OFDM is the key technique in the next generation communication. In this paper, the design and implementation scheme of the baseband part of multimedia communication system carried by automobile is described. It is developed with the COFDM technique and MPEG-4 standard. The baseband system is mainly composed of two boards-source and channel encoders/decoders, which include some sub-blocks for different functions. The equipment designed can transmit audio/video signals at a wireless mobile channel for some special users exclusively. Based on the theory of software defined radio and the idea of modular function design, it is implemented by the universal high performance chips-DSP, FPGA and EPLD. It supplies a convenient user interface and the software embedded in the chips can be programmed to different functions. So it is easy to debug and modify for designers with a much lower cost

The MultiFlex system is an application-to-platform mapping tool that integrates heterogeneous parallel components - H/W or S/W - into a homogeneous platform programming environment. This leads to higher quality designs through encapsulation and abstraction. Two high-level parallel programming models are supported by the following MultiFlex platform mapping tools: a distributed system object component (DSOC) object-oriented message passing model and a symmetrical multiprocessing (SMP) model using shared memory. We demonstrate the combined use of the MultiFlex multiprocessor mapping tools, supported by high-speed hardware-assisted messaging, context-switching, and dynamic scheduling using the StepNP demonstrator multiprocessor system-on-chip platform, for two representative applications: 1) an Internet traffic management application running at 2.5 Gb/s and 2) an MPEG4 video encoder (VGA resolution, at 30 frames/s). For these applications, a combination of the DSOC and SMP programming models were used in interoperable fashion. After optimization and mapping, processor utilization rates of 85%-91% were demonstrated for the traffic manager. For the MPEG4 decoder, the average processor utilization was 88%.

Achieving effective voice communication over mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) offers both new challenges and opportunities for speech coding. This paper investigates a new 13.6 kb/s subband structure bandwidth scalable (SB-SWS) scheme for MANETs, which is based on a high-quality narrowband speech coder, the 11.8 kb/s G. 729 Annex E, with the higher band using a bandwidth extension (B WE) approach to reduce bit rate required The performance of the scalable coder is tested for MANETs with a simulation test. The results demonstrate that the scalable approach contributes to effective and reliable voice communication in MANETs.

AVS-M (The Advanced Audio Video Coding Standard-Mobile Version) is established by Audio Video standard Working Group of China for mobile-multimedia applications. To meet demands for communication between multimedia source and mobile system, transcoding from MPEG-2 to AVS-M is a key technique. However, the advanced intra and inter mode decision techniques adopted in AVS-M have a high computing requirement, which limits the real time implementation in mobile environment In this paper, we propose a prediction mode decision optimization algorithm to reduce the transcoding complexity based on our previous work. Analyzing the relation among the prediction errors of blocks and doing adaptive motion re-estiamtion, we fast decide the best inter mode. Utilizing the directional feature of DCT coefficients, we fast decide the best intra mode. The simulation results show that the proposed MPEG-2 to AVS-M transcoder with mode decision optimization can be effectively adopted for mobile video communications.

With the rapid growth of wireless access to the Internet, there has been an increasing demand in providing high data rate real time traffic such as audio and video over wideband wireless channels. However, the transmitted multimedia traffic experience frequency-selective fading in wideband wireless channels. By dividing the wideband channel into several smaller sub-channels and sending multimedia traffic in parallel orthogonal sub-channels, which is widely known as orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), the frequency-selective channel can be transformed into a set of frequency-flat channels. OFDM has become a prospective technique for the next generation wireless communications. In this paper, we analyze the effect of sub-carrier assignment on the transmitted multimedia traffic. By increasing the number of sub-carriers, each sub-channel behaves practically as a quasic-static one, such that frequency-selective fading and intersymbol interference (ISI) can be alleviated. The multiplexing of sub-carriers is introduced to combat the variability of wireless channel, but the performance of wireless channel would also be degraded. We present a quality assessment of audio and video traffic over OFDM wireless channel based on sub-carrier assignment. Simulation results show that proper sub-carrier assignment could significantly reduce errors during high rate multimedia transmission.

We have been working on construction scheme of multimedia communication system based on QoS (quality of service)-aware agent organization. In this paper, we propose a behavioral characteristics model in multiagent systems to support their design and operation. We also introduce an observation and control scheme in flexible distributed system (FDS) and configure the behavioral characteristics model to analyze the behavior of multiagent systems based on QoS of FDS. In addition, this model is applied to multimedia communication system configured by QoS-aware agent organization, and discussed the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

Machine learning (ML) allows a machine to acquire basic and decision-making knowledge so that it can be delegated with tasks that are otherwise left to human for implementation. Incremental learning is a form of continuous ML wherein the knowledge acquisition can go on indefinitely for as long as there is some new knowledge to learn. In effect, a machine becomes smarter after gaining added knowledge from training. Our paper details the design of an incremental ML component of a ubiquitous multimodal multimediacomputing system. Our system chooses the media and modalities that are appropriate for the user situation; the situation itself is based upon user's context, user's profile and the user's environment and hardware profile. The user context itself is dependent on the user's location, the noise level in the workplace and the presence or absence of other people in the vicinity, and the user's computing device. If applicable, the user's special need (i.e. handicap) is also taken into consideration in the media and modality selection.
