In meshed-based peer-to-peer streaming systems peers forward packets to their neighbors based on local scheduling decisions. The local decisions affect how packets get distributed in the mesh, the probability of duplicates and the distribution of the transmission delays. In this paper we propose an analytic framework that allows the evaluation of various scheduling algorithms. We consider two solutions where scheduling is performed at the forwarding peer, based on the knowledge of the playout buffer content at the neighbors. We evaluate the effectiveness of the solutions in terms of the probability that a peer can play out a packet versus the playback delay, and the scalability of the solutions with respect to the size of the overlay.

The need of bandwidth in high speed data and multimedia services of Broadband Wireless System means the need of occupying higher frequency band. LMDS is an example of broadband access system operated in EHF millimeter band (e.g. 30 GHz). In millimeter band, the capacity of wireless network will have two major constrains: the impact of millimeter wave channels in physical layer and the channel access method in MAC layer. Improvement in physical layer is usually carried-out by adaptive modulation considering channel state information (CSI). In MAC layer, many adaptive scheduling have also been developed. Combining these two approaches result in many algorithms called cross layer optimization in wireless network. This paper present our first step of evaluation of cross layer optimization performance of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) network applied in millimeter wave channels in tropical region. Based on measurement and related channels data in Surabaya Indonesia, we found that 'rain attenuation', could reach the level 70 dB in the long period of time. Simulation shows the impact of the severity of 'rain channel', i.e. degrade overall throughput or decreases the feasible rate of system. To compensate the degradation by channels and to provide maximum capacity, considering fairness among users, an evaluation of resource allocation via simulation of cross-layer optimization of OFDM Wireless Network in tropical region on millimeter wave channels is being carried out.

The motivation of this paper is to enhance the user perceived precision of results of content Based Information Retrieval (CBIR) systems with Query Refinement (QR), Visual Analysis (VA) and Relevance Feedback (RF) algorithms. The proposed algorithms were implemented as modules into K-Space CBIR system. The QR module discovers hypernyms for the given query from a free text corpus (such as Wikipedia) and uses these hypernyms as refinements for the original query. Extracting hypernyms from Wikipedia makes it possible to apply query refinement to more queries than in related approaches that use static predefined thesaurus such as Wordnet. The VA Module uses the K-Means algorithm for clustering the images based on low-level MPEG - 7 Visual features. The RF Module uses the preference information expressed by the user to build user profiles by applying SOM-based supervised classification, which is further optimized by a hybrid Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm. The experiments evaluating the performance of QR and VA modules show promising results.

The notion of ontology is introduced to information retrieval systems and semantic Web-oriented architecture of personalized intelligent information retrieval system is presented, and hierarchical tree model of local domain ontological repository of biomedical diseases system is constructed, in which the OWL language is used to detail annotate syntax and semantics of concepts, their attributes and relations among the concepts. Automatic acquirement of remote information on the Internet and pretreatment of local domain ontological repository are implemented by inference rules and information semantics-based intelligent clustering algorithm in the architecture, and preference database of doctors are managed logically according to their retrieval interests. Consequently, the system will meets the requirement of personalized intelligent information search for diseases diagnosis, and further improves recall and precision of information retrieval on biomedical diseases system.

As of July 31, 2007, there are over 522 million 3G subscribers in the world (source: ***). Out of these 130 million are on UMTS, a growth of almost 100% in one year. Data services are expected to grow significantly within the next few years. Current 2.5 G and 3 G operators are already reporting that a significant proportion of usage is now due to data, implying an increasing demand for high-data-rate, content-rich multimedia services. Although current Release 99 WCDMA systems offer a maximum practical data rate of 384 kbps, the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) have included in Release 5 of the specifications a new high-speed, low-delay feature referred to as High Speed Downlink Packet access (HSDPA). HSDPA also known as Release 5, provides significant enhancements to the Downlink compared to WCDMA Release 99 in terms of peak data rate, cell throughput, and round trip delay. This is achieved through the implementation of a fast channel control and allocation mechanism that employs such features as Adaptive Modulation and Coding and fast Hybrid Automatic Repeat Request (HARQ). Shorter Physical Layer frames are also employed High Speed Uplink Packet access (HSUPA) (UMTS Release 6) complements the High Speed Downlink Packet access (HSDPA) technology. As the name suggests the improvement is in the uplink where the theoretical uplink data rate can be up to 5.76 Mbps. Together, HSDPA and HSUPA offer reduced latency and much higher data rates on the downlink and uplink, theoretically as high as 14.

