In P2P network, there are a considerable proportion of free riders, which contribute nothing or little to the P2P system but obtain resources from the system. In order to address this problem, we present a utility-based auction cooperation incentive mechanism in the P2P network. Our approach is that before communicating with destination peer, the source peer first demands peers to auction their utilities, and then select the maximum utility as its destination peer, and gives some benefit to it, at the same time, gives some punishment to the liars. By using this mechanism, the more the peers contribute to the system, the more utility the peers can obtain, and therefore, the more benefits the peers can gain from the system. The experiment results show that the incentive mechanism assures the justice of gaining benefits for different kinds of peers in the system, and hence, controls the free riders effectively, and improves the whole performance of the P2P network. © IFIP International Federation for Information Processing 2006.

Rate control is an important issue in streaming applications over wireless network. TFRC is a widely accepted rate control protocol in wired networks, but it has a serious shortcoming that it cannot distinguish the wireless channel error based loss rate from the total packet loss rate measured at streaming client. In this paper, we focus on wireless streaming over 3G network, and propose an amended TCP-friendly rate control protocol TFWSRC which makes use of the characteristic of 3G network to distinguish the congestion based packet loss rate from the total packet loss rate. TFWSRC proposes a convenient method to measure the total end to end packet loss rate without considering the jitter problem. It not only inherit the TCP-friendly features of TFRC and also adopts a flexible increasing strategy of packet sending rate to ensure the presentation quality at streaming client

We describe a concept facilitating to ease the nomadic access to mobile multimedia applications. In order to provide convenient access to the content, the details of the access are semi-automatically customized to adaptation attributes. Through this we can handle various adaptation tasks on the application level. This requires a flexible system architecture permitting to steer and control the adaptation process as well as for the transmission of data between the application residing on the mobile access device and the service host. The devised broker concept will be explained in terms of a scenario which shows the adaptation of a user and device dependent mobile media service.

This paper introduces a novel "HoLiSTiC" framework for visual sensor networks (VisSNs) and studies security issues within this context. The HoLiSTiC paradigm, which encompasses many existing VisSN proposals, effectively exploits heterogeneous wireless sensing and communications for more flexible, practical and scalable visual surveillance. Security aspects of HoLiSTiC are considered by highlighting open research problems. Secure routing issues in unidirectional optical free-space sensor networks that form the foundation of the HoLiSTiC transport network are discussed. In addition, a novel distributed security paradigm based on independent media sharing is presented to demonstrate how the interaction of signal processing, networking, and cryptography can benefit VisSNs.

Flash memory is widely adopted in various consumer products, especially for embedded systems. With strong demands on product designs for overhead control and performance requirements, vendors must have an effective design for the mapping of logical block addresses (LBA's) and physical addresses of data over flash memory. This paper targets such an essential issue by proposing a configurable mapping method that could trade the main-memory overhead with the system performance under the best needs of vendors. Peer-to-peer (P2P) computing is becoming increasingly popular as the Web continues to grow in both content and the number of connected devices. P2P provides a network that relies on the computing power and bandwidth of the participants in the network rather than concentrating it in a relatively few servers. However, in a P2P environment, most of the time, there are a lot of idle resources that can be harvested. Each peer is autonomous, while connection and network address may vary. A flexible and efficient job scheduling is needed to harvest the idle computing power, which is Motorolareg iDENtrade (integrated digital enhanced network) phones located locally and at plantation. This paper discusses how the distributed automated testing in P2P computing systems, which is using JXTAtrade technology, can be done. And also, what are the advantages of using P2P computing environment rather than the conventional computing system. Furthermore, the job scheduler framework for this P2P system is also included in this paper. The design of this job scheduler is done such a way to allow multiple consumers or clients to schedule the jobs to the resource providers and execute on its own. The result is sent back to the client when done

Recently, 3GPP introduced QoS control architecture model to support QoS-enabled multimedia services such as VoIP. This model would be appropriate to apply the peer-to-peer services so that the procedure for the session establishment is quite a complicate to provide the connectivity between two parties. This paper proposes the QoS control architecture model using API for the support of streaming services, which is client-server service type. It is different from the peer-to-peer service type of VoIP. The paper will show the effectiveness and the simplicity of the proposed model to support streaming service. In addition either a Network operator or a (3rd party) service provider could own the streaming service server so that service openness may be easily achieved.

One of the key technological challenges to advance our knowledge-based society is the development of mobile multimedia communication systems and networks. With rapid advances in wireless packet networking technology, it is becoming possible to provide mobile users not only with data, voice, but also with video communication services. Many emerging mobile applications require the playback of video on the mobile hosts, and today's wireless networks are getting ready to provide sufficient bandwidth for support of compressed video transmission. With the increase in the bandwidth of wireless channels and the computing power of the mobile devices, it is expected that video service will be offered for wireless networks in the near future. In this paper we are especially interested in the issue of wireless video multicast, in which there may be hundreds and thousands of mobile hosts receiving the same video from one sender. Reliable video distribution over WLANs is still a challenging problem to solve. Transport of video content is very sensitive to bandwidth variability, delay jitter, packet error rates and types of packets in which errors occur. We present VideoMsg an audio-video distribution system over WLANs which provides the best combination of technologies for the transmission of video information to heterogeneous mobile users.

We present a framework, called AgentJ that extends the NS-2 platform to support the simulation and performance analysis of Java network applications. We particularly focus on the simulation of P2P networks and have already integrated the P2PS middleware for the simulation of super-peer networks for discovering participants in large scale Internet applications, which has a high significance for distributed multimedia applications to enable overlays for the discovery and searching across large numbers of distributed multimedia resources. AgentJ builds upon the numerous years of networking research with NS-2 and leverages the Protolib toolkit from NRL to facilitate the passing of real data between NS-2 nodes, thereby creating a platform for the simulation of content-based middleware and applications. AgentJ currently supports UDP unicast and multicast and maintains compatible programming interfaces with the standard Java network package as well as the NS-2 scripting interfaces employed for staging simulations
