The increasing availability of a variety of wireless access technologies provides users with access to critical content and applications. In medical applications, reliability and ubiquity must be guaranteed by new communication technologies in order to favour their adoption. Ensuring a satisfactory quality of service and a high degree of availability requires a reliable delivery system that optimally brings together several wireless access systems and medical-based platforms into an efficient trial product to satisfy operational needs. This paper proposes a novel system architecture to support adaptive real-time medical applications, possibly multimedia-based, over various wireless technologies. The system addresses several issues associated with the successful operation of applications running over heterogeneous networks. First, it defines a layer of abstraction to isolate the applications from the actual transport system. Second, it uses a message-based protocol to improve the reliability and security of the communications over different access systems. Finally, it includes adaptation mechanisms for various system statuses. A real-life healthcare application capable of transmitting voice, video and medical data simultaneously is used for validation. Experimental results are reported that demonstrate the viability of the approach.

This paper describes an integrated system for the acquisition, automatic annotation and Web publication of television broadcast news programmes named ANTS (automatic newscast transcription system). The system consists of several analysis components integrated in a unified architecture. Users have the possibility to access a large daily-growing database of news stories from the main national channels, all identified, categorised and published in a fully automatic way. The system identifies story boundaries, extracts texts from spoken content, classifies stories by subject and links external relevant information coming from the Web. Performances of the system have been evaluated in a real-life scenario, by providing an instance of the system to a panel of professional users inside RAI. The strength of the approach behind ANTS consists in the ability to integrate several heterogeneous analysis components in a performant and ready-for-production environment, capable of elaborating many hours of material per day without significant service drops and with sufficiently good accuracy for industrial employment in large broadcasting facilities.

Semantic understanding of multimedia content has become a very popular research topic in recent years. Semantic concept detection algorithms face many challenges such as the semantic gap and imbalance data, among others. In this paper, we propose a novel algorithm using multiple correspondence analysis (MCA) to discover the correlation between features and classes to reduce the feature space and to bridge the semantic gap. Moreover, the proposed algorithm is able to explore the correlation between items (i.e., feature-value pairs generated for each of the features) and classes which expands its ability to handle imbalance data sets. To evaluate the proposed algorithm, we compare its performance on semantic concept detection with several existing feature selection methods under various well-known classifiers using some of the concepts and benchmark data available from the TRECVID project. The results demonstrate that our proposed algorithm achieves promising performance, and it performs significantly better than those feature selection methods in the comparison for the imbalanced data sets.

Hierarchical genetic algorithms (HGA) as a tool for a search and optimizing methodology has now reached a mature stage. The minimum resource facility to carry user traffic which is called a channel unit (CU) is composed of the IEEE 802.16 medium access control (MAC) protocol. The control of the number of CU depending on traffic load solves heterogeneous and asymmetrical traffic problem in 4G system. In a cellular network, the call arrival rate, the call duration and the communication overhead between the base stations and the control center are vague and uncertain. Whether the criteria of concern be nonlinear, constrained, discrete or NP hard. In this paper, the HGA is used to tackle the neural network (NN) topology as well as the fuzzy logic controller for the dynamic CUs allocation scheme in wireless access net-works. Therefore, we propose a new efficient HGA CUs allocation (HGACA) in cellular networks. It aims to efficiently satisfy their diverse quality-of-service (QoS) requirements of multimedia traffic. The results show that our algorithm has lower blocking rate, lower dropping rate, less update overhead, and shorter channel acquisition delay than previous methods.

multimedia devices, services, and content are already distributed inside the home network. Mobility, sharing and IP based delivery mechanisms introduce additional challenges to accessibility by extending the range of distribution into interconnected home and Internet scale scenarios. However, the user should be able to access any of these targets in a satisfying, easy, and uniform way despite the differences in target and interaction device technologies. This paper proposes and demonstrates how RESTful and declarative approach could be used in solving extended accessibility and usability problems. In the proposed solution, the network becomes the media center, as one of the networked devices operates as a hub between targets and UI devices, while the actual media is streamed in out of band P2P fashion.

The paper presents a new approach for feature representation using semantic line groupings in an image. The algorithm uses the hypothesis in line with Gestalt laws of proximity that as a baseline in an image, semantic structures are formed by line segments placed in close proximity to each other. The algorithm uses line segments in an image to form semantic groups based on a minimum distance threshold. The semantic line groupings are differentiated from each other by the number of group members and their geometrical properties represented as histograms. The results are analyzed using different similarity measures to understand the strengths and weaknesses of the grouping approach and those of the similarity measures.

In recent years, numerous large-scale Wireless LANs (WLAN) have been deployed all over the world. However, the shortage of non-interfering channels makes it a challenge for WLANs to efficiently support real-time multicast services. In this paper, we study the problem of efficient scheduling of real-time multicast flows . For mitigating interferences, we allow access-points (APs) to transmit simultaneously only if they are mutually non-interfering and our objective is minimizing the fraction of time used by the APs for servicing the multicast flows. We introduce two multicast strategies, the association strategy for which each user is restricted to receive flows only from its associated AP and the non-association strategy for which a user may also decode transmissions from other APs in its vicinity. Under both strategies, the scheduling problem of minimizing the multicast service time is NP-hard and we propose simple approximation algorithms with provable performance bounds. Our simulations clearly demonstrate that the proposed algorithms yield efficient multicast scheduling.

For a SOC communication architecture, an efficient arbitration algorithm to resolve contention schemes for managing simultaneous access requests to the shared communication resources are required to prevent system performance *** paper presents the design and performance analysis of an arbiter with a hybrid arbitration algorithm. The hybrid arbitration algorithm contains static fixed priority algorithm in conjunction with dynamic algorithm to gain better system performance is described. The performance analysis for the various combinations of the arbitration algorithms under different traffic loads is simulated. The results indicate a better performance can be achieved as compared with the traditional arbitration assignment scheme. Based on the performance analysis, the hybrid arbitration can be custom-tuned to meet the design requirements. The implementation of the arbiter with hybrid arbitration scheme for system on chip applications is also explained. The reconfigurable arbiter was implemented by FPGA and synthesized by Synopsys design complier with a TSMC 0.18 mum cell library.

In the last few years, live pay-TV system via Internet has come to be established with the development of broadband network. To develop such a system, a mechanism for content protection is required. In this paper, a new architecture integrating fingerprint with cryptosystem is proposed to protect contents from unauthorized access and illegal redistribution. We describe a scheme integrating anti-collusion code and home page public-key cryptosystem. The proposed scheme is shown feasible and realistic for implementing with respect to computation/communication cost.

Retrieving images is a useful tool to help radiologist to check medical image and diagnosis. In this paper, we propose a retrieval system of computer aided brain magnetic resonance imaging diagnosis , which integrated archiving and communication system, feature extraction and storage, feature match, and user interfaces. The system can be access in three ways, (i) using our system including PACS and image retrieval system, (ii)embedded the software into current PACS, and (iii) internet connection to submit an image as a query, and receive in return a set of images from the the web system. The system utilizes sophisticated image processing algorithms, combined with robust database technology and state-of-the-art web-enabled hardware, and packages these capabilities into a tightly-integrated diagnosis environment for the radiologist. This paper outlines the architecture, algorithms, and the test/verification procedures that our system has implemented.
