Wireless environments present many challenges for secure multimedia access, especial streaming media. The availability of varying network bandwidths and diverse receiver device processing powers and storage spaces demand scalable and flexible approaches that are capable of adapting to changing network conditions as well as device capabilities. To meet these requirements, scalable and fine granularity scalable (FGS) compression algorithms were proposed and widely adopted to provide scalable access of multimedia with interoperability between different services and flexible support to receivers with different device capabilities. Encryption is one of the most important security tools to protect content from unauthorized use. If a medium data stream is encrypted using non-scalable cryptography algorithms, decryption at arbitrary bit rate to provide scalable services can hardly be accomplished. If a medium compressed using scalable coding needs to be protected and non-scalable cryptography algorithms are used, the advantages of scalable coding may be lost. Therefore scalable encryption techniques are needed to provide scalability or to preserve the FGS adaptation capability (if the media stream is FGS coded) and enable intermediate processing of encrypted data without unnecessary decryption. In this paper, we will give an overview of scalable encryption schemes and present fine grained scalable encryption algorithm. One desirable feature for FGS compatible encryption schemes is to provide simplicity and flexibility in supporting scalable multimedia communication and multimedia content access control in wireless environments.

We present an unsupervised method to enrich textual applications with relevant images and colors. The images are collected by querying large image repositories and subsequently the colors are computed using image processing. A prototype system based on this method is presented where the method is applied to song lyrics. In combination with a lyrics synchronization algorithm the system produces a rich multimedia experience. In order to identify terms within the text that may be associated with images and colors, we select noun phrases using a part of speech tagger. Large image repositories are queried with these terms. Per term representative colors are extracted using the collected images. Hereto, we either use a histogram-based or a mean shift-based algorithm. The representative color extraction uses-the non-uniform distribution of the colors found in the large repositories. The images that are ranked best by the search engine are displayed on a screen, while the extracted representative colors are rendered on controllable lighting devices in the living room. We evaluate our method by comparing the computed colors to standard color representations of a set of English color terms. A second evaluation focuses on the distance in color between a queried term in English and its translation in a foreign language. Based on results from three sets of terms, a measure of suitability of a term for color extraction based on KL Divergence is proposed. Finally, we compare the performance of the algorithm using either the automatically indexed repository of Google Images and the manually annotated ***. Based on the results of these experiments, we conclude that using the presented method we can compute the relevant color for a term using a large image repository and image processing.

Interoperability between systems for secure delivery of content (audio and video) over the Internet or via digital television broadcasting is still hampered by the lack of interoperability among proprietary content protection systems. The OPIMA (Open Platform Initiative for multimedia access) specification offers a generic solution for multimedia terminals, in which the end-user's terminal is adapted to a content protection system by downloading a corresponding plug-in. This paper describes the OPIMA solution and shows how it can be applied.

Peer-to-peer content distribution provides high network throughput with relatively low server cost and scales better than traditional content distribution networks with respect to the number of clients. It is ideal for applications requiring large data transfer such as Video-on-Demand or live video streaming. Traditional forensic watermarking systems are based on the assumption that each user receives a unique copy of video content to allow for tracking of pirated content back to the original recipient. However, P2P-based distribution systems are typically designed to supply identical copies to each user. This paper proposes a new watermarking framework that is suitable for P2P-based content delivery systems. Watermarking algorithms that are appropriate for this system are also discussed.

multimedia data security is very important for multimedia commerce on the Internet such as video-on-demand and real-time video multicast. Traditional cryptographic algorithms for data security are often not fast enough to process the vast amount of data generated by the multimedia applications to meet the realtime constraints. This paper presents a joint encryption and compression framework in which video data are scrambled efficiently in the frequency domain by employing selective bit scrambling, block shuffling and block rotation of the transform coefficients and motion vectors. The new approach is very simple to implement, yet provides considerable level of security, has minimum adverse impact on the compression efficiency, and allows transparency, transcodability, and other content processing functionalities without accessing the cryptographic key.

