Emerging communication-intensive applications such as multimedia teleconferencing require significant networking resources for efficient operation. In an indoor mobile computing environment, limited wireless resources and user mobility require effective resource reservation algorithms. These requirements demand an efficient advance reservation algorithm in order to minimize handoff call dropping while not compromise network utilization. This paper proposes a design framework and algorithms for advance resource reservation over the wireless link in indoor cellular wireless LANs. The key insight presented in this paper is that different cells in an indoor mobile computing environment behave differently based on location, and need to manage their resources according to their behavior profiles. We present two results: (a) classification of cells and predictive advance reservation based on location and behavior profiles, (b) state-dependent resource reservation based on statistical information.

Recently the FCC opened three 10 MHz bands for unlicensed use. In order to operate in UPCS bands, devices must comply with rules known as the UPCS etiquette. In this paper we study channel sharing between two or more collocated systems under the asynchronous UPCS etiquette. In particular we show that under heavy load individual systems have a tendency to hold the channel for hundreds of milliseconds, thus blocking all traffic in other, competing systems. We have calculated the distribution of the blocking time for two versions (or interpretations) of the UPCS etiquette. The impact of the average blocking time on delay sensitive traffic is discussed and possible improvements achieved through a tradeoff between system capacity and average blocking time are investigated.
This paper seeks to bridge the gap between theory and practice of real-time scheduling in the domain of high speed multimedianetworking. We show that the strict preemptive nature of real-time scheduling leads to more...

The Telecomputing Laboratory, established under the NSF Instrumentation and Laboratory Improvement program, was designed as a dual-use facility to serve students in both digital signal processing (DSP) classes and an innovative "telecomputing" class dealing with distributed multimedia processing. The telecomputing class involves students in computer engineering, electrical engineering, and computer science. In this class, we have brought the basic principles of DSP to students with a limited background in systems through integration with basic principles of networking, multimedia, and computer architecture.

A majority of applications in the near-future are expected to be multimedia-capable. One of the enabling technologies for this to happen is asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) networking. In addition, the exploding use of mobile terminals-laptop computers, personal digital assistants (PDAs) etc.-means there will be more demand to extend these multimedia-capable applications to the mobile terminal. This requires the extension of ATM technology to high-speed wireless communications (>20 Mbps). This is an active area of research around the world. This article describes the technical challenges posed by wireless ATM networking and gives an overview of wireless ATM efforts under way, focusing on specific research projects in the USA and Europe.

We present a network service specifically designed for multimedia servers. It uses a histogram based traffic characterization and an overload control protocol to the eliminate packet losses in the network while providing heterogeneous statistical QoS. The key contribution of our protocol lies in combining open-loop and feedback-based control to: (1) provide heterogeneous QoS to clients in networking environments consisting of switches that may not have any scheduling support; and (2) migrate the functionality of discarding packets, in the event of congestion, to the sources which understand the semantics of the data. The protocol is efficient, makes very few assumptions about the underlying network, is realizable on current switching hardware (supporting FCFS scheduling), and is completely integrated with the architecture of a multimedia server.

Emerging computer network technologies promise to provide distributed multimedia in real-time. Security of real-time video, an important component of distributed multimedia applications, is increasingly becoming one of the major concerns of the computer networking community. This study presents Aegis, a security system for Motion Picture Experts Group (MPEG) compressed video transmissions. Aegis utilizes the concepts of the MPEG video compression algorithm in order to provide an effective and efficient security mechanism. A prototype implementation is used to evaluate its effectiveness in securing video transmissions. Simulation results of Aegis in an asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) technology environment are also presented in order to demonstrate its performance in comparison to traditional encryption/decryption methods.

What's multimedia? Without a clean answer, industries are running towards the virtual target and looking for business chance. However, we have to recognize that a lot of changes have happened if we look back a year ago. Wireless access systems as well as wired access, WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplex) photonic networking, low power consumption technology, low cost Optical Network Unit (ONU), which are essential in going into the multimedia Era, have indicated us new technological directions. In this talk, emerging device technologies will be reviewed.
