Communication and networking courses, especially wireless communication and networking courses, have become more and more important in many disciplines such as Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, and Computer Engineering. Due to costly hardware needed for communication and networking teaching laboratories, many of these courses are taught without a laboratory. In the rare cases of existing labs, such hardware based teaching labs lack the flexibility to evolve over time and adapt to different environments. Supported by a NSF TUES type II project, we have developed a series of software defined radio (SDR) based mixed signal detection laboratories for enhancing undergraduate communication and networking curricula. In our previous NSF funded CCLI project "Evolvable wireless laboratory design and implementation for enhancing undergraduate wireless engineering education", we have developed and demonstrated the first nationwide example of evolvable SDR based laboratories for three existing undergraduate courses. In this project, we are developing new lab components that can be adopted by multiple courses ranging from freshman year introductory course to senior year capstone design projects. Specifically, in this paper, we report the development of a SDR based mixed radio frequency signal detection platform with a graphical user interface (GUI). This user-friendly GUI will allow students to adjust RF parameters such as carrier frequency, symbol rate, pulse shaping filter, etc., and mix multiple RF signals together. Additionally, students are able to observe the transmitted signal in both time and frequency at both transmitter and receiver. At receiver side, the SDR based platform also provides students the functionality of performing RF signal detection via different detection methods including energy based detection, waveform based detection, and cyclostationary analysis based detection. Mobile cloud computing (MCC) is a relatively new concept that leverages the combination of cloud technology, mobile computing, and wireless networking to enrich the usability experiences of mobile users. Many field of application such as mobile health, mobile learning, mobile commerce and mobile entertainment are now taking advantage of MCC technologies. Since MCC is new, there is need to advance research in MCC in order to deepen practice. Currently, what exist are mostly descriptive literature reviews in the area of MCC. In this paper, a systematic literature review (SLR), which offers a structured, methodical, and rigorous approach to the understanding of the trend of research in MCC, and the least and most researched issue is presented. The objective of the study is to provide a credible intellectual guide for upcoming researchers in MCC to help them identify areas in MCC research where they can make the most impact. The SLR was limited to peer-reviewed conference papers and journal articles published from 2002 to 2014. The study reveals that privacy, security and trust in MCC are the least researched, whereas issues of architecture, context awareness and data management have been averagely researched, while issues on operations, end users, service and applications have received a lot of attention in the literature. © 2015 SERSC.

The proliferation of multimedia-capable mobile devices and ubiquitous high-speed network technologies to deliver multimedia objects has fueled the demand of mobile streaming multimedia. A necessary criterion for the mass acceptance of mobile devices is acceptable battery life of these devices. This paper explores linear prediction-based client-side strategies to reduce the wireless network interface card (WNIC) energy consumption by transitioning the WNIC to a lower power consuming sleep state. The basic idea of this strategy is to selectively choose proper periods of time to suspend communication by switching the WNIC to sleep state. A linear prediction-based time series forecasting technique is used to predict future no-data intervals. Simulation results show that linear prediction-based strategy gives better results than those based on simple averaging [Surendar Chandra et al., (2002)].

The convergence of telecommunications, computing and content industries has been one of the major trends during the recent years. The convergence has lead to the creation of a wide range of multimedia services, which are available in digital form through broadband networks. There is a need for network nodes that are capable of interfacing to different kinds of networks and implementing a programmable service platform for multimedia services. As a solution to this need, this paper introduces the Media Switch, which is able to combine different switching disciplines into a compact fabric and provides a platform for multimedia services. Finally, example services based on the Media Switch prototype are presented.

A CHUM (Cooperating ad Hoc networking to sUpport Messaging) network is an ad hoc network in which mobile devices cooperate to reduce connection costs when accessing wireless global networks. We study how members of a CHUM network cooperate in order to download multimedia data, such as on-air TV programs. Each peer in a CHUM takes turns serving as a proxy, which makes an Internet connection and downloads multimedia data for the other members. Then, the proxy distributes the data to other peers using its ad hoc connection, which we call chumcast. The proxy maintains and updates peer membership information and determines the next CHUM proxy. The CHUM network includes a recovery procedure when a proxy fails or when a CHUM network partitions. © 2002 IEEE.