This paper describes a hardware/software framework and approach for fast integration and testing of complex real-time multimedia analysis algorithms. It enables the rapid assessment of combinations of multimedia analysis algorithms, in order to determine their usefulness in future consumer storage products. The framework described here consists of a set of networked personal computers, running a variety of multimedia analysis algorithms and a multi-media database. The database stores both multimedia content and metadata - as generated by multimedia content analysis algorithms - and maintains links between the two. The full hardware/software solution functions as a test-bed for new, advanced content analysis algorithms;new algorithms are easily plugged-in into any of the networked PCs, while outdated algorithms are simply removed. Once a selected consumer system configuration has passed important user-tests, a more dedicated embedded consumer product implementation is derived in a straightforward way from the framework.

content delivery over the Internet, in order to allow universal access, needs to address both the multimedia nature of the content and the capabilities of the diverse client platforms the content is being delivered to. We present a system that tailors multimedia content to optimally match the capabilities of the client device requesting it. This system has three key components: (1) a representation scheme called the InfoPyramid (2) A set of transcoders for converting modality or resolution, and (3) a customizer that selects the best content representation to meet the client capabilities while delivering the most value. The InfoPyramid provides a multi-model, multi-resolution representation hierarchy for multimedia. The raw content components, such as text, audio, images, video, etc., are ingested by the system into InfoPyramids. Next, the transcoder populates the InfoPyramid structures with multi-resolution, multi-model versions of the content. The number of possible renditions of the multimedia content is potentially combinatorial in the number of content elements. The customization module uses the client device characteristics as constraints to pick the best content representation. content value is computed on the basis of publisher preference guidelines and the content transcoding. We illustrate with a system that deliver news stories customized to diverse clients such as workstations, PCs, PDAs, cellular phones, pagers, etc.

Context-aware recommendations offer the potential of exploiting social contents and utilize related tags and rating information to personalize the search for content considering a given context. Recommendation systems tackle the problem of trying to identify relevant resources from the vast number of choices available online. In this study, we propose a new recommendation model that personalizes recommendations and improves the user experience by analyzing the context when a user wishes to access multimedia content. We conducted empirical analysis on a dataset from last. fm to demonstrate the use of latent preferences for ranking items under a given context. Additionally, we use an optimization function to maximize the mean average precision measure of the resulted recommendation. Experimental results show a potential improvement to the quality of the recommendation in terms of accuracy when compared with state-of-the-art algorithms.

A great research challenge in multimedia systems is the user-centric design and adaptation of interfaces to multimedia systems. User-centric does involve methods of HCI (Human-Centric Interface) research, but should also better incorporate the interest of the users, the usage context and the technical properties of the system. This work focuses on multimedia systems in the domain of emergent interactive TV applications. These systems are very dynamic and rich in their interaction patterns and require hyperlinked, browsing, searching and collaborative access to different multimedia resources, thus delivering complex research problems to the interface design of multimedia systems. In the application center is the development and access to recommendation systems which is an important component in such system, due to the immense information in channels and content proposed. The work will therefore pose and solve research questions on concrete requirements of multimedia systems for interactive TV applications in terms of utilization and context. For the practical evaluation of the proposed methods, we will provide extensions to PersonalTV, a multimedia recommendation system recently released at the department of computer science with a focus on Distributed Information systems of University of Passau, that will presents a means to provide for a mobile multimedia systems an User-Centric and personalized access.

The scope of this paper is to propose an innovative interactive system for 3D visualization of multimedia databases. In such databases, the digital content is accompanied by complementary information and metadata that describe the content. The proposed 3D visualization environment is able to provide multiscale representations driven by appropriate clustering processes that exploit content descriptions. It is also able to provide direct access to all the digital content, both in terms of physical access to the multimedia files as well as in terms of searching and retrieving information.
