To survive in the "world-wide-wait" Internet environment, web surfers are often forced to tradeoff Web object quality for bandwidth by turning off the graphics or Java related objects through the browser configuration. Alternatively, the Web site owner might provide a lower bandwidth version of the Web pages statically. These solutions are not satisfactory because they can not make the best use of the available network bandwidth. To balance between the quality and the bandwidth, we propose a novel layered data model for Web multimedia data. Together with dynamic bandwidth negotiation and a best-fit mechanism, client can get the most appropriate version of a Web request. To make all these transparent to the clients, the layered data model and its associated best-fit mechanism will be implemented in the proxy server. This result is especially important to mobile devices for its limited bandwidth. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2000.

Multi-criteria QoS routing has been regarded by researchers as a vital mechanism to support multimedia communications. Unfortunately, finding a qualified path meeting the multiple criteria is indeed a very difficult problem to solve. Multi-path-constrained routing problems are considered to be NP complete, and most existing QoS routing algorithms are based on maintaining global network state at every node. This paper proposes a multi-constrained flooding-based QoS routing with minimum computation and implementation complexity which relies on local link-state information only. It takes the least delay to establish a QoS connection which meets all QoS requirements and addresses the 'over-reservation' problem of the flooding-based QoS routing in an elegant and efficient manner. We study the performance of the proposed algorithm, in terms of blocking probability, routing overhead, and connection set-up time, through simulation. © 2000 IEEE.

Future wireless networks promise multimedia communication and computing services for both fixed and mobile users. One of the most important challenges of wireless multimedia service for mobile users is maintaining a guaranteed quality of service over end-to-end connections with multiple mobile endpoints. In this paper, we describe a new handoff routing scheme that supports multimedia traffic in a connection-oriented mobile network, such as Mobile ATM. We analyze and compare the performance of the new scheme with respect to three related handoff rerouting schemes for connection-oriented wireless networks. The new technique shows a superior performance in route efficiency and bandwidth consumption for all traffic types, and a smaller handoff delay for delay sensitive traffic.

Delay-constrained multicasting is a fundamental issue in distributed computing and networking. It can be formulated as that of finding a minimum-cost Steiner tree with bounded end-to-end delay along the path from the source node to each destination node and is known to be NP-complete. Several heuristics have been presented for this problem, but most of them require global information in order to construct a multicast tree. Our algorithm uses information only from neighboring nodes, which makes it more practical. The algorithm performs as well as some heuristics using global information.

Technological advances in processor power, networking, telecommunications and multimedia are stimulating the development of applications requiring parallel and distributed computing. This new perspective is enticing research into new design methodologies that view the software as an "intelligent" collection of agents that interact by coordinating knowledge-based processes. We present an actor-based workflow architecture that would fit naturally into distributed heterogeneous environments. The actors combine object-oriented and functional programming in order to make the management of concurrency easier for the user.

Wireless awareness is the capability of networking applications to be aware of the existence and characteristics of wireless links in the communication path. Based on the separation principle, which states that media transfer, control and management are functionally distinct architecture activities, this paper focuses on the wireless awareness architecture and approaches other than adaptation schemes for wireless multimedia applications. The uniqueness of this research is that wireless awareness is studied in such a systematic way that the existence and characteristics of the wireless links are investigated from both the end-host's and the network's point of view. Two approaches are proposed to make multimedia applications wireless aware, i.e. the end-host approach by accessing the device driver of the network interface card and the network approach by instrumenting round-trip-time values of communication entities. Experiments show that, by deploying wireless awareness, the multimedia application can adapt to the wireless networking environment proactively and reactively.

Advances in networking infrastructures, computing capabilities, multimedia processing technologies, and the World Wide Web have brought about real-time delivery of multimedia content through the Internet. While more communication bandwidth is expected in the near future, it is either costly or unavailable to a large number of users. For important applications such as distance learning to be successful, bandwidth limitations must be taken into account. We propose a novel approach using unique characteristics of lecture videos to mitigate their bandwidth requirement for distance learning applications. The experimental results on our test videos demonstrate that when using our approach, the bandwidth requirement is reduced down to only about 4% of the video encoded in MPEG and about 13% of the same video in real format.

In the paper, we propose the pause-and-run approach for k-stream (PARK) multimedia presentations over the Internet to achieve reliable transmission of continuous media. The main characteristics of the PARK approach are as follows: (i) to achieve reliable transmission of continuous media, PARK adopts TCP instead of UDP; (ii) since the slow-start scheme is embedded in TCP, a novel flow adaptation scheme is proposed to reduce the overhead of the network and end hosts. The server adapts its transmission rates to the buffer situation of the client and prevents the client's buffers from overflow and underflow as much as possible; (iii) with the provision of multiple-stream synchronization and multi-level adaptation control, the client achieves smooth multimedia presentations and achieves graceful presentation degradation when the resources are insufficient.

Position location of mobile terminals is one of the key and vital services for enhanced network performance. A variety of services may be offered when position location is deployed, such as emergency-call assistance, fleet management, location-based value added and multimedia services, navigation, stolen vehicle monitoring, improved network management and differential billing. Players in this area, nowadays and worldwide, are trying to integrate positioning techniques that will fulfill related FCC- and ETSI- localization recommendations, yet without exaggerating the network costs. Major European manufacturers have already developed positioning methods, yet none of them have been adopted in a cellular networking environment. In this contribution a novel technique is presented and its performance and compliance with the related standards is evaluated.
