 N) or else it varies with the dimensionality. To address these problems, the traditional MI techniques based on the multiway tree structure (having larger fanout of the tree) can be employed to strengthen the multidimensional range query search capabilities. Based on our observations, a hybrid model combining the m-ary (m is fanout of the tree, m > 2) P2P tree network and MI based on the space containment relationships is preferred to reduce the range query search performance bound to O(log m N). We show an illustrative model in this paper that takes advantages of P2P networks as well as MI based on mary tree to efficiently handle the range queries in the distributed multidimensional applications. However the main focus in our paper is to show how this model improves the search performance of the range queries (bound to O(log m N) independent of the dimensionality of the multidimensional objects.

QoS/QoE becomes increasingly important due to the growing usage of multimedia applications. In this paper, a solution is presented where Multipath TCP which supports the mobility on the transport layer is combined with QoSenabled OSPF for performance-aware route selection. For the latter protocol, a novel extension called QoSxOSPF-LSFM (Load Sensitive Flow Management) is introduced which increases the stability of OSPFxQoS routing by evaluating the link utilization and reducing the frequency of route changes. For comparison, results are shown for the combination of QoSxOSPF-LSFM both with MPTCP as a multipath-capable transport-layer based approach as well as with Mobile IP which is a network layer based mobility approach. Simulation results prove the increase of performance compared to the case without LSFM extensions both for MPTCP and Mobile IP;however, due to the multipath capabilities, MPTCP in all cases outperforms Mobile IP.

The concept of connectedness, as inspired by Social networking Service, is a key factor which participates in changing the way people interact with each other over the Internet. On the other hand, connected world as envisioned by the Internet of Things aims to expand the idea of connectivity to include everything in the physical world to a big network called the Internet. In order to realize the integration between the world of connected people and the world of connected devices, intelligence including semantics and recommendation acts as a key factor to expand the basic communication functionalities to include search, discovery, mashup of new services and filtering. We propose a framework to facilitate the next generation of communication between people and devices, and a preliminary prototype including three modules DPWSim, ThingsGate, ThingsChat along with a use case discussion.

With the development of cloud computing, the resource management in cloud environment and flexible adaptation of services are becoming more and more important. In this paper, we design and implement a resource management system of multimedia conference based on cloud from the perspective of service provider. Media adaptation layer and automatic deployment in management system improve resource utilization and reduce the manual operation to make sure that service provider can provide customers with better services. We can prove its effectiveness through the experiment.

Social networking Services (SNSs) have become a powerful and ubiquitous form of social software with applications in a wide range of fields. Modern SNSs such as Facebook, Google+, and Twitter provide functionality for developers to integrate social features into their applications. Game developers have used this to produce highly popular social games, notably ones created by the company Zynga which reports over 240 million monthly active users. Despite the apparent popularity of social games, there exists a lack of scholarly justification for the inclusion of social networking features in games. Nonetheless, game developers operate under the assumption that these features motivate and engage players, and attract new users. Rather than continue this assumption, this study performed an experiment informed by established approaches to examining the effects of motivation and engagement, designed to measure the effects of in-game social networking features on players. © 2013 IEEE.