The popularity of peer-to-peer multimedia file sharing applications such as Gnutella and Napster has created a flurry of recent research activity into peer-to-peer architectures. We believe that the proper evaluation of a peer-to-peer system must take into account the characteristics of the peers that choose to participate in it. Surprisingly, however, few of the peer-to-peer architectures currently being developed are evaluated with respect to such considerations. In this paper, we remedy this situation by performing a detailed measurement study of the two popular peer-to-peer file sharing systems, namely Napster and Gnutella. In particular, our measurement study seeks to characterize the population of end-user hosts that participate in these two systems. This characterization includes the bottleneck bandwidths between these hosts and the Internet at large, IP-level latencies to send packets to these hosts, how often hosts connect and disconnect from the system, how many files hosts share and download, the degree of cooperation between the hosts, and several correlations between these characteristics. Our measurements show that there is significant heterogeneity and lack of cooperation across peers participating in these systems.

With the proliferation of mobile streaming multimedia, available battery capacity constrains the end-user experience. Since streaming applications are expected to be long running, wireless network interface card's (WNIC) energy consumption is particularly an acute problem. In this work, we explore various mechanisms to conserve client WNIC energy consumption for popular streaming formats such as Microsoft Windows media, Real and Apple Quicktime. First, we investigate the WNIC energy consumption characteristics for these popular multimedia streaming formats under varying stream bandwidth and network loss rates. We show that even for a high bandwidth 2000 kbps stream, the WNIC unnecessarily spent over 56% of the time in idle state;illustrating the potential for significant energy savings. Based on these observations, we explore two mechanisms to conserve the client WNIC energy consumption. First we show the limitations of IEEE 802.11 power saving mode for multimedia streams. Without an understanding of the stream requirements, these scheduled rendezvous mechanisms do not offer any energy savings for multimedia streams over 56 kbps. We also develop history-based client-side strategies to reduce the energy consumed by transitioning the WNICs to a lower power consuming sleep state. We show that streams optimized for 28.8 kbps can save over 80% in energy consumption with 2% data loss. A high bandwidth stream (768 kbps) can still save 57% in energy consumption with less than 0.3% data loss. We also show that Real and Quicktime packets are harder to predict at the network level without understanding the packet semantics. As the amount of cross traffic generated by other clients that share the same wireless segment increases, the potential energy savings from our client side policies deteriorate further. Our work enables multimedia proxy and server developers to suitably customize the stream to lower client energy consumption.

We show that Microsoft media tends to transmit packets at regular intervals;streams optimized for 28.8 Kbps can save over 80% in energy consumption with 2% data loss. A high bandwidth stream (768 Kbps) can still save 57% in energy consumption with less than 0.3% data loss. For high bandwidth streams, Microsoft media exploits network-level packet fragmentation, which can lead to excessive packet loss (and wasted energy) in a lossy network. Real stream packets tend to be sent closer to each other, especially at higher bandwidths. Quicktime packets sometimes arrive in quick succession;most likely an application level fragmentation mechanism. Such packets are harder to predict at the network level without understanding the packet semantics.

We present a temporal debugger, capable of examining time flow of applications in general-purpose computer systems. The debugger is attached to a complete system simulator, which models an entire workstation in sufficient detail to run commodity operating systems and workloads. Unlike traditional debuggers, a debugger operating on a simulated system does not disturb the timing of the target program, allowing reproducible experiments and large amounts of instrumentation and monitoring without intrusion. We have implemented the temporal debugger by modifying the GNU debugger to operate on applications in a simulated Linux system. Debugger implementation is difficult because the debugger expects application-related data, whereas the simulator provides low-level data. We introduce a technique, virtual machine translation, for mapping simulator data to the debugger by parsing operating system data structures in the simulated system. The debugger environment allows collection of performance statistics from multiple abstraction levels: hardware, operating system, and application level. We show how this data can be used to profile quality of service performance of a video decoder. The debugger is used to detect display jitter, and by correlating runtime statistics to image rendering time, we expose deviations when the application is unable to render an image in time, thereby locating the cause of the display jitter.
