The huge amount of video content and the increasing rate in which new content is being created makes video summarization a necessary tool for the efficient access and management of video repositories. Nevertheless, the huge amount of data and the complexity of current techniques make the implantation of the summarization systems a difficult or non practical task. This paper presents current advances in the development of a novel algorithm for on-line video summarization, which can be easily used also as a video retrieval tool, aimed to combine summarization quality with high computational efficiency providing a system that can be practical for both commercial and home environments.

The efficient file searching is an essential feature in P2P systems. While many current approaches use brute force techniques to search files by meta information (file names, extensions or user-provided tags), the interest is in implementing techniques that allow content-based search in P2P systems. Recently, clustering techniques have been used for searching text documents to increase the efficiency of document discovery and retrieval. Integrating such techniques into P2P systems is important to enhance searching in P2P file sharing systems. While some effort has been done for content-based searching for text documents in P2P systems, there has been few research work for applying these techniques for multimedia content in P2P systems. In this paper we introduce two P2P content-based clustering techniques for multimedia documents. These techniques are an adaptation of the existing Class-based Semantic Search (CSS) algorithm for text documents. The proposed algorithms have been integrated into a JXTA-based Overlay P2P platform, and some initial evaluation results are provided. The JXTA-Overlay together with the considered clustering techniques is thus very useful for developing P2P multimedia applications requiring efficient searching of multimedia contents in peer nodes.

In recent years, digital sound material becomes more and more available. However, there is still lack of qualitative solutions for access to digital sound archives. Not only that there is no consistency in formats of archived materials with related media often in separate collections, but related metadata are given in non-standard specialist format, incomplete or even erroneous. Hence, the full value of the archived material is hidden from the end user. EASAIER addresses these issues with the development of an innovative remote access system which extends beyond standard content management and retrieval systems. The EASAIER system focuses on sound archives, libraries, museums, broadcast archives, and music schools. However, the tools may be used by anyone interested in accessing archived material; amateur or professional, regardless of the material involved. Furthermore, it enriches the access experience enabling the user to experiment with the materials in exciting new ways. The system features; enhanced cross media retrieval functionality, multi-media synchronization, audio and video processing, analysis and visualization tools, all combined within in a single user configurable interface.

Supporting transparent delivery and convenient use of multimedia content across a wide range of networks and devices is still a challenging task within the multimedia research community; Universal multimedia access (UMA) is a vision that has been pursued for quite some time. In multimedia frameworks, content adaptation is the core concept to make progress toward this goal. Most media adaptation engines targeting UMA scale the content w.r.t. terminal capabilities and network resource constraints and do not sufficiently consider end user preferences or even the utility of the adapted content for the user. Based on our previous work and the support of the MPEG-21 framework, we present a transparent solution to provide a content utility-aware adaptation decision for such utility-unaware multimedia frameworks. The idea is to outsource the challenging utility-aware adaptation decision taking task, which takes many factors into consideration and leads to a complex optimization problem. A realistic use case is adopted to show how related external multimedia frameworks can easily integrate and use our proposed adaptation decision taking Web Service.

The ENTHRONE project proposes an integrated management solution that covers the entire audiovisual service distribution chain, including protected content handling, distribution across networks and reception at user terminals. The aim is not to unify or impose a strategy on each individual entity of the chain, but to harmonise their functionality, in order to support an end-to-end quality of service (QoS) architecture over heterogeneous networks, applied to a variety of audio-visual services that are delivered to various user terminals. To meet its objectives, the project is relying on an efficient, distributed and open management architecture for the end-to-end delivery chain. The MPEG-21 data model is used to provide the common support for implementing and managing the resources functionalities. Furthermore, the MPEG-21 framework implementation in the project will contribute to the realisation of universal multimedia access (UMA), which aims at achieving interoperable transparent access to multimedia resources from any type of client terminal or network and so, the rapid growing for online exchange of rich media resources.

The goal of the paper is to present an architecture designed for mobile multimedia content adaptation, applied to the newest solutions for instruction and learning, generically named mobile learning or m-learning. The field of research is situated at the intersection of mobile tools and e-learning and the research has as a goal to provide the opportunity to access computer resources from any location and to adapt the multimedia content to the specific features of mobile devices, communication environment, userspsila preferences and userspsila knowledge. The systems developed based on the architecture proposed in this paper will be able to provide powerful facilities for searching and support for instruction effectiveness, for performances evaluation, are time and location independent. The technical solutions proposed follow to use the potential of mobile devices to become important tools in education field.

Wireless communications has emerged as one of the largest sectors of the telecommunications industry and one of the most promising growth areas into the next decade. To meet the challenges of deploying an efficient wireless multimedia network, it is useful to consider the various open systems interconnection (OSI) layers together when designing the network to take into account quality of service (QoS) requirements at the medium access control (MAC) layer where the scheduling and resource allocation algorithms reside. In this paper, we propose and evaluate an adaptive cross layer (physical, MAC and application) scheduling policy with flow multiplexing to fairly meet intra-user and inter-user QoS requirements.

In times of ubiquitous access to the internet multimedia systems utilizing networks gains more and more importance. multimedia systems support features beyond the download and display of videos and images:Adaptation of data and metadata, caching and distribution of multimedia content and metadata over different types of networks and integration of the user as critical factor. Focus of the special session on multimedia MetadataManagement & Retrieval (M3R 08) is put on multimedia metadata. Aspects include digital rights management, mobile multimedia, user context, metadata for content adaptation, bottom up and top down annotation, retrieval and extension of existing standards. 8 out of 11 submissions were selected for presentation on the conference and publication in the proceedings. The special session is organized by the multimedia Metadata Community that has already organized a series of 7 successful workshops in the past taking place in Aachen, Berlin, Graz and Klagenfurt.

Peer-to-peer service-oriented community coordinated multimedia (SCCM) is envisioned as a novel paradigm in which the user consumes multiple media through requesting multimedia-intensive Web services via diversity display devices, converged networks, and heterogeneous platforms within a virtual, open and collaborative community in context of a novel concept of multimedia applications as Web services. A generic P2P SCCM scenario is created and examined first. The SCCM model is designed with respect to service architecture, a tunneled hierarchical P2P model and metamodel framework. The progress with the development of content annotation services is presented.

There is a need to automatically extracting video content for efficient access, understanding, browsing and retrieval of videos. Detecting and interpreting human presence, actions and activities is one of the most valuable functions in this proposed framework. The general objectives of this research are to analyze and process the audio-video streams to a robust audiovisual action recognition system by integrating, structuring and accessing multimodal information via multidimensional retrieval and extraction model. The research also presented a method to characterize, detect, identify, and abstract action by combining low level and high level features. The proposed technique characterizes the action scenes by integrating cues obtained from both the audio and video tracks. Information is combined based on visual features (motion, edge, and visual characteristics of objects), audio features and video for recognizing action. This model uses HMM and GMM to provide a framework for fusing these features and to represent the multidimensional structure of the framework. Compared with using single source of either visual or audio track alone, such combined audio-visual information provides more reliable performance and allows us to understand the story content of movies in more detail. Several experiments were conducted and the results showed that by using visual features only (74%), audio features only (65%) and combined audiovisual (88%). The results showed an improvement in recognition when both audio and visual cues are combined.