The explosion of the digitized media introduces a demanding problem of security in multimedia data communication in the network environment. Accordingly, digital watermarking technique needs to be integrated in a digital rights management framework to address different features of the content management. The purpose is to build up low power, real time, reliable and secure data hiding system that can be obtained all the way through hardware implementation. As an effort towards the power efficient system, here we present an oblivious, spatial domain watermarking based authentication algorithm and its VLSI/ULSI architecture. It is realized with the help of "spintronics" or "spin based electronics" where classical binary bit '1' and '0' are encoded in orthogonal spin polarization of single electron confined in a quantum dot and placed in magnetic field. The benefit of the spintronic devices is that it needs much less power than conventional technologies whilst operating at much higher speed. The projected scheme utilizes the lower bit plane modulation for hiding a binary image like information within a gray scale image. All the modules of the watermarking algorithm are implemented in Single Spin Logic along with its computer simulation. It is shown that the low cost data embedding algorithm can hide watermark into original cover image coming from a sensor much quicker than software implementation and the embedded image is easily conveyed to PC by using proper interface. The quality of the transmitted image is also analogous to that of the implemented by software algorithm.

Pattern matching and regular expression matching are all the critical components for content inspection based applications. But current regular expression matching algorithms or architecture cannot provide a perfect solution for whole matching problem. In some real network security applications, exact strings are the biggest part of rule set, and the second part is simple regular expressions (dot-star and AND-logic), and the other complex regular expressions only occupy a very small part. So, we propose a new hardware-based multiple simple regular expression matching architecture, called MSRM, for Dot-Star and AND-logic regular expressions. Firstly, software compiler splits simple regular expressions into exact strings and relations. Multi-string-matching module judges whether strings match and outputs the matched ID. Based on these matched information and pre-generated RAM data, MSRM can judge whether dot-star and AND-logic regular expressions are satisfied easily and quickly. Experiments with random test data and ClamAV rule set show that MSRM can achieve a high throughput of 2.1 and 2.8 Gbps using Virtex2 and Virtex4 devices respectively which is much higher than software algorithms.

Recently, the significantly increased IPv6 address length has posed a greater challenge on wire-speed router for IP lookup. As a result, even the most efficient IPv4 lookup scheme can not meet the demand in IPv6. In this paper, we make a thorough observation on the characteristic of IPv4/IPv6 routing table and propose a novel division technique for routing table, with which the traditional LPM (longest prefix matching) problem can be changed to an exact matching one for majority prefixes. Based on this technique, we propose a DBH (dynamic binary hash) scheme for dynamic IPv6 routing lookup, which achieves O(log W) (W stands for the address length) lookup performance. Key feature of the new scheme is its ability to have a performance guarantee of 7 hash probes in the worst cast of IPv6 routing lookup, meanwhile it can support incremental update. This makes it more attractive in reality. The performance evaluation has shown that the newly proposed scheme can achieve an average lookup memory access number of 2.7 for current IPv6 lookup. It is below 35% of best existing dynamic algorithm. Besides, the memory cost by the data structure itself is extremely small and the average update memory access number is very few.

We describe the Sail Labs Media Mining System which is capable of processing vast amounts of data typically gathered from open sources in unstructured form. The data are processed by a set of components and the output is produced in MPEG7 format. The origin and kind of input may be as diverse as a set of satellite receivers monitoring TV stations or textual input from web-pages or RSS-feeds. A sequence of processing steps analyzing the audio, video and textual content of the input is carried out. The resulting output is made available for search and retrieval, analysis and visualization on a next generation Media Mining Server. access to the system is web-based; the system can serve as a search platform across open, closed or secured networks. Data may also be extracted and exported and thus be made available in airgap networks. The Media Mining System can be used as a tool for situational awareness, information sharing and risk assessment.
